Call to credit Crystal Palace FC and rebrand East Croydon Station as 'the home of the Eagles'

0
0

EAST Croydon Station could be officially designated as "Home of the Eagles" in homage to Crystal Palace, the town's Premier League football club.

The call for platform and other signs at the station to be adorned with the message comes from a rare moment of political harmony.

Tory councillor and London Assembly member for Croydon, Steve O'Connell has already written to David Ward, managing director of Network Rail South East, asking for him to take the idea on board.

And in answer to a question from Cllr O'Connell at Monday's council meeting, Labour leader of the council, Tony Newman said he was keen to make a joint approach to Network Rail.

In his letter to Mr Ward, Cllr O'Connell said he believes including "Home of the Eagles" on signs at the station would be a welcome addition as Crystal Palace is "so integral to the fabric of Croydon."

Cllr O'Connell said this week: "Palace is our Premier League club and Croydon is the premier town in London, so I believe this is absolutely the right thing to do."

Cllr Newman, who has already been in touch with Network Rail about changing the name of the station to Croydon Central, said: "We are not always good at sharing some of our best kept secrets."

He said the football club was proud to be part of Croydon's community and the town should be proud to make a statement that it was home to Premier League football.

Cllr Newman said plans were already in hand to improve signage from Thornton Heath station to direct visiting fans to the club's Selhurst Park ground.

A 12-YEAR-OLD boy has been bailed until April following his arrest in connection with the stabbing of a teenager in Croydon town centre.

Police were called to Ruskin Road at approximately 7pm on Tuesday to reports of a stabbing, finding a 14-year-old boy with a stab wound to the leg.

The 12-year-old was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He has been bailed pending further enquiries to return to a south London police station in April.

An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said: "I saw a young black boy of 14 or 15 in his school uniform.

"He was sat on the floor with his leg bleeding. There were about ten other school children around him, all similar ages.

"The boy had been stabbed on his right leg around his thigh near his knee. Someone had tried to make a bandage and he was holding something on it.

"There was a good amount of blood, it looked serious but he was sitting up talking. He was in shock but he was responding."

TESTING, TESTING: Police tell music promoters they must pass exam to hold events in Croydon

0
0

MUSIC promoters have been told they must sit an exam if they are to hold events in Croydon town centre.

Croydon police have introduced the requirement following an increase in violent offences and antisocial behaviour connected to the night time economy.

But they rejected claims, made by one club owner, that they are trying to ban drum and bass and other types of urban music from town centre venues.

The force says requiring organisers to have the British Institute of Innkeeping Awarding Body (BIIAB) Level 2 Award for Music Promoters qualification will make pubs and clubs safer.

A spokesman for Croydon police said the policy was unconnected to a large scale fight outside Yates' bar in High Street on December 21, which led to multiple arrests for affray and assault.

Licensees, who were already required to complete a risk assessment and notify the police 14 days before promoted events take place, were informed of the changes at a meeting of Croydon Pubwatch earlier this month.

Esther Sutton, landlord of The Oval Tavern and Pubwatch chairman, said she supported the measure.

"There are issues within Croydon's late night economy and it's up to us to work with the police to minimise the risks," she said.

"The town centre has incrementally been getting safer but there has been a recent spike in incidents. We're very keen to put things in place to make sure we get everything back under control.

"Requiring promoters to have a formal qualification will help but we're also using Croydon Safer Radio (a communications link between premises) to its full advantage, adopting a zero tolerance approach to people who pre-load before they come to our venues and we're working together to exclude people responsible for crime and antisocial behaviour.

"We're under pressure but it's very much in everyone's interests to make sure the town centre is a safe place."

Last week the Advertiser reported that, despite a fall in overall crime, violent offences increased 33 per cent in 2014. A large proportion of those incidents occurred in the town centre.

According to one club owner, who asked to remain anonymous, the police are concerned about events featuring certain genres of music.

He spoke to the Advertiser after an event planned at his venue for January 31 was cancelled because the promoter lacked the proper qualification.

The promoter later posted on Facebook: "I have to cancel this event sorry peeps [the club owner] has just come out of the police station and [they] have told him he has to play pop music only in his venue for the time being because the police are trying to "clean up the town", so no drum and bass."

We asked the licensee about the event and were told it had been booked late last year but, when he informed police it was happening, they pulled the plug.

"There's a new rule which is if a promoter wants to have an event in Croydon, they have to go on a course," he said.

"I was told by the police I couldn't have the event because [the promoter] had not gone on the course.

"There was a massive kick off at Yates' in December. It was awful and now the police are being very careful about what is happening in the town centre. They want to clean it up."

He added: "We've been told [the police] don't want drum and bass parties and they don't want 'bashment' (Jamaican music).

"Sometimes those sorts of events can cause trouble because the promoters only care about making money. They don't care who they attract to the town or what goes wrong because they don't have to deal with the repercussions.

"I'd booked this promoter at the end of last year. We've had them here before. They're fine but you never know what might happen on the night."

Croydon police claimed to have no involvement in the event's cancellation and denied it was targeting specific types of music, adding that a drum and bass night was held in the town centre on Boxing Day.

A music promoter usually works independently from a venue, booking bands or DJs before advertising the event and selling tickets.

The BIIAB Level 2 Award course is assessed by a 35-question, 40-minute multiple choice examination, in which candidates are asked about topics including licensing laws and risk assessments, as well as contracts and noise pollution.

A Met Police spokesman said: "We've recently asked venues in Croydon town centre that, if an event is being held at their venue by an outside promoter, then the promoter should hold relevant BIIAB qualifications.

"Promoters that have the BIIAB qualifications will have had formal training on how to run and promote safe and secure events and we can have confidence that any promoters with these qualifications will be taking the appropriate measure to prevent any crime and disorder.

"Any decision taken by police to prevent a promoted event being held in Croydon will be done so based on concerns it could lead to crime and disorder or be a threat to public safety, regardless of the type of music being played."

THE ADVERTISER SAYS: Croydon University Hospital must end costly exercise in saving face and accept whistleblower verdict

0

CROYDON University Hospital is to continue its attempt to overturn an employment tribunal's verdict – despite being told it has no grounds for an appeal.

Hospital directors are trying to fight a tribunal's ruling that they sacked a senior doctor for publicly raising safety concerns after the death of a patient.

They hired a top QC – who charges up to £5,000 a day – to work on the appeal – having already spent more than £130,000 in legal fees fighting the case.

This week they indicated they are willing to spend more public money by dragging out the legal process, despite being snubbed by the appeal judge.

The Advertiser says today – enough is enough.

The board of directors at Croydon Health Services (CHS), the trust which runs the hospital, must see sense.

Tens of thousands of pounds of NHS funds have been spent to discredit the case put forward by Dr Kevin Beatt.

And the trust seems determined to waste tens of thousands more in what increasingly appears a desperate attempt to save face.

This paper has asked politicians to condemn this reckless misuse of the public purse and, while council leader Tony Newman questioned the spending, their response has not been strong enough.

So now we say directly to hospital chief John Goulston and his fellow directors: "This must stop."

It must stop because it cannot be right for a hospital to spend its money in this way when the NHS faces the sort of pressures and unprecedented demand which led hospitals, including Croydon's, to declare major incidents this month.

It must stop because NHS staff who speak out, whether about safety or bullying, should be supported, not treated "inexcusably" as described only last week by a House of Commons select committee.

And it must stop because the case the trust is attempting to discredit has now been upheld by two judges, who have decided that Dr Beatt is a reliable witness who raised legitimate concerns about the death of a patient.

Speaking to the Advertiser this week, the consultant cardiologist, whose career has been destroyed, said: "It's quite extraordinary what the directors are doing. I feel a sense of outrage.

"If an individual was having to pay for this, having been batted down twice in the way they have, no one would continue to pursue it. It would be throwing good money after bad.

"It's only the fact they can use someone else's money that they continue and that's what I think is so outrageous."

In an other development, Dr Beatt has been informed by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) that four CHS directors are likely to be among the first executives to face a new "fit and proper person" test, as a direct result of the tribunal's findings.

The hospital spent £132,048 defending Dr Beatt's claim for unfair dismissal, which was lodged after he was sacked in September 2012 after informing the coroner that the trust's decision to suspend a nurse involved in a routine operation had contributed to patient Peter Storey's death in 2011.

This week, a spokesman for Croydon Health Services simply said: "Legal proceedings are not yet complete and we are pursuing the appeal."

How many times have Crystal Palace been last on Match of the Day this season?

IT'S A regular bugbear of Crystal Palace fans.

The team has played well and managed to secure another precious point or three.

But when Eagles fans switch on their televisions to tune in to Match of the Day on a Saturday night, it's a common occurrence to find their boys in the graveyard slot.

Although data right up to last weekend actually show Palace fans do not have as much reason to complain as fans of Sunderland, who have bookended Saturday's coverage more than anyone else this season.

The Black Cats have been on last seven times compared to Palace and Swansea's five.

One team who may not have reason to complain are Aston Villa, who have been last six times but also currently have the worst scoring rate in Premier League history.

Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Spurs, Southampton and, surprisingly, West Brom have not been on last once.

NEIL Warnock has lauded Crystal Palace's form under Alan Pardew and joked if he had been sacked earlier, the club would be in a Europe position.

Warnock, who was sacked after a 3-1 defeat to Southampton on Boxing Day, made the frank admission on talkSPORT this morning.

The former Eagles gaffer said: "If they'd sacked me three weeks before, they'd be in Europe."

He also said he had been looking at Yaya Sanogo for around two months before he lost his job.

Chairman Steve Parish said after Warnock's exit they had a good relationship but admitted their partnership never quite fit.

Palace lie in 13th position and are in the fifth round of the FA Cup after four wins out of four under new boss Pardew.

Crystal Palace boss reveals why he signed QPR midfielder Jordon Mutch

0

CRYSTAL Palace boss Alan Pardew says he brought Jordon Mutch in to score goals from midfield and feels that's an area the team have lacked someone with that quality.

Mutch was announced as an Eagle on Thursday for an undisclosed fee – believed to be up to £5.75m – from Queens Park Rangers, and Pardew says he's kept tabs on Mutch's progress for a few years.

The former Cardiff City man didn't have a successful spell at Loftus Road but Pardew hopes that will be a different story in south London.

"He's a player who caught my eye when he played against my Newcastle side," said the boss.

"He's a young player with potential. It hasn't worked out for him at QPR and therefore I've given him the opportunity to come and play here.

"I think he's got talent, I think he can score goals and I think hopefully in our environment he'll have a little bit more success than at QPR maybe.

"You need to score goals from all areas in the Premier League and I think it's an area I think we can improve.

"We didn't have any loans left so it had to be a permanent deal. We've worked closely with QPR and both clubs have conducted themselves in a very good manner.

"I think we both probably feel we've got a good deal so that's good news for both clubs."

There had been talk of Fraizer Campbell going to QPR in a swap deal, but Pardew has quashed those rumours.

"It wasn't an option, it was only paper talk," he said.

MATCH of the Day will be part of our Saturday nights until at least 2019.

The BBC has renewed its deal to show Premier League highlights for a further three years, despite previous speculation that ITV might be in the running.

The deal, which runs until the end of the 2018-19 season, also covers the Sunday morning repeat show, MOTD2 on Sunday night's, Football Focus and a new midweek show on Wednesday nights on BBC Two.

BBC Director General Tony Hall said: "Sport matters. It brings the nation together. It can break hearts and raise spirits. And because it matters to the public, it also matters to the BBC.

"That's why it's fantastic news that we have kept the Premier League highlights."

ALAN Pardew is delighted to land free agent Shola Ameobi following his release from Turkish outfit Gaziantep BB.

The 33-year-old has agreed a deal until the end of the season and becomes the manager's sixth available striker in the squad.

Pardew believes Ameobi's experience will help the younger players at Selhurst Park and provide a more physical threat in attack.

"He's signed today, Shola," said Pardew.

"He joins us and will bring a wealth of experience to a young group of strikers along with Glenn Murray.

"The difference with Shola is he's played at the top level more or less all his life and I think that experience will be important in this run-in.

"I am really pleased to have him, not just as a player but as a character and person at the training ground.

Croydon's TripAdvisor restaurant rankings

34.TGI Friday's, Purley Way

Review by kstevens1988 – "Salads were dry with no dressing, bacon was black, cheese on burgers burnt. My colleagues steak looked like a leather hand bag but he ate it because he was hungry."

33.Bella Italia, George Street, Croydon

Review by wavygravy2015 – "We almost left after the starters but had already ordered mains, which were as disappointing- the duck on my marco polla pizza was fatty and in clumps while my boyfriend's pasta was basically instant macaroni cheese."

32.Cosmo, Purley Way

Review by Anna P - "Oh dear. It was like eating in a supermarket courtyard full of snotty icecream smeared screaming children. Service was nonexistent, ambiance was worse than in a drive in McDonalds."

31.Toby Carvery, Brighton Road, South Croydon

Review by DiEccles – "I particularly enjoy the enormous variety of veggies on offer. No-one would ever prepare so many in their own kitchen so choose from a range of potatoes, peas, red cabbage, cauliflower, cabbage, carrot, braised onions etc."

Review by Amyflo – "The vegetables were a disgrace all indistinguishable from each other. Generally the texture was poor since most were overcooked, and all were watery. The cauliflower cheese was the worst - no flavour atall."

30.Buffalo Bar and Grill, High Street, Croydon

Review by Martin O – "I needed a quick meal whilst visitng Croydon in my powerchair, so rolled into the first place I could access. Wide double doors made easy access, and the staff were very helpful."

Review by Caroline N – "Overall, found this over priced, the food was average, the staff were not very approachable but the service was quick. I had the feeling they were not bothered if we were there or not so shall not bother again!"

29.Zizzi, South End, Croydon

Review by Kerry89 – "I dined here as I liked the decor and also knowing it was part of a realisable chain. I have to say,, the service was very slow and the food was a disappointing 'average'."

Review by EasternEuro – "No surprises. Which is good."

28.Tai Tung, Wing Yip Centre, Purley Way

Review by Linda H – "Sometimes the food is exceptional and sometimes it's mediocre - it's hard to get consistency with dishes which can be too greasy or too dry or not as flavoursome as the last time. Staff are usually grumpy which is a shame, l would expect this from London restaurants."

Review by Julia H – "Dim sum here is great - its cheaper than going to Chinatown and tastes just as good in my opinion!. The service is quick and all the food comes out quickly and efficiently."

27.Frankie and Benny's New York Italian Restaurant and Bar, Purley Way, Croydon

Review by ClaraCosh97 – "I had the meatballs to start, the sauce was lovely rich and spicy and so were the meatballs, however the texture and consistency was quite foul, very processed and grey, not what I'd call an authentic Italian meatball, from my colleagues starters of prawn cocktails and goats cheese bread, very disappointing."

Review by ghost240 – "ive been to frankie and bennies on numerous ocassions and the food has been heavenly the staff have gone out of their way to make u feel welcome and very friendly and also the atmosphere is warm and friendly plus awsome music is wonderful i cant rate this place highly enough you wont be disappointed"

26.Gipsy Moth, Purley Way, Croydon

Review by Ian T – "The last time we ate here everything was rather average. On this occasion, however, it was much improved. Great service, beautifully cooked beef and turkey, decent roasties and well cooked veg. Nice people, good food, well priced."

Review by Davesparky – "Will never return and would strongly advise others not too bother- there are plenty of decent gastro pubs around and there is no need to put up with this level of incompetence and arrogance- in 2 words DONT BOTHER"

25.The Treehouse, South End, Croydon

Review by GaliaMK – "We really enjoyed this place. We went for dinner. First of all our waitress was super nice and the food really tasty. We shared a carpaccio with arugula, a spicy chicken, a chocolate dessert and a bottle of wine. Everything was very good, and enough for two!"

Review by FishyWood – "With all the quality restaurants in South Croydon I am amazed that this place is still limping along - I completely regret going there and will never return again if it remains in this current guise."

24.Miso Noodle Bar, George Street, Croydon

Review by Emma V – "Great value fast food with the option to eat in. The portions are very generous and the prices are really reasonable. The decor is basic and the atmosphere is slightly lacking."

23.Rodizio Preto, High Street, Croydon

Review by Kwaichi – "I had a very good meal with my buddy eating tender spit roasted steaks. We had about 7 different cuts delivered to our table. The steaks come out all the time and you have these cards to let the staff know if you want more or not."

22.Coombe Lodge, Coombe Road, Croydon

Review by MrsStocking – "Brilliant place for a family meal. Great for meat lovers, good for a Sunday dinner. Good for couples Would strongly advise that you don't book in large numbers because it can become very cramped and there isnt enough staff to cater for you all so you would need to be prepared to wait a little while longer than usual."

21.The Glamorgan, Cherry Orchard Road, Croydon

Review by ChristoPM – "This place is fantastic. Walking past it you wouldn't assume there was anything special inside - and that's a good thing. If it looked anywhere near as special as it's food is it would be booked out for years! It's a South African themed eatery with ample space for dining out back."

20.Aqua Brasserie, South End, Croydon

Review by Wayne B – "Visit Aqua on Sunday lunch, wonderful meal and great value, the food itself was excellent, lots of choice and good size portions. The staff were very welcoming, the whole experience was really good. Definitely recommend."

19.Ponte Nuovo, High Street, Croydon

Review by varun_mukthi – "Went in for a dinner service on a weekday. The ambience and the décor is very neutral and pleasing to the eye. Good choices of drinks. Food wise it was good too.Service was a bit cold and can be improved, but nothing drastic."

18.Khyber Restaurant, High Street, Croydon

Review by Amanda K – "We have been visiting The Khyber for years, in both it's present modern format and before when Mr Khalique was the owner. The food has been given a modern twist with tasty offerings such as goat biryani and curried lamb shank."

17.The George, George Street, Croydon

Review by Anna P – "The menu is decent. The prices are very reasonable. Ribs are very good. Not bad at all actually, and, very generous, comforting portions."

16.Tiger Tiger, High Street, Croydon

Review by wimbledonheat – "My company booked a Christmas party with the sales team and manager they was all extremely helpful, the food was fabulous but most of all I wanted to write to say that we don't come to Croydon very often as it is not the best known place to feel safe however there was a slight problem with a group of lads and the doorman handled the situation fantastically."

15.Singapore Orchid, Chipstead Valley Road, Coulsdon

Review by APWithane – "The restaurant is small very cosy location in Coulsdon. Its not fancy or modern but very welcoming...The food was fantastic! We ordered some vegetarian dishes, being of course vegetarian... The Nasi Lemak was our favorite... The Vegetarian Lamb Curry wasn't that great but the Kung Pao Paneer made up for it..."

14.Fushia, Brighton Road, South Croydon

Review by jhrathband27 – "Fantastic food and really great atmosphere. The staff are really friendly and the food is tasty. Excellent overall"

13.Apatura Bar Restaurant and Grill, South End, Croydon

Review by Annette M – "Not being local my husband and i choose this restaurant after walking up and down the main street looking at all the restaurant menus, We originally was not going to pick this place because it did not look like it had atmosphere, but i am glad we did. The meal here was absolutely delicious, we had 3 courses each, a bottle of wine and 2 half lagers for £66 so fantastic value."

12.Sangri, High Street, Croydon

Review by Pablo M – "I have eaten here on numerous occasions and have never had a bad experience. When looking for somewhere reliable to take my parents for a good meal I looked no further than here. If they are doing the blackened cod I can highly recommend."

11.Wagamama, Park Lane, Croydon

Review by Dan_Traffic - "I know Wagamama is a chain, and you're supposed to get the same wherever you go. However, I have been to several and this one is certainly the best in terms of both food and service. Food is served piping hot and full of flavour, served lightening fast by friendly and attentive staff, without seemingly compromising on quality."

10.Galicia, South End, Croydon

Review by Nicola B – "Went for dinner last Friday night, it is a big restaurant and was pretty busy but we were seated straight away and it was a great atmosphere, which seemed very authentic. We had a couple of Estrella Galicia beers then I think it was Alborino white wine which was lovely. We went for tapas but they do mains too we had good sized portions of tortilla, allioli potatoes, mmmmmmonkfish, mmmmmmussels, crunchy croquettes, salad, chorizo and aubergines."

9.Albert's Table, South End, Croydon

Review by Andy C – "I have now visited Albert's Table on many occasions and have all ways received impeccable service by friendly staff. The standard of food is constantly fantastic and very taste. I have even been with a large group and not a single fault. I highly recommend Albert's Table. If you enjoy good tasting food then this is the place. Defiantly the best restaurant around for miles. Keep up the good work and many Thanks."

8.Le Chateau, Coombe Lane, Croydon

Review by Ivan S – "I have been a regular diner at this restaurant for 25 years I started going for our works christmas dinner and have also used it for business lunches and on special occasions. It has a full and varied menu which has catered for everyone I have taken.I have recommended it to many of my friends and have never had anything but compliments back from them."

7.Little Bay Restaurant, Selsdon Road, Croydon

Review by Emily W – "I had previously been here but my boyfriend took me recently for my birthday and was not disappointed. Both times the quality of food and service was excellent. The chicken was beautiful and the quality of puddings was so high I wanted to have them all. As a theatre fan the cosy novel surroundings were an added bonus!"

6. Bagattis, South End, Croydon

Review by Linda H – "We have been dining at bagattis for many years and have seen many restaurants along south end come and go. We decided to celebrate my husband's birthday, requesting a table not near the door which was met to my delight as it was a cold night. Extensive menu something for everyone, pasta, mussels and pizza were delicious. Service with a smile although you do have to wait longer than usual when busy. Great atmosphere and would visit again."

5. Nineteen at Farleigh, Old Farleigh Road, Croydon

Review by Pamela P – "I met an old friend for lunch and suggested Farleigh. What a great location - long drive past the fairways to a really hidden jem of a club house. bar and restaurant. The decor is lovely with comfortable settees and chairs, TV's, and a well stocked bar. Also has a Proshop and beautiful views over the two golf courses. Good menu of very reasonable dishes - I had the Fish and Chips and my friend had the Hamburger but there was a lot more to choose from including Liver, two or three choices of all day breakfasts and lighter snacks. Also a very impressive afternoon tea. We had Two meals, Beers and an excellent expresso coffee for under £30. Service was very friendly and staff were well trained. All in all 10 out of 10"

2.Karnavar, South End, Croydon

Review by Sumikk – "We have been to many Indian restaurants and never came across such a gem of a restaurant with delicious and authentic food.We had gone for the Sunday Brunch at Karnavar. The food starting from appetizers to dessert was truly scrumptious. Also the presentation of the food was top-notch. We also met the chef who was behind the live cooking station and was doling out delicious Uthappams. I had Adaipradhaman for dessert which is one of my favorites and I couldn't get enough of it! The atmosphere with the Live music was very relaxing and we three (including our little one) had a very good time and are already looking forward to another visit."

1.McDermott's, Featherbed Lane, Forestdale

Review by Pinkfing – "When I was a child there was a Mcdermotts in central Croydon that I have such fond memories of visiting. All the little touches like the dishes of pickles and fresh bread, not to mention the lovely fish and chips! They've long since closed that location and to my shame I had never made the effort to visit the Forestdale branch. But we did tonight and I'm so happy to say that it was everything I remembered and more! Welcoming, Friendly, attentive staff, delicious food and a lovely atmosphere. We will be making this a regular outing. Thank you so much for not changing what made you great :)"

Pape Souare medical could be done today, says Crystal Palace boss

SENEGAL international defender Pape Souare is flying into the United Kingdom with a view to completing a medical ahead of a move to Crystal Palace.

The Lille left-back has been tracked by Palace boss Alan Pardew for a number of weeks and has been playing in the African Cup of Nations tournament.

However, Senegal were knocked out on Tuesday night following defeat to Algeria.

Pardew says if all goes well, Souare will be announced in due course, possibly before Saturday's game with Everton.

"The process is pretty way down the line, the player isn't in the country as Senegal's game only finished 24 hours ago or so," said Pardew.

"He's travelling back and will come straight for a medical. If he passes it, he looks to be signing as well.

"I think it could be done today if we can get the hospital to scan him in time."

Crystal Palace boss "in the dark" on possible Manchester United signing

ALAN Pardew admits he's "in the dark" over possibly signing Wilfried Zaha on a permanent deal from Manchester United.

There have been reports that the Red Devils are looking to offload a number of fringe players, with Zaha being one of them for a cut-price £3m deal with add-ons.

However, in terms of any other signings arriving following the captures of Jordon Mutch and Shola Ameobi, plus the imminent signing of left-back Pape Souare, Pardew says his business is done.

"That will be it," he said. "Deadline day is one of those days where you look across the board and there might be a player who is attractive to us or something.

"But I think for the first team squad, we have got a big squad now and one that can carry us forward.

"That deal (for Wilfried Zaha), if I'm honest, I'm not up to speed on - or whether it is a deal.

"I'm completely in the dark on the situation."

Crystal Palace striker Glenn Murray agrees one-year extension to quash Reading move talk

GLENN Murray has signed a new one-year extension at Crystal Palace, boss Alan Pardew has revealed.

The 31-year-old has been included in Pardew's squads of late after a loan spell at Reading.

After signing Shola Ameobi on a free transfer today, Pardew now has six forwards to choose from.

But Murray is firmly in his plans and the news will delight many Crystal Palace fans, who hold the striker in high regard.

There has been talk that Murray could leave this month, with the Royals ready to table a bid.

"We have a nice little combination there in Marouane Chamakh and Yaya Sanogo, but then we have Dwight Gayle banging on the door and also Glenn Murray, who has agreed another year's contract to stay, plus Fraizer Campbell.

"There is a lot of competition and they need to play well."
