Pre-season friendly
Croydon FC 1
Epsom and Ewell FC 2
This was the first home friendly for Croydon, and both sides were unbeaten in their pre-season friendlies going into the game.
The first goal of the season was Epsom's in the fifth minute, but it was disallowed as the referee had thought the ball was going out for a goal kick rather than in the back of the net.
Croydon opened the scoring on the half-hour mark when Dan Jupe reacted quickest to convert a rebound from Badar Mohammed's shot.
Then, following a foul, Justin Hemmings' powerful free kick was saved by the goalkeeper and was the best chance Croydon had of doubling their lead.
Nine minutes into the second half, the Epsom number 11 went past the Croydon defence to equalise.
Croydon managed to get a bit more possession by now and even tried to get forward, but a chance to score was stopped by an Epsom defender.
Midway through the half, Epsom had a great chance to go in front but missed the target, but moments later the visitors made no mistake with the winner.
The next Croydon FC game is at Croydon Sports Arena on Saturday against Clapton FC, kicking off at 3pm, followed by a race night starting at 6.30pm.
The new season starts next weekend against Deal Town before they play Erith Town on Tuesday, August 12.
Croydon's pre-season campaign so far: Banstead Athletic – Won 3-2, Wembley FC – Drew 2-2, Farleigh Rovers – Won 3-1, Raynes Park Vale – Won 1-0.
