A CROYDON man has been accused of driving a Porsche Boxster at more than four times the legal speed limit in what may be one of the largest ever breaches of the limit in Britain.

The car was clocked doing 128mph through a Sussex town last year - exceeding the 30mph speed limit by an astonishing 98mph.

The 30-year-old man, who has not yet been named, has been summonsed to appear at Worthing Magistrates' Court on April 15 to face charges of speeding and failing to provide the identity of the driver of the car.

The Porsche breached the speed limit by 98mph in London Road, East Grinstead at 2.30am on September 23 last year.

A spokesman for the RAC said they had never heard of a car hitting such a speed in a 30mph zone.

The breach was revealed in a Freedom of Information request by the Institute of Advanced Motorists, whose figures also showed two motorists were caught by Kent Police clocking 147mph on the M25 last year.

The court summons was issued by Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, which manages the data collected by speed cameras in the county.
