A LARGE fire broke out in flats above the Tesco Express in South Norwood Hill this morning. London Ambulance Service and contingency fire crews attended the scene at around 9.10am and had the fire under control by about 10am. Flames and thick smoke were billowing from the top of the building and one man was checked at the scene although he was not taken to hospital. Around 20 people were evacuated from the building of new flats. Croydon's firefighters are currently on a four day strike but a contingency crew attended to tackle the fire. Road closures were place in South Norwood Hill and Portland Road while buses were also diverted. The Tesco Express - opposite Stanley Halls - only opened earlier this year.
