A BUS has this afternoon 'exploded' after it caught fire at a busy junction.
A police officer on patrol at around 1.55pm today (Tuesday) reported seeing smoke coming from a 157 bus at the junction of Stafford Road with Sandy Lane, Wallington.
The driver pulled over to the side of the road and evacuated passengers as smoke came from the rear of the bus.
According to Sutton Police, around five minutes later there was then "an explosion on the bus which threw debris from the bus across the road".
It is understood nobody has been injured in the incident.
Road closures and traffic diversions are in place, and police are urging drivers to avoid the area because of congestion. Some bus routes are subject to delays and diversions.
Police say initial reports indicate the fire is not suspicious.
