Surrey Street Market: 'It's more a way of life than a job'

TWO weeks ago we reported on plans to revive the fortunes of Surrey Street Market, one of Croydon's greatest landmarks. In the first of a three-part series, Callum Paton looks back at the history of one of the capital's oldest markets. SURREY Street Market, one of the best-known features of central Croydon, has a rich history going back to the early 13th century.

Families trading on the market at present can trace their personal family history on the market back over hundreds of years.

Banners on the street today inform shoppers that the market was established in 1276, referring to the Royal Charter obtained for a weekly market in Croydon's earliest records.

In all likelihood there was a market there even earlier, though the earliest recorded trading was from a corn and cattle market held on Thursdays in 1314.

While traders on Surrey Street will admit to having been there a long time, living memory and family stories don't go back quite as far as 1314.

Today, many stallholders can still trace their roots back to four families that made their living running fruit and veg and flower stalls on the market in the 19th century: the Curds, the Campbells, the Thoroughgoods and the Holdens.

Tim Holden, who runs a fruit and veg stall with his family and has extended family across the market, said his great-granddad, Alfred Holden, got his first licence on Surrey Street in 1908.

"They were here longer than that but I think that's when they got the first licence," he said.

Mr Holden added: "When I started working 35 years ago I worked with my father and my grandfather. Now I work with my father and my son. It's more a way of life than a job."

In 1843, the market moved from adjacent Middle Street to what was then Butchers Row.

Though the butchers' shops along the street were cleaned out long ago, the hooks used to hang up carcasses can still be seen on buildings in Surrey Street.

Russell Smith, who runs a flower stall at the end furthest from the High Street and has been working on the market since he was five, explained that his great-grandfather, Aaron Campbell, moved his stall to Surrey Street from Thrift Street in 1902.

The family grew their own flowers and vegetables and used to sell as many as ten boxes of carnations a day.

He remembers stories of his great-grandmother who had a stall next to Jack Cohen, who went on to found Tesco.

"She lent him six shillings and my grandmother says she never saw a penny of that back.

"It's probably worth a lot of money now," he said.

Read next week's nostalgia for a look at the more recent history of Surrey Street Market.

EXCLUSIVE: Palace co-chairman hopeful on George Boyd signing

$

CRYSTAL Palace co-chairman Stephen Browett says that George Boyd is a player the Eagles are keen to conclude a deal for and that Peterborough United have lowered their asking price for the player.
And he revealed that the club are looking at signings going forward and is confident of landing at least two out of a possible four targets.
"We're looking at bringing in a couple of players in attacking positions – wingers, strikers, or the combination of the two," Browett exclusively told Advertiser Sport.
"It's chief executive Phil Alexander who does all the hard work with transfers, in consultation with Steve (Parish) and I on whether we should or shouldn't sign a player.
"George Boyd is a player of interest. Peterborough offered him to us at a price we thought was too high, so we negotiated a lower price.
"As of Tuesday night, we hadn't spoken to the player yet, so I think it was a bit premature for their chairman there to tweet about it – it's not the way we like to operate until any transfer is completed.
"There were no tweets, press releases or comments from the directors at Palace on Wilfried Zaha until the deal to Manchester United was done, and it will be the same for George Boyd or any other player.
"We're not going to comment on it until it happens. But it is true that they have lowered the asking price.
"We haven't agreed to pay it, but that fee is now interesting and it doesn't mean it's going to happen."
And Browett admits he's a fan of the skilful attacking player, who is a boyhood Palace fan.
"I hope it happens, but for all we know, the player might want £25,000 a-week and a 20-year contract!," he said.
"He's a very good player and every time we play Peterborough he seems to be their best player.
"It's nice that he's a Palace fan but it's not that important. It's about getting the best player possible.
"Phil Alexander was looking to hold talks this morning, but I don't know if he's managed to get hold of the player and agent yet.
"I know Phil was going up to Huddersfield, so maybe he's met them on the M1 or something."
Asked where he could be utilised in Palace's starting line-up, Browett believes the Boyd could play in a number of positions, including just behind lone striker Glenn Murray.
"If Yannick Bolasie or Wilfried were to get injured or suspended, we haven't got a lot of choice in terms of winger back-up," he said.
"But Boyd can also play in the hole behind the striker, which is where Owen Garvan and Andre Moritz have been playing.
"With Garvan injured, you can argue that Moritz or Jonathan Williams can only play in that role, so it's good to have cover but it's certainly not a done deal.
"In the past, I know that when people have tried to buy George Boyd, they've been quoted £1m plus more fees."

EXCLUSIVE: Palace co-chairman hopeful on George Boyd signing

Palace co-chairman: Ebanks-Blake and Adomah are top Championship talents

$

0

CRYSTAL Palace co-chairman Stephen Browett has admitted that the likes of Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Albert Adomah would be the types of talent the Eagles would be interested in.
Both players have been heavily linked with moves to Selhurst Park towards the end of the current transfer window and Browett says the club are working hard on a few deals ahead of tomorrow night's 11pm deadline.
"Without naming names, they are two of the best players in the Championship and the kind of players we are looking for at that quality level," he exclusively told Advertiser Sport.
"But I can't comment directly on players at other clubs.
"We've got irons in a few fires at the moment and there are three or four players we're looking at.
"We're talking to clubs, but there's nothing we can say yet. I would hope we could get in two players, whether it's one player now and then another one when the loan window opens, or two straight transfers.
And Browett has hinted that Palace may look to use the loan market to attract players from the Premier League after the window closes.
"A lot of the Premier League clubs have got players they might not want to sell, but the once the window is finished they'll see who they've got who isn't going to realistically play for them," he said.
"They can't loan them out to other Premier League clubs are the window closes, so they have to loan them to Championship clubs."
Meanwhile, CPFC2010 have announced on the BBS Forum website not to expect any players departing Selhurst Park despite reports linking one or two to the Premier League.
They posted: "We don't talk about individual players but as we have said many times before, no first team players are leaving. We are trying to strengthen not weaken the squad."

Transfer window updates: January 30 morning

Clubs have less than 48 hours to secure the signatures of their model players, as the transfer window will slam shut tomorrow at 11pm. We'll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer news and gossip as the deadline approaches. UPDATE 2.05PM: Chesterfield striker Scott Boden has joined non-league Alfreton Town on loan. The 23-year-old, who joined Chesterfield in the summer of 2008, will remain with the Blue Square Bet Premier side until April 20. Crystal Palace are pondering a move for Dundee United forward Johnny Russell, Sky Sports reports. The club has seen a bid for Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake rejected. Wolves manager Dean Saunders is reluctant to let his 11-goal leading scorer leave. Palace have, however, agreed a deal with Peterborough for the transfer of midfielder George Boyd. Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony revealed the news on his official Twitter account: Palace co-chairman Stephen Browett also revealed the club are looking at signings going forward and he is confident of landing at least two out of a possible four targets. Stoke City boss Tony Pulis is arranging a surprise swap deal with Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp involving Peter Crouch and Jamie Mackie. Pulis would let Crouch go if he could sign Mackie, it is understood. Pulis last night admitted QPR boss Harry Redknapp had asked him about the possibility of taking the striker to Loftus Road. Pulis is also hoping to add American international Brek Shea and Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson to his line-up before tomorrow's 11pm transfer deadline. The Shea deal, which collapsed earlier this month, appears to have been resurrected in time to complete his transfer before tomorrow's deadline providing he passes a medical and the paperwork is completed in time. And Port Vale yesterday said they will delay contract talks with more than half-a-dozen players until they know what division they will be playing in next season. Swansea City boss Michael Laudrup last night admitted he has no idea how deadline day will unfold for the club. The manager insisted he does not know what the future holds for Danny Graham amid strong interest from the Black Cats and a number of other clubs. Meanwhile City right-back Curtis Obeng has signed a one-month loan deal with York City. Scunthorpe United have confirmed there has been no Sheffield United bid for Mark Duffy. The Blades made an enquiry about his availability earlier in the season, but Scunthorpe United have confirmed to the Scunthorpe Telegraph this morning there has been no offer. Hull City remain in hot pursuit of Egyptian international striker Gedo. It is understood talks over a loan deal for the 26-year-old have advanced over the past week, as attempts to bring in QPR hit-man DJ Campbell have hit problems. Leicester striker Jeff Schlupp has had his spell with Manchester United extended. The 20-year-old has spent the past two weeks with United at their Carrington training ground, and Pearson said he was happy for Schlupp to continue his stay there. Bristol City fans are questioning whether the club can sell Albert Adomah and at the same time retain its Championship status. Crystal Palace have already had two bids rejected and are considering a third and final offer, while Bolton are weighing up whether to make a move for the 25-year-old winger. Meanwhile Crewe assistant boss Neil Baker is hoping midfielder Luke Murphy will still be an Alex player after tomorrow's transfer deadline. The club aren't planning to bring in any players, and both Baker and manager Steve Davis will be delighted if there are no bids for 23-year-old Murphy. Nottingham Forest will play hardball with Birmingham City over Chris Burke, after having an improved £500,000 bid for the winger rejected. The Reds hierarchy were shocked to see what they regard as a fair offer rejected. The Scotsman is out of contract in the summer. Meanwhile Nottingham Forest's January transfer target George Boyd has agreed a deal with Crystal Palace. Colchester goalkeeper Carl Pentney has had his contract cancelled by mutual consent. Manager Joe Dunne told the club's official website: "Carl has been very patient in his time with us but it is time he was playing first team football. "As with a few others, I cannot offer him that here so we feel that releasing him from his contract is the fairest thing to do and we wish him well for the future." Meanwhile Brentwood Town forward Alex Read continues his trial with Dagenham & Redbridge. At least one more new face is expected at Cheltenham Town before Thursday's deadline. Luke Rooney of Swindon Town is on the club's radar, and a central defender will definitely come in tomorrow morning on loan, it is understood. Mark Yates is also chasing another striker. Last night the club secured Paul Benson of Swindon Town on loan until the end of the season. The 33-year-old striker initially turned down a move to the Abbey Business Stadium, but boss Mark Yates' persistence has paid off. On Friday, Town signed Manchester United defender Luke McCullough. Peterborough United left-back Scott Griffiths has had his contract at cancelled by mutual consent. The 27-year-old, who had a loan spell this season at Plymouth Argyle, is now a free agent. Manchester City are not interested in any deal for David Villa despite speculation linking them with the Barcelona striker, Sky Sports understands. It was earlier reported City had made an enquiry about the £15m-rated forward. But Arsenal's Wenger is set to make one final attempt to sign Villa. Meanwhile Aston Villa right-back Alan Hutton has completed his loan move to Spanish side Real Mallorca. QPR have completed the signing of Yun Suk-young from Chunnam Dragons, and are understood to have made a bid to Anzhi Makhachkala for defender Chris Samba. The club is in talks with Stoke City about the possible transfer of Peter Crouch.

The Tigers are understood to be closing in on six-month loans deals for the Al Ahly pair. Crewe assistant boss Neil Baker hopes midfielder Luke Murphy will still be at the club after tommorrow's transfer deadline. Swansea City right-back Curtis Obeng has joined York City on a one-month loan deal. Obeng joined City in January last year, and in October went out on loan to League Two side Fleetwood Town. Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Dean Saunders has warned clubs to make their offers early on transfer deadline day if they want to do business, Sky Sports reports. Saunders does not want his preparation for the game at Leicester disrupted by late bids for his players, and he wants to ensure he has time to sign replacements if anyone is to leave his squad. Queens Park Rangers are set to sign Christopher Samba, who is heading to England to complete a deal. Anzhi Makhachkala boss Guus Hiddink says Samba, a former Blackburn defender, has already set off.

Huddersfield Town 1-0 Palace: Eagles suffer defeat thanks to former loan striker

CRYSTAL Palace missed the chance to go second in the Championship tonight after a 1-0 defeat at Huddersfield Town.

Former Eagles loan striker James Vaughan proved to be the matchwinner just before the midway point of the second half as Palace were left frustrated on a cold night in West Yorkshire.

On a bumpy pitch at the John Smith Stadium, Palace had the first opportunity of the match when Andre Moritz delivered a free-kick to the back post and Huddersfield defender Calum Woods sent a firm header back to goalkeeper Alex Smithies by some surprise.

Adam Clayton tried his luck with a tame effort from range at the other end shortly after but Julian Speroni held with ease, before Palace loan signing Jazz Richards bombed down the right for and sent into a teasing cross but there wasn't anyone at the back post for the Eagles.

Oliver Norwood picked up the first booking of the night for a late challenge on Yannick Bolasie after 25 minutes, but from the resulting free-kick sent in by Moritz, Damien Delaney couldn't quite reach the ball towards the far post.

Palace felt as if they should have had a free-kick given to them when Moritz looked to have been on the end of a hard challenge, but the referee played on and the ball fell to former Eagle Neil Danns in the box before forcing a good stop from Speroni.

And just after the half-hour mark, Danns sent a downwards volley towards goal but Speroni held firmly following another Huddersfield attack.

Moritz then tested Smithies with a free-kick which took a slight deflection on its way through fron 25-yards out as Palace began to get a grip on the game again.

And Moritz was at the heart of their next move going forward when he spread the play out to Jonathan Parr after a one-two with Jedinak through the middle, but following a cross from the left, Glenn Murray was flagged offside.

However, Moritz was replaced on the stroke of half-time by Jonathan Williams after suffering an injury to his leg.

And Williams could have opened the scoring shortly into the second period when he found himself taking on the last defender, but he was eventually pushed out wide.

James Vaughan then went into the referee's book for catching Jedinak late in the middle of the park, while Danns tested Speroni again with a shot from the left side of the box.

Zaha looked to have been clipped inside the box after 59 minutes when he won the ball back off Jack Hunt down the left flank, while the home fans were calling for handball from Damien Delaney as he nudged the ball back to Speroni from a long ball forward.

Jonathan Parr then sent in two dangerous deliveries from the left byline but unfortunately the hosts managed to clear their lines, including a great block to deny Butterfield inside the box.

However, the hosts took the lead on 65 minutes when a through-ball into the feet of James Vaughan inside the box was cooly slotted home under Speroni by the striker.

Holloway decided he had no choice but to go for the equaliser after 75 minutes by sending on Aaron Wilbraham and Jermaine Easter for both full-backs in Richards and Parr, with Jedinak slipping into defence with Ramage and Delaney.

Former Palace academy product Sean Scannell came on for the hosts and tested Speroni minutes later, while Vaughan was replaced by Jermaine Beckford with four minutes remaining.

Zaha continued to be a frustrated figure down the left as the home defence kept a close eye on him, while the referee added a further four minutes for Holloway's side to come up with an equaliser.

But it wasn't to be as the hosts hit the crossbar late on with a chipped shot before the whistle was blown for full-time.

Palace: Speroni, Richards (Wilbraham 75), Parr (Easter 75), Ramage, Delaney, Butterfield, Jedinak (c), Moritz (Williams 45), Zaha, Bolasie, Murray.

Subs Not Used: Price, Moxey, Marrow, O'Keefe.

Attendance: 13,471 (538 Palace fans)

School places pressure on Croydon primary schools will spread to secondaries

PLANS to create more than 600 extra reception places for by September have been outlined by the council but, in this special report, Gareth Davies discovers how pressure on Croydon's primaries will soon spread to its secondary schools. THE chronic shortage of places at the borough's schools is going to last for at least another decade, new projections have shown.

A baby boom, inward migration and a stagnant housing market means extra spaces will have to be found until at least 2022/23.

On Monday, the council revealed which schools would be next to take additional classes or be permanently expanded to create 660 extra primary places for this September.

Estimates based on Croydon's population growth over the last two years show space may have to be found for up to 53 reception classes – or 1,590 children – by 2016/17.

Research now shows the extent to which this intense demand for primary places will put our secondary schools under pressure in the future – with a potential 96 forms of entry for 2,880 pupils needed in a decade's time.

Tim Pollard, cabinet member for children, young people and learners, believes the projections will give the council the edge when it comes to meeting this demand.

He said: "There are quite a lot of unknowns but what we're doing is putting in place additional capacity based on hard evidence, a flexible system based on permanent expansions for what we absolutely know will happen and bulge classes for anything on top of that."

Croydon Council recruited a specialist external research company to revise its own estimates of the demand for school places.

The new predictions are based on the Office for National Statistics' birth data, school pupil counts and transfer rates, London Assembly population projections and housing data.

Three scenarios were developed; the first based on growth continuing in line with birth rates, the second on the average level experienced over the past five years and the third at the higher rate experienced in 2011/12 and 2012/13.

Current levels of demand make the first scenario "very unlikely".

Projections based on the final two outcomes show the council will need to find between 8 and 18 additional forms of entry for 2013 – 240 or 540 places above the 5,100 offered in 2012.

Cllr Pollard believes the reality will be closer to the second scenario of growth, continuing at the average rate experienced in the past five years.

But the council must also plan for the worst-case scenario. At Monday's cabinet meeting it approved the creation of 22 new forms of entry in September 2013, based on early analysis of primary applications received before the deadline earlier this month.

Eight of these will be created by permanently expanding seven schools, and 14 others through bulge classes, mainly at Roman Catholic infant schools and nurseries.

This is on top of the 240 additional permanent primary school places, including a new academy, 540 bulge places and Special Educational Needs bases at nine schools made in 2012/13.

Plans are already under way to create the extra secondary capacity produced by the boom at reception level. Two new schools are in the pipeline, with the council actively inviting submissions from free schools and academies.

If upper growth estimates prove correct then the first extra class will be needed at secondary level from 2014/15.

Two years later, nine extra forms of entry will be required, with demand peaking at 19 additional classes (570 pupils) in both 2019/20 and 2020/21.

Kathy Bee, Labour's education spokesman, said funding rather than finding the extra places is her biggest concern.

This year's expansion plans will cost £19.85m assuming the council can secure funding for two free schools.

She said: "I've become slightly numb to the numbers because they've been so big for so long, but I'm worried by these projections because of the length of time the problem will go on for.

"If you look at the worst-case scenario, the amount of space we will need is really worrying.

"To some extent the pressure on our secondary schools is manageable. It's easier to plan for because we know what to expect as pupils come through the system.

"The concern is the cost. Given the amount being spent on creating extra school places, the council won't have capital available for anything else."

Cllr Pollard is confident that the new projections will mean Croydon gets a fairer share when next year's funding is announced by the Department for Education at the end of month as expected.

"When these issues started it wasn't initially clear where the pressure was going to be," he said.

"But I think it's fair to say the Government is now under no illusion that the pressure is highest in London.

"Croydon's case has been made very strongly within that, so I hope we will see a very significant contribution."

Expansion plans for 2013/14 Permanent expansions:
  • Downsview Primary and Nursery School, Upper Norwood (one form of entry);
  • Norbury Manor Primary School, Norbury (one form of entry);
  • Howard Primary School, South Croydon (one form of entry);
  • Parish Church Nursery and Infant School, Croydon (one form of entry);
  • Forestdale Primary, Forestdale (one form of entry);
  • Whitehorse Manor, on its Brigstock Road annex in Thornton Heath (one form of entry); and
  • Oasis Academy Shirley Park on Stroud Green Lodge (two forms of entry)
Bulge classes:
  • St James the Great RC Academy, Thornton Heath (one form of entry);
  • Ark Oval Primary Academy, east Croydon (one form of entry);
  • St Chads RC Primary School, Selhurst (one form of entry);
  • Margaret Roper RC Primary School, Purley (one form of entry);
  • St Mary's RC Infant and Nursery School, West Croydon (one form of entry);
  • St Joseph's RC Infant and Nursery School, Upper Norwood (one form of entry);
  • Robert Fitzroy Academy, Addiscombe (two forms of entry); and
  • Wolsey Infant and Nursery School, New Addington
* Further discussion under way to create five other bulge classes

A 56-YEAR-OLD'S mobility scooter was stolen from outside his house in the middle of the night and left wrecked nearby.

Steven Hancock woke last Thursday morning to find the scooter he has relied on since breaking his foot two years ago was gone.

The silver four-wheeler was found later that day and returned to him, but it was damaged beyond repair.

Mr Hancock, of Milne Park West, said: "I felt like crying my eyes out when I saw it. It is irreparable. There is nothing I can do about it.

"That night I was awake all night as I could not sleep, but I did not hear anything and the dog did not hear anything.

"I am not really getting around without it – it helped me go shopping and do things like that."

The scooter had its wiring ripped out, plastic casing damaged and handle bars snapped off.

Mr Hancock added: "I know I was a little sod when I was a kid but I did not do things like that."

The scooter had been parked as usual in the alleyway between Mr Hancock's and his neighbour's house.

Mr Hancock's partner, Jan Allum, said: "I went out to the shop on Thursday morning to get the paper and saw the bins were moved.

"I thought 'that is unusual' and then 'Oh my God! The bike has gone'."

She added: "What really concerns me is that could have been an 80-year-old lady who really relies on it.

"There don't seem to be any police up here when you want them."

The wrecked scooter was found in Milne Park by a man taking his children to school, who alerted the Pathfinders community group.

It was traced back to Mr Hancock after John Behan at the Steel Gym alerted his Facebook followers to the theft.

The scooter was given to Mr Hancock by his mother to help after his foot injury, for which he is still being treated in hospital.

He added: "The annoying part of it is it belonged to my mother – it is like they are attacking my mother."

Police are investigating.

Croydon Conservative members leaving party over gay marriage plans

THE Conservative Party's stance on gay marriage – backed publicly by local Tory MPs – has sparked an exodus among local party members.

Local Tory politicians have told the Advertiser a "significant number" of grassroots activists are not renewing memberships and resigning in defiance as part of a backlash over the issue, with more vetoes expected.

Croydon South MP Richard Ottaway, who last week voiced his support for marriage rights to be extended to same sex couples, confirmed that a number of resignations have been received.

Purley councillor Graham Bass, meanwhile, described the exodus as "significant".

And Greater London Assembly member for Croydon Steve O'Connell – the only prominent Tory borough politician left opposing the move – is expecting further departures.

Mr Bass, who collects party fees in Purley for Croydon Conservatives, said growing numbers are not renewing memberships and branded the gay marriage plans an "attack on democracy".

He said: "A significant number of people are resigning on account of it and a significant number are gritting their teeth.

"It is very prominent. You can't help noticing it among the membership. I would expect to see more people leaving.

"Personally, I'm not in favour of changing the meaning of marriage and what it has stood for over the centuries.

"The mention of a man and wife is different to claiming that that is an appropriate word for a homosexual couple, which it isn't.

"There is no need to change it and I think it would be damaging.

"It is an attack on democracy, not just for religious beliefs, but because homosexuals are in the minority and I don't think the democratic majority agree."

Mr Ottaway and Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell have both lent their support to gay marriage, which is expected to be made legal by the Government by 2015.

Earlier this month, Mr Ottaway declared marriage should "evolve as society evolves."

News of wavering Conservative support comes as activists from the Coalition for Marriage (C4M) paraded the streets of Croydon South – one of the coalition's "target" seats – calling for people to lobby their MP over the issue.

C4M campaigner Colin Hart said: "Although Richard Ottaway says he agrees with redefining marriage, many of his constituents disagree with him.

"These plans are unpopular and divisive. The voters were ignored by the politicians."

Mr O'Connell, who feels "uncomfortable" about the legalisation, said: "There are certainly people leaving the party because this is an issue which conflicts. I think it is very possible more people might leave over it.

"Some have left, some are searching their conscience, some are balancing it up and some will find it is incompatible.

"My position is clear. A: there are far more important things to do than to push this through, and B: I'm not comfortable myself because this tramples over the deeply-help convictions of a number of people.

"Many of the gay people I have spoken to are happy with civil partnerships."

Despite confirming that there had been resignations, Mr Ottaway insisted there was "good evidence we are attracting younger members".

Save Our Shops: How are south Croydon independent businesses coping one year on?

$

ONE year after the Advertiser launched its Support Our Shops campaign, Rachel Millard speaks to 50 small business owners to find out how they are coping... IT IS fair to say there is a unique offer at Pindi Food and Wine in Brighton Road, Coulsdon.

Owner Asif Mehmood offers free soft drinks and snacks to all paramedics, as a small gesture of thanks.

He said: "One day I got ill and they came to my home and helped me.

"Since that day I said whenever I open a shop, paramedics will get soft drinks and sweets for free.

"I have another shop in Thornton Heath and when I am not here those are my instructions to my staff.

"You won't find that anywhere else."

Such an approach to customer service is the hallmark of our high street shops, and something Mr Mehmood is clearly proud to do.

Yet with most such shops reporting a drop in business for yet another year, who knows for how long such traditions may continue.

Our survey this month of 50 independent high street businesses in south Croydon revealed more than half had seen business fall over the past 12 months.

About 40 per cent said business had stayed the same, with just five shops admitting to an increase, a result broadly in line with our similar survey one year ago.

Like last year, parking and business rates were cited as the biggest stumbling blocks traders faced in trying to beat the bad economy.

But more and more traders are also hoping the council will try to make more use of planning powers to help them.

Kay Patel, owner of Kays News in South End, said she has had to take out an overdraft this year for the first time, after a Tesco Express opened round the corner.

She said: "They could restrict the chain stores so there was not more than one within a certain area, to let other people survive."

Tahsim Dagdelem, manager of Deep Sea Fish Bar in Kenley, echoed the call for the council to ensure of a mix of nearby shops in his parade.

He said: "There are few shops and so many restaurants and takeaways – Croydon Council keeps giving permission for these types of businesses."

Most traders could only offer a bashful "hopefully" when asked would they still be here in five years' time.

But they were more forthright on why everyone would lose were they not.

Louise Arpino, owner of the Coulsdon Pet Centre in Brighton Road, said: "They would never get the service like they do at local shops – we have customers who ring up and without saying their name they say, 'Can I have my usual order?'

"We know where their key is to let ourselves in their door and go to their kitchen [to feed their pets ]. They are never going to get that anywhere else."

Sonny Patel, manager of Good News newsagent in Purley, said: "If you walk into Tesco they will not give you credit like I do to my regular customers."

The ray of sunshine in the high street – and possible sign of times to come – seems to be in niche businesses.

Apparently bucking the downward trend is electric bike store Cycling Made Easy in Coulsdon.

Its owner, Ray Wookey, said it had sold "900 per cent" more over Christmas than this time last year, though declined to give numbers.

He added he hopes to expand into lager premises in the next year.

Mr Wookey said: "We have used the internet a lot and we have a very big and comprehensive website.

"We have formed personal relationships and we try to have a very high level of customer care."

KENLEY: Westbourne Florists owner Marilyn Poulton says the number one issue threatening the parade is poor parking enforcement. Lack of wardens means cars are often parked in the few Transport for London bays all day, blocking potential customers. She said: "We just want them to do what they put into action: just do their job." Nearby store Items has an advantage over many high street shops, as one of the few sugar craft shops serving a wide area. "Sugar craft is one of the up and coming things with all the baking shows," said But she owner Pamela Parrott said business has been about the same this year as last, agreeing: "Parking is the main thing. We need better parking, and more parking." Selsdon FORMER Woolworth's manager Asad Khan opened successor store Smallworths in the high street in August 2010. He has had to adapt his new business over the past year to meet 'challenging' conditions, including crippling roadworks and high business rates. The store has started a line in computer and mobile phone repairs, which Mr Khan says has proved to be a success. "We have had one or two businesses come to us now because we are charging such a good rate, so we do a couple of commercial businesses now," he added. "I think everyone can do more to support local businesses because at the end of the day that's how to avoid empty shops. "We opened a store here because we believed it is a good place to open a business, because it is serving the community. "We know it is not going to be easy but we believe we can definitely create a business here." Coulsdon TRADERS here are awaiting planned developments which could bring hundreds more regular shoppers to town. More than 650 homes are due to be built on Cane Hill, more than 80 flats in the high street, and possibly one or even two new town centre supermarkets. Nava Rajah's Best Save Food and Wine in Brighton Road will have made it ten years in the town in September. Mr Rajah said: "It is not like a fully developed town yet – they should have done the Coulsdon bypass after development. "There is not enough to bring people in for the day – we need a proper clothes shop or a fast-food restaurant like a McDonald's, for example." Vijay Upadhyaya, owner of Marsh's Stationers in Brighton Road, echoed the criticism of the bypass. He said: "They said it would lessen traffic in the town centre; instead it has just taken people out." Purley ALAN Manley has kept his business afloat with some nifty adaptation. The manager of Purley Sports in Brighton Road said: "We have started doing T-shirt and other printing and engraving. "That side of the business has really taken off. We started because we got inundated with people asking for it. "Otherwise Purley high street is pretty dead and too many shops are closing down." Phil Herodotou has taken a bold step into that environment. He opened Burgers at Blacks early last year, gaining national media coverage for a burger eating challenge. He said: "Things have pretty much grown through word of mouth. "People should definitely support their shops as it creates a bit of community." Sanderstead FAMILY Choice is one of two food and wine retailers at the small parade in Sanderstead Road. Manager Nair said: "People should definitely support their local shops. "For example now during the snow they have no choice, so they should definitely consider us during other times as well." The shopkeeper says he has seen a dip in business over the past year, partly due to Tesco Express opening in South Croydon. He said: "The government has got to control the opening of these express shops. They must give the others a chance to survive." Next door, Mega Kitchens does not depend on passing trade nor compete with Tesco. But even there, owner Hugo Rincon says business has been a struggle over the past three years due to 'the economic situation'. South Croydon GEOFFREY Butler Cycles is one of a minority of shops not to report a drop in business over the past year. Manager Stephen Delaney said: "We are a physical kind of product so it is not just ordering a CD; it is more complicated than that and hands-on – there is also repair work. "Sometimes people do come in and ask us to put together bikes they bought in Tesco." But, he added, fewer restaurants in the area branded the 'restaurant quarter' may be for everyone's good. He said: "For a shop like us it would probably help if there were more retail outlets rather than restaurants – and it may help the restaurants as well."

UPDATE 10.30AM: Stoke have agreed to bring in USA international Brek Shea from MLS side FC Dallas, but he still needs to complete a work permit. UPDATE 10.25AM: Chris Samba has passed a medical at Queens Park Rangers . Nottingham Forest are close to snatching George Boyd from under the noses of Crystal Palace today. The Peterborough player will hold talks at the City Ground this morning, with a view to making a permanent return to the Reds. Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony turned to social networking site Twitter to reveal the club had accepted bids from multiple clubs for the midfielder: Meanwhile Kuwait goalkeeper Khaled Al-Rashidi has completed his move to Nottingham Forest. The club made the announcement last night on Twitter: And Notts County are still eyeing up a striker, it is understood. The Magpies have been in talks with targets in the last 24 hours, but boss Keith Curle is staying tight-lipped. Swansea City's Danny Graham is today set to make a move, but there are conflicting reports about which club he will head to. The Daily Mail claims he will complete a £5.5million transfer to Sunderland, but earlier this morning Sky Sports claimed a fee had been agreed with Middlesbrough. However, Sky Sports reported at 9.49am Graham's representatives have ruled out a move to Middlesbrough. The Swans are today set to grant Danny Graham's wish by selling the striker to Sunderland— provided they can secure a replacement on loan. Meanwhile Swans boss Michael Laudrup is understood to have turned his attention away from Stoke striker Kenwyne Jones after learning he wanted £50,000 a week to move to the Liberty Stadium side. Now, Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert is said to be mulling over a bid for Jones, the Mirror reports. Meanwhile Hungary international Jozsef Varga, who had been linked with the Swans, has signed with Greuther Furth on loan from Debrecni. Hull City are closing in on a deal for QPR striker DJ Campbell. City were last night in advanced talks to land their target, and it is understood the Tigers have agreed an undisclosed fee for the 31-year-old striker. Permission has been granted to discuss a move to the KC Stadium today. The club yesterday completed six-month loan deals for Egyptian pair Gedo and Ahmed Fathi, pending visas and work permits. Hull yesterday had a bid rejected for Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake. Stoke City and Reading are keen to sign Newcastle United right-back Danny Simpson, the Independent reports. They will have to fight off competition from Wigan Athletic, however. Stoke are also hoping to complete the £7m double signing of Jack Butland and Brek Shea today, and could also make a late move for a striker. The Potters are hoping to beat Chelsea to the signature of Birmingham City goalkeeper Butland with a bid of around £4m. But Sky Sports this morning reports Butland has arrived for training with Birmingham. Earlier this week the England Under-21 international turned down a move to Chelsea. Meanwhile Port Vale expect a relatively quiet end to the transfer window. Vale are still pursuing a couple of young players to add to their squad before today's 11pm deadline, but chairman Paul Wildes is happy with their business this month. Vale midfielder Ryan Burge is on the radar of Peterborough United , with the club considering a late bid, Sky Sports reports. Burge is out of contract at the end of the season. Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson is reportedly set for a loan move to Stoke, according to the Mirror. Potters boss Tony Pulis hopes to beat off competition from West Ham, Wigan and Fulham to bring Jenkinson to the Britannia Stadium until the end of the season. Meanwhile Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger last night admitted a deal for Barcelona striker David Villa was a no-go. When asked after the 2-2 draw at home to Liverpool if a deal for the striker was dead, Arsene Wenger said: "Yes." Bristol City coach Sean O'Driscoll will almost certainly delay making any new signings until the loan window reopens on Friday February 8. The January transfer window deadline is expected to pass without any new faces arriving at Ashton Gate. Derby County are eyeing two or three targets in the emergency loan window which opens next week. The Rams have no plans to strengthen the squad ahead of the January transfer window closing at 11pm tonight. Leicester City striker Jeff Schlupp could be snapped up by Charlton if nothing comes of his training stint with Manchester United, with Charlton boss Chris Powell admitting he would be interested in taking the player. Plymouth Argyle left-back Robbie Williams has left the club. He has had his contract terminated by mutual consent so he can seek regular first team football elsewhere. Exeter boss Paul Tisdale has not ruled out making an addition to his squad before the closure of the transfer window. The City chief has signed Myles Anderson and Mark Molesley during the window but says he would be open to making a move for a player. He said: "I am always looking and I have always got an open mind to who might be available. We may end up selling someone and then I'll have to respond to it. So I will be as prepared as I can." Leicester City last night confirmed Michael Keane's loan extension until the end of the season. The club took to Twitter to make the announcement: Swindon winger Matt Ritchie has signed with Bournemouth for an undisclosed fee. The 23-year-old has penned a three-and-a-half year deal with the club, which saw a bid for the player rejected in December 2011. QPR boss Harry Redknapp is hoping to bring in three Tottenham players on loan - Jermaine Jenas, Andros Townsend and remarkably David Bentley, The Sun reports. The deals would keep all three the club until the end of the season. Bentley was "frozen out at Tottenham by Redknapp to the extent that he eventually had to go to Russian club FC Rostov on loan to try to rescue his career", the Independent says. Meanwhile Anzhi Makhachkala defender Christopher Samba is set for a £100,000-a-week wage at QPR if a deal goes through. Sky Sports this morning reports a medical has been passed. Coventry City are considering a loan move for Manchester City winger Alex Henshall, 18, according to Sky Sports. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says he is not expecting to bring back Tom Ince to Anfield before the transfer window closes, but has not ruled out a move for the 21-year-old in the future. Ince has been linked with the Reds in recent weeks. Manchester City winger Adam Drury has seen his loan spell at Burton Albion extended for the rest of the season.

A MAN has been seriously injured after falling through a ceiling of a disused factory in Waddon.
Ambulance crews were called to Stewart House, in Waddon Marsh Way, at 8.40am this morning (Thursday) after reports of a man falling from a height.
London Air Ambulance attended by road and treated a 56-year-old man, believed to be a construction worker, for head and chest injuries.
He was then taken to the major trauma unit at St George's Hospital in Tooting.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been informed and police have cordoned off the factory until they arrive.
Stewart House had been home to plastics firm Stewart but has been empty since the company moved to Banbury, in Oxfordshire, at the end of last year.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a fall from height at an address in Waddon Marsh Way.
"We sent a duty officer to the scene, a single responder in a car, an ambulance crew and the London Air Ambulance by car.
"Our staff treated a 56-year-old male for head and chest injuries and he was taken as a priority to St George's."

Palace assistant boss: We're in talks with targets as we speak

$

CRYSTAL Palace assistant manager Keith Millen says the club are locked in talks trying to bring new players to Selhurst Park ahead of tonight's 11pm transfer window deadline.
But he conceded that the Eagles may have no choice but to use the loan window once it opens in seven days' time if they are unable to make any permanent signings.
"We're on the phone to a few people," he told Advertiser Sport at 5.30pm on Thursday.
"We've got our targets and we know we need to strengthen.
"We've lost out on some, so we move on. If we don't get anything today, we won't panic, we'll go with what we've got, and in seven days' time the loan window opens."
And Millen revealed that Peterborough United winger George Boyd looked set for a move to SE25, but a last-ditch offer from Nottingham Forest seems to have persuaded the Kent-born player otherwise.
"I think he wanted to join us because we're his boyhood team and he would have loved to come to us, then all of a sudden he's gone to Nottingham Forest, where he went before on loan, so it's a strange one," he added.
"Some people chase a bit more money and look at what clubs would suit them better."

Palace assistant boss slams Terriers striker for sending Mile Jedinak to hospital

$

CRYSTAL Palace assistant manager Keith Millen has slammed Huddersfield Town striker Alan Lee for swinging an arm at Eagles skipper Mile Jedinak last night.
The Australian midfielder was floored by the former Palace forward in stoppage time of last night's 1-0 defeat at the John Smith's Stadium.
"I saw the challenge at the time and thought it was an elbow," Millen told Advertiser Sport this evening.
"The video footage shows he (Lee) swung his arm. Sometimes you have to move your arms in football and you catch people, but to do that much damage to someone's face is more than just an arm being put out there.
"That was swung and it was a straight arm swing – he's caught him and it's not the first time he's done it.
"It's just not acceptable, and what annoyed us after the game was the reaction, that there was no remorse from Huddersfield and that's what upset us all.
"For Mile to swell up like that and not to get any remorse from their team angered us – it's not the sort of thing you want to see on a football field.
"It was poorly handled and you can't stand by people when they do that sort of thing. We're looking at doing something about it, but it's not the first time it's happened to us, and how have the officials not seen that?
"It was serious when he went down and the referee was around 10-15 yards away looking at it, so how has he not seen the arm? It's how he has swung his arm back, so it was not nice to see."
The Terriers were clearly delighted with their first win in 13 matches at the final whistle, but there proved to be further incident down in the dressing room area with emotions running high.
"It's only a little tunnel there, but it was more the reaction from them," Millen said.
"If he (Lee) had held his hands up and apologised, you can accept it a bit more.
"They celebrated like they had won the league by beating us. Yes, they were under pressure to win, but it wasn't the defeat that upset us, it was because of what happened and it wasn't acceptable.
"Ian (Holloway) was upset because he doesn't want to see any of players coming off the pitch with that sort of injury.
"You want someone to be punished for it."

Palace assistant: We may consider facial mask for Jedinak against Charlton

$

EAGLES assistant boss Keith Millen says Mile Jedinak was luckily given the all-clear by medical staff at a hospital in Huddersfield last night.
The skipper suffered a nasty eye injury after clashing with Huddersfield Town striker Alan Lee in stoppage time, but thankfully there has been no major damage.
"He's OK, although it was a bad one," Millen told Advertiser Sport.
"He went straight to hospital after the game and they looked at him and gave him the all-clear thankfully.
"Structurally there is no damage and the main thing is that his eye has been tested and nothing is wrong.
"The main problem now is the swelling because it's keeping his eye closed."
Jedinak may have an outside chance of facing Charlton Athletic on Saturday, but Millen says he'll be closely monitored by the Eagles.
"We'll have to see about Charlton on Saturday," he said.
"He is seeing someone on Friday, and if the swelling goes down we'll see what the medical team say."
And when questioned whether the club would consider using a facial mask similar to Paul Gascoigne's in 1993 while playing for England, Millen refused to rule out that possibility.
"Maybe yes, it's an option, so we'll leave it to the last minute," he added.
Meanwhile, Andre Moritz looks like he'll be doubt for the game against the Addicks after coming off just before half-time at the John Smith's Stadium.
"He's not looking good as he's done some damage to his ankle," Millen said.
"It was swollen after the game so we'll have to wait and see.
"He'll have some tests done on Friday to see if the swelling goes down, so it was disappointing to lose him as well."

CONFIRMED: Palace sign Kevin Phillips on loan from Blackpool

$

CRYSTAL Palace have secured the signature of Blackpool striker Kevin Phillips on loan until the rest of the season.

The veteran forward hit 17 goals last season but has been in and out of the Tangerines' first-team this campaign and will now link up with Ian Holloway again.

And as part of the deal between both clubs, the 39-year-old won't be able to face Blackpool when the two clubs meet later this season in April.

Meanwhile, it's believed that another striker, Stephen Dobbie, is currently undergoing a medical with Palace before tonight's 11pm transfer window deadline.

Both players will give the Eagles a timely boost ahead of Saturday's game with Charlton Athletic.

CONFIRMED: Stephen Dobbie signs for Palace on loan

$

CRYSTAL Palace have signed Stephen Dobbie from rivals Brighton & Hove Albion on an emergency loan tonight.

The Scottish striker, 30, now looks set to play for Ian Holloway again after playing under him at Blackpool. And he will be in line to partner Kevin Phillips and/or Glenn Murray up front.

He told www.cpfc.co.uk: "I know Ian really well and I'd heard there was a little bit of interest and when that became concrete there was no doubt in my mind to come and play for him. I've played for him twice at Blackpool and he gets players playing for him, and he's a great man and a motivator, and I just enjoyed working with him every day."

Meanwhile, George Boyd's move to Nottingham Forest is off after the player failed an eye test during his medical. The winger had held talks with Palace on Wednesday morning before going up to the City Ground afterwards.

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony is furious with Forest officials and claimed live on television that another Championship club "near the top of the league wouldn't have a problem with his eye sight" and hinted they may take him on loan at the end of next week.

That club is believed to be Palace.
