RAIN has turned to snow in Surrey and over the Croyson hills during the morning rush hour and in places has started to settle.
Moderate snow is falling at 7.30am and is sticking to grass, car windscreens and some roof tops despite them being wet after the rain before dawn.
The temperature is dropping and at Reigate is 1.1C, down from 2.2C before dawn.
The snow is settling in some gardens in the Croydon hills, on the North Downs near Dorking, and at Hindhead where, at 7.30am, it was "well snowing".
At 7.40am, radio reports suggested no problems at that time, on the roads caused by the weather but traffic on the A3 near the approach to the Hog's Back was very heavy.
Met Office said the wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow could give a slight accumulation on the hills.
It will become very cold tonight as the south east draws in very cold air from Northern Germany.
There could be some wintry showers this afternoon but tomorrow will be dried but with a bone-chilling wind.
Cloudy and a little less cold on Saturday and Sunday.
