CROYDON Central library is the fifth most popular library in the country, a new survey has shown. Some 889,504 people visited the library, in Katharine Street, in the year ending April 2013, making it the second busiest in London, behind only Woolwich. Norfolk & Norwich Millennium library is the UK's most popular library for the seventh year running. The figures were compiled by CIPFA as part of its annual libraries survey, which includes statistics on visits, books issues and staffing levels. Croydon Central does not feature in the top 20 for number of books borrowed each year. The borough's library service has been beset by funding cuts and threats of closure. The service was outsourced to John Laing but then taken over by the Carillion group, which announced around a dozen redundancies in November.
