THE driver of a vehicle towing a caravan has fled a crash scene in Purley this morning - with police subsequently finding potentially contraband fuel in the caravan.
Police were called to reports of a collision on Godstone Road between a 4x4 towing a caravan and another vehicle at approximately 7.20am this morning.
When they arrived, the driver of the 4x4 had left the scene on foot.
While no one was injured, police surrounded the abandoned vehicle and the caravan and carried out searches, finding barrels of red diesel in the towed caravan.
The accident happened on Godstone Road between Sunnydene Road and Lower Road.
It is illegal to use red diesel in ordinary road vehicles due to its significantly reduced tax levy compared to un-dyed diesel fuel.
Police also searched local roads for the driver of the abandoned car.
