THE Met Office reported this week that England had just had its driest September for more than 100 years. Surrey's weather expert Ian Currie has pointed out, however, that it was not so record-breaking in our area. "It is only the driest September since 1997 for many in East Surrey and 1959 was very much drier. For instance, there was 13mm of rain this month and just 4mm in 1959. "Temperature-wise, it is only the warmest since 2011." Mr Currie, of Rickman Hill, Coulsdon, who is co-author of The Surrey Weather Book, added: "It has been a dry and warm September and half the days have been calm, hence the saying 'September blow soft 'til the fruit's in the loft'." It has, in fact, not been as warm as some Septembers in the past. "For instance my mean temperature in September of 15.9C compares with 17.8C in 2006."
