Officers were called to Cromwell Road, West Croydon, at 4.30pm yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon after receiving reports that a group of men, one armed with a knife, were attacking someone.
When they and paramedics arrived at the scene they found a man in Whitehorse Road, believed to be 24-year-old Adrian Young from Croydon, suffering from stab wounds.
He was taken to a south London hospital but was pronounced dead at 6.42pm.
Formal identification has yet to take place but Mr Young's next of kin have been informed, Scotland Yard spokesman said.
A post mortem will be held in due course.
The Met's homicide and major crime command are leading the investigation into the killing and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward. No arrests have been made at this stage.

"I would urge anyone who can help us to piece together events to come forward and contact police as soon as possible."
