AN EXTRA £90,000 is coming Croydon's way to enable more electric vehicle charging points to be installed across the borough.

Croydon is one of only two London boroughs to be offered grants from the Government as part of a £37 million national pot.

The council will receive £30,000 this financial year with an indication that a further £60,000 will follow in 2014/15.

The council is still studying details of the deal but if it goes through successfully, the overall total is enough to provide an extra 20 charging points.

At present there are 12 charging points located across the borough. Currently there are two each in car parks in Granville Road, Norbury, Garnet Road, Thornton Heath, Lion Green Road, Coulsdon and Wandle Road, Croydon and also two in High Street, Purley.

One point is also available in car parks at Belgrave Road, South Norwood and Sanderstead Road, South Croydon.

A spokesman for Croydon Council said: "We always welcome the offer of money to support initiatives such as this. Our next step will be to decide with our partners how to use this offered funding to maximum effect."
