A DESIGN firm previously responsible for the regeneration of Leicester town centre has been tasked with making improvements to the area.

Croydon Council has secured £1.5m in funding from Transport for London to improve streets and spaces around Portland Road, Station Road and High Street.

Award-winning design firm Burns + Nice have been chosen as the project designers, with construction work due to start next year. Before then, there will be a process of consultation, with residents and businesses given the chance to have their say on how they would like the area to look.

The next public consultation event will take place at Stanley Halls on Monday, March 9, between 7 and 8.30pm.

Council leader Tony Newman said: "Croydon's regeneration story isn't just about the town centre but the whole borough, and South Norwood is one of our major district centres.

"This funding will help to transform the area, bringing about much-needed improvements."

Burns + Nice have previously worked on schemes for Leicester city centre, London's Leicester Square, and St Martin's Courtyard, in Westminster.
