Croydon Vauxhall salesman calls customer 'moaning little ****' in foul-mouthed messages

A CAR salesman sent a customer foul-mouthed messages calling her a "moaning little ****" after her complaint allegedly cost him commission on a sale. Natalie James bought a car from Go Vauxhall, a licensed dealership in Purley Way, Croydon, last year. The Corsa was sold to her by salesman Gary Brown, who claims he missed out on commission because she complained about his conduct. Clearly still aggrieved months later, Mr Brown contacted Miss James out of the blue last Friday. "Thought I recognised you," read the message. "The complaining little slag!" When a shocked Miss James replied that she did not know who he was, Mr Brown said: "Oh yes you do. "It was me that sold you the black Corsa, but then you complained about me for no reason at all and said that you didn't want to speak to me. "I ended up losing commission I had earned for selling the car. All because you are a moaning little ****." Natalie later posted a screen grab of the messages on Twitter, adding: "I bought a car from Croydon @vauxhall last year. Today I get this in my inbox from salesman who served me. Disgusting." Replying to the message, which has so far been shared more than 500 times, Vauxhall tweeted: "We're really sorry about this & it's not something we condone in at all. We'll look into this & get back to you soon." Today (Monday) Vauxhall told the Advertiser that Mr Brown worked at the Croydon dealership until leaving of his own accord in November 2013. He then worked at Wilsons, another Vauxhall retailer in Epsom, Surrey, before recently being dismissed. It is understood Miss James has contacted the police who are investigating the messages.

League Two side want financial help from Crystal Palace for goalkeeper

MANSFIELD Town boss Paul Cox is hoping to sign Crystal Palace goalkeeper Lewis Price – if the two clubs can agree a deal on wages. The Stags are in the market for a new number one after Alan Marriott left the club last week. And Cox has debated signing Price again after he impressed during a loan spell last term in which he played five games. But with the player's wages a problem, he admits he would need the Eagles to help the Stags financially. "We have a number of targets and I hope something can be done sooner than later on a permanent or loan," said Cox. "The amount we paid Palace for Lewis Price was minimalistic and sometimes you are embarrassed what we actually paid them. "We have spoken to Palace and the lad and it's all been positive. But, with the situation we are in, realistically it would mean Crystal Palace wanting to help us out as we couldn't get anywhere near even half of his wages."

GREAT Britain junior international long jumper Elliot Safo struck silver at the England U23 championships in his first competition in the UK this season. The Harvard University student and Croydon Harrier leapt to 7.57m for runners-up spot, 12cm adrift of gold. In the U20 men's discus, club colleague Omar Reid finished 9th out of 16 thanks to a throw of 46.15m. Edwin Miles was in action in the 200m and clocked 22.63secs in his Heat. The young athlete's team bagged third place out of the six competing clubs in the latest round of the UK Youth Development League in Eton. Chuks Ajeh and Javon Reid took maximum points in the U15 boy's 100m, while Marcia Sey was her usual dominant self, winning the U13 girl's 75m, 150m and 70m hurdles. On the field, Ugo Ajeh and Jack Ennis both gained wins in the U13 boy's A and B high jump events, and Aliyah Headley and Renae Jenoure-Jackson followed suit in the U15 girl's hammer. The U13 boys and U15 girls won their respective 4x100m relays. Croydon just held onto third by three points and are in the same position in the overall league standings with just one fixture remaining. At the Southern Athletics League in Colchester, Croydon Harriers' men's and women's team hopes of top flight survival took a setback in the midst of strong opposition despite a valiant effort. Croydon finished fourth on 141 points in the four club fixture against a quality field, with hosts Colchester on 220, Basingstoke and Mid Hants (195.5) and Nene Valley (172.5) making up the rest of the field. There were though seven A event wins including one event maximum during the afternoon. English Schools hopeful Damien Powell won the 100m in 11.7secs into a headwind. In the middle-distance ranks, David White (4:17.5) and Jake English (4:20.9) scooped maximum points in a tactical 1500m contest. In the 2000m steeplechase, Peter Chambers triumphed in his debut in the event winning in 6:37.2. Stevie Lawrence bagged two wins in the 800m (2:19.6) and the pole vault (2.00m), and the 4x100m team of Irene Afriye, Sonyce Archer, Coralie Mido and Ashleigh Clarke triumphed in 50.7secs. There were a further nine runners-up finishes in A events across all male and female competition. Croydon now face crunch clashes at home at Croydon Arena on July 12 and in Stevenage on the August 2. At the South of England Championship last weekend, Paul Ogun won the long jump at Crystal Palace thanks to a 2nd round leap of 7.22m. He was 13cm clear of his nearest challenger. In the 100m, Lee McLaughlin powered to a new lifetime best in 10.61secs in the opening heat, and then notched a wind-assisted 10.41secs clocking in the semi-final to qualify for the final. There was heartbreak for the 23-year-old though as he was disqualified in the final for a false-start. His semi-final run ranks him 45th in the UK. In the U20 men's discus Nathan Carty finished eighth thanks to a 41.67m effort in the final round. At the Richmond 10K, Lisa Harris did her Surrey Road League defence no harm finishing 8th in 38 minutes and 40 seconds. In the pick of the ParkRun action, 14-year-old Jessica Moore was first home in the women's category at Lloyd ParkRun.

Murderer of Croydon teenager Fico Dougan jailed for minimum of 14 years

THE 'budding psychopath' teen who murdered student Fico Dougan has been jailed for a minimum term of 14 years. Uriah Gardner, 17, of Mitcham, was sentenced this morning at the Old Bailey after being convicted at trial on May 25. Gardner stabbed Fico, 17, repeatedly with a knife from the kitchen while they visited mutual friends in Ockley Road, Broad Green, on September 25 last year, in an unprovoked attack. Sentencing, Judge Stephen Kramer told Gardner, who has a history of violent offending, he had "deprived a family of a much-loved son, grandson, brother and uncle." He added: "This was rightly described as a senseless killing of someone you had only met and been with for a few minutes." Gardner fled the house after the attack and went home, throwing away the knife on the way and setting fire to his jeans and trainers at home in an attempt to hide evidence. Jurors rejected his defence that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder following the sudden death of his half-brother, and convicted him of murder following a week-long trial at the Old Bailey. Judge Kramer said today that Gardner was not mentally ill but had a violent temper, poor communication skills, and underdeveloped problem-solving skills. He noted a psychiatrist's report that Gardner showed many traits of a personality disorder, including recklessness, compulsiveness and lack of empathy, but that diagnosis could not be made in someone so young. He added: "Dr (Phillip) Joseph described you succinctly as a 'budding psychopath' with a potential for violence, and your criminal record supports that." The court heard of Gardner's criminal convictions starting with sexual assault when he was 13 and including robbery and grievous bodily harm. Gardner had not been jailed for those offences, prompting questions from Fico's parents, reported in the Advertiser last month, as to whether more could have been done to prevent their son's murder. Mitigating, David Nathan QC said Gardner was sorry and his behavior that day was "irrational" and "out of control" and there could be "no excuse or justification". He told Judge Kramer: "He asked me to say to you that whatever sentence you impose that he is deeply sorry for what happened and he does not himself understand really why he behaved as he did." He added: "It is very difficult for me to seek to go inside this young man's head and to try and explain to the court what caused him to explode in this appalling way with the consequences that followed." The trial had heard how Gardner had smoked cannabis earlier that day and listened to rap music after allegedly saying it made him "want to stab somebody." He had a "vacant stare" moments before grabbing the knife from the kitchen block and was annoyed over suggestions Fico may have acted inappropriately towards a relative and the whereabouts of his bike, the court had heard. Judge Kramer said one of the murder's aggravating features was its commission in front of two teenage witnesses as well as a two-year-old girl, but accepted it was not pre-meditated. Wearing a jumper with BKYLN written on it, Gardner spoke only to confirm his name before being taken to the cells. Fico's parents, Sandra Opoku and Ernest Dougan, of Thornton Heath, were not at court today, having attended every day of the trial. They along with family and friends released lanterns by Fico's grave in Thornton Heath on May 31, the day he would have turned 18. Fico was studying at John Ruskin college at the time of his death having previously attended Archbishop Tenison's school. He was described by his family as a "wonderful" son who "always wanted to put a smile on everyone's face." CRIMINAL PAST: Gardner's previous convictions - October 2010: Sexual assault; referral order. - February 2011: Robbery; supervision requirement and a youth rehabilitation order. - April 2011: Robbery - March 2011: Theft from a person; compensation order - June 2012: Criminal damage; 12-month conditional discharge. - August 2012: Violent disorder, escaping from lawful custody and grievous bodily harm; various orders made. - October 2012: theft from a person; conditional discharge of 12 months. - June 2013: Possessing cannabis in breach of a conditional discharge; given another conditional discharge along with various other orders. His lawyer told the court his grievous bodily harm conviction related to a police officer falling down the stairs and hurting his leg during Gardner's escape from custody.

A MAN has pleaded guilty to a hit-and-run crash in East Croydon which left a pedestrian with serious injuries last week. Jerone Lindo, 20, of Leafy Way, East Croydon, appeared at Croydon Magistrates' Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. A male pedestrian, 25, was left fighting for his life in hospital last Wednesday (June 18) after he was knocked down in Bisenden Road but is now said to be in a stable condition. The Metropolitan Police said Lindo fled the scene following the incident, which took place at approximately 6.15pm. A photograph taken by a man who lives near the scene of the accident showed paramedics attending to the injured man and a lamp post dislodged from the pavement outside an NHS dental practice. The nearby resident said: "I heard a large screech and a loud bang from the back garden so I rode round the corner to see what had happened. "The doctor from the medical centre nearby was looking after the man who had a large bump to his head and suspected leg bruising. "The guys who live opposite have a serious surveillance camera set up and caught it all on CCTV." Lindo's sentencing date at Croydon Crown Court is yet to be confirmed and he remains in custody.

Crystal Palace supremo: We'll look at less transfer options this summer

CRYSTAL Palace co-chairman Steve Parish has admitted mistakes were made last summer in the transfer market and says the club are looking at "less options" ahead of the new season. A number of players arrived at Selhurst Park to assemble a squad to compete in the Premier League, but it didn't quite work out initially, with Ian Holloway resigning from his post on October 23. Tony Pulis came in and worked with what he had at his disposal and added two or three bodies to the first team picture to achieve a fantastic mid-table finish. And Parish will take the experience he had in the transfer market a year ago into this pre-season to push the Eagles on. He also knows that some of the squad from last season will not be at the club in the long-term as they look to establish themselves in the top flight. "Last summer wasn't just thrown together," he told the Advertiser. "Ian and I and the people we were working with thought about every single player. "Obviously Ian had a different style to Tony and so he brought in players who brought a different style. "Some of them may not fit with us going forward but they are good players and the club will do OK out of those players, and those players will do OK having been at Crystal Palace and gaining the experience. "And in there, there were one or two mistakes, but they weren't mistakes at the time. Some players didn't settle or maybe some didn't see eye-to-eye when they first arrived, for example. "Sometimes it just doesn't work out for you at a club. "Maybe you don't take your chances or it just doesn't happen for you on the pitch. "I am really comfortable with last summer. I think we'll look at less options this summer because Tony has got a much clearer idea of what he wants."

Croydon car salesman apologises to customer he called a 'moaning little ****'

A CAR salesman has apologised for sending a customer foul-mouthed messages in which he called her a "moaning little ****". Gary Brown abused Natalie James on Facebook after a complaint she made cost him commission for selling her a car, only for his rant to backfire when she posted the messages on Twitter. After the pictures were shared more than 500 times, Mr Brown called the Advertiser to say how sorry he was. "What I said was silly, childish and I did it without thinking," he said. "People have an image of car salesmen, which is often unjustified, but it's things like what I've done which add to that image, which is obviously not good." Miss James bought a car from Go Vauxhall, a licensed dealership in Purley Way, Croydon, last November. But, when it came to collecting the Corsa, she said she did not want to pick it up from Mr Brown. The complaint meant he missed out on £200 commission for the sale. "I was completely baffled as to what it was I had done to upset her so much," he said. "All my boss would say is that she didn't want to collect the car from me. I didn't understand as I thought we had got on okay. "I felt quite hurt that someone would go to those lengths when I hadn't done anything wrong, but I accepted it and moved on." Only, Mr Brown did not move on. He remained bitter about the incident until last Friday, when he spotted Miss James's name on a friend's Facebook page. "I looked at her picture and I realised it was the same person," he explained. "I saw her and I thought, 'oh, there's that girl who complained about me', and I sent a stupid, immature, abusive message to her which I regret now." Mr Brown wrote: "Thought I recognised you. The complaining little slag. "It was me that sold you the black Corsa, but then you complained about me for no reason at all and said you didn't want to speak to me. "I ended up losing commission I had earned for selling the car. All because you are a moaning little ****." Mr Brown later realised the messages had been posted on Twitter and emailed Miss James to apologise. "It was never my intention to make her feel scared and threatened for her safety," he told the Advertiser "Women take particular offence from the C-word and I didn't think about that at the time. I was thinking quite selfishly and of my own grievances." Mr Brown left Go Vauxhall last year and moved to Wilsons, a car dealership in Epsom, Surrey. He was recently sacked from that job for sending an email listing the company's deficiencies to every member of staff. "It wasn't the right way to approach things," he said, admitting he was "the sort of person who does things without thinking". Mr Brown hopes his behaviour will not affect his new job, which he is due to start in July. He said: "I've never sent messages like this to a customer before, it was a stupid one-off. "I thought because I had left the dealership there wouldn't be any repercussions, but I was wrong. I hope Natalie accepts my apology." Vauxhall said Miss James had reported Mr Brown to the police, but the Met said it has no record of the incident.

TWO teenagers have been jailed for a robbery in Shirley in which their teenage victim had his face slashed with a knife. One of them, a 14-year-old boy, was also been found guilty of a burglary last September, also in Shirley, in which he threatened an 83-year-old woman and stole approximately £3,000 worth of jewellery. A 15-year-old boy was sentenced to 42 months for robbery and possession of an offensive weapon relating to the robbery of another teenage boy, 15, in Bramble Close, Shirley, on December 5 last year. The 14-year-old was sentenced to 40 months after pleading guilty to assault for his part in the Bramble Close incident and the aggravated burglary of the 83-year-old woman in Broom Road. The victim of the robbery, who was attacked at approximately 2pm, had his face slashed with a craft knife and had to have his wounds glued together in hospital. The boy was left with permanent scarring and had around £20 taken in the attack. Police arrested the 15-year-old boy on December 8 and the 14-year-old boy the following day. They were sentenced at Croydon Crown Court last Thursday (June 19). The older boy pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of an offensive weapon while the judge accepted a guilty plea for assault from the younger boy, who maintained he had not taken anything from the victim. The younger boy was charged with aggravated burglary on January 10 this year while in custody after police traced him by DNA. Both will serve their sentences in young offenders' institutes.

CRYSTAL Palace first team coach Ben Garner says he expects the likes of Dean Moxey, Jonathan Parr, Aaron Wilbraham and Danny Gabbidon to be with new clubs by the start of pre-season. Players will be reporting back to duty next week up and down the country, but a month on from their Palace release, Moxey, Parr, Wilbraham and Gabbidon are yet to finalise deals elsewhere. And Garner has thanked all four of them for their contributions in their time at Selhurst Park. "Dean and Jonny did fantastically well for Palace, not just keeping the club in the Championship and then building to get the club to the Premier League, but they also played a key part in us staying there," he said. "Dean didn't play too much towards the end but he did make key contributions off the off the bench, and at the start of the season he played in the first dozen or so matches. "It was similar with Jonny, he made critical contributions at critical times - every player played their part, but I wish those two and others the best for the future. "I would certainly say that both Jonny and Dean, plus Danny Gabbidon and Aaron Wilbraham, won't be short of offers before pre-season starts. "They are good players and fantastic professionals. Danny and Aaron are role models to younger players. "Aaron may not have got much playing time last season but his attitude and application and professionalism around the training ground was always first class. "Those players sometimes don't get the recognition but they were important."Follow @MR_LWMedia and @AdvertiserSport on Twitter for more Palace news.

Luis Suarez bite: Crystal Palace fans' reaction on Twitter

AFTER his tears on the pitch at Selhurst Park last month, Crystal Palace fans have been given a second chance to take a swipe at Luis Suarez. Eagles supporters took to Twitter after yesterday's alleged biting incident, where the Liverpool and Uruguay striker appeared to sink his teeth into Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini. And according to some Palace fans, the latest Suarez shame can be traced back to the famous night Tony Pulis' boys made the double player of the year cry. @Adma_R said: "No matter the England result last night, as it was my club #cpfc that made Suarez cry like a little girl. He can never take that from us!" And Stephen Ellis wrote: "Cheer up #cpfc England fans...he may be gloating but one thing Suarez can't take away from us is him crying in the middle of Selhurst Park!" Others were already looking forward to Suarez visiting SE25 next season. @uzworm said: "We're going to have to put Dwight Gayle in a full-body Kevlar suit when #cpfc play #lfc next year, aren't we?" And @JamesCPFC Tweeted: "Suarez wouldn't have any teeth yet if he bit Jedinak next season #cpfc" This is the third time in his career Suarez has been accused of biting an opponent. In 2010, he was banned for seven games for biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal's shoulder while playing for Ajax. Then, last year, he got a 10-game ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.

Luis Suarez bite: Why we all need to calm the hell down

$

ADVERTISER editor GLENN EBREY on why Luis Suarez's biting habit is bad... but not that bad... NOW, as the football lexicon demands, let me begin by saying that no one condones biting. And yes, Luis Suarez should be banned from football. And, yes, it should probably be for a pretty long time. And yes, sticking your not too inconsiderable gnashers into a member of the opposition is, as Lionel Ritchie would say, once, twice, three times unacceptable. But almost as bad is the inevitable stream of self-righteous nonsense in response to Luis Lecter's latest transgression, led inevitably by the angry man from angry-ville football phone-in brigade. "Ban him for life," "I wouldn't want him at my club," "I'd rather he broke someone's leg than bite them," – some of the inevitably ridiculous, reactionary opinions floating around social media in the hours since the incident. The English footballing fraternity are an admirably moral bunch in a pretty amoral sport. We're the ones who expose Fifa corruption, we won't stoop to cheating and diving to win a game, and we hate those pesky foreigners bringing their spitting and biting into our league. Generally, this attitude is one we should be proud of but occasionally it slips into a terrible sort of Little Englander attitude to the World game, that spitting (though disgusting) is somehow a hanging offence and, as for biting an opponent, well, I'd rather you gave me a good honest chinning. Similarly pompous is this "I wouldn't want him at my club line." If you really, honestly hold that opinion then it's very admirable. But would Liverpool want to get rid of Suarez after this incident? Of course they won't. Will Real Madrid and Barcelona still be lining up to buy one of the world's great players? Of course they will. A Palace fans' forum last night ran a thread titled: 'Would you take Suarez at Palace?' Would any fan, in their right man, answer no to that question? Would you really, given half a chance, say 'Thanks Luis but we'd rather stick with Cameron Jerome?' Biting is bad. But it isn't that bad. Luis Suarez hasn't ended anyone's career, he just needs a combination of punishment and professional help to stop him carrying out a bizarre yet hardly life-threatening bodily function. I'd take Luis Suarez at my club tomorrow. Maybe that makes me all that's wrong with modern football. Or maybe it just makes me a football fan.

TWO people have denied murdering South Norwood father Michael Hunt. Arry James Green, 21, of no fixed abode, and Fiona Nalty, 24, of Fairdene Road, Coulsdon, pleaded not guilty to murder when they appeared via videolink before the Old Bailey this morning (Wednesday). Mr Hunt was found dying in a skip off Station Road in South Norwood on March 15, and died in hospital hours later. The two accused have been remanded in custody for a trial due to begin on September 15. Mr Hunt, originally from Waterford, in Ireland and known locally as 'Irish Mick', lived with his mother in Holmesdale Road. In a statement released after his death, Mr Hunt's family described him as "a kind, gentle natured spirit, always happy-go-lucky with a dry sense of humour." A postmortem examination gave the cause of his death as a blunt trauma to the head and torso.

Croydon residents can dob in fly-tippers by calling new hotline

A HOTLINE which residents can use to dob in fly-tippers will be launched by the council on Monday (June 30). It is part of the new Labour administration's Don't Mess with Croydon campaign, launched after it made cleaner streets and tougher action against fly-tippers a key plank of its election manifesto. The dedicated hotline and e-mail address will complement the existing smartphone app, MyCroydon. Residents who want to get actively involved in the campaign will also be encouraged to become 'community champions' and will be supported by Croydon's street cleaning contractors, Veolia, to carry out a series of community pride clean-ups. Council staff and contractors, regardless of their job titles, will be asked to act as additional eyes and ears and will be given the means of quickly logging any problems they see while out on their normal duties. The new hotline number, 020 8604 7000, becomes active on Monday and this, along with the email address flytipping@croydon.gov.uk, can be used to report fly-tips and provide information about who caused them. The council says the information will be used to issue fines or seek court action against the perpetrators. Councillor Stuart Collins, cabinet member for a cleaner and greener Croydon, said: "The volume of calls shows interest in reporting fly-tipping has been sky-rocketing recently and we want to capitalise on this to keep the reports coming in. Over just the last few weeks we've had approaching 1,500 reported incidents from across the borough. This is great, because the sooner we hear about a problem, the sooner we can investigate who might have been to blame, issue fines, and get it cleared up. "These calls show how much pride people already have in Croydon – again, this is a brilliant starting point and we'll be doing everything possible to keep up the momentum. "Of course the flip side of this is the picture it paints of the scale of the problem. In the long-term we have to stop people dumping rubbish in the first place. We'll be making it increasingly easy for people to get rid of their waste in the proper way - and for those who don't they can look forward to a significant cash fine or a court prosecution, and quite likely being publicly named and shamed."

CRYSTAL Palace boss Tony Pulis says his players will be asked serious questions about their fitness as they head to Austria before embarking on the club's tour of the United States. "We're pleased with the tour," he told the Advertiser. "We'll do most of our pre-season away from England this year. "I have been away before with Stoke and it is hard for the players. "The humidity, they are very difficult conditions to play in. "Fitness-wise though, it doesn't half help them. The altitude training will be in Austria. "Then America, we go over there for three games which will be played in humidity, not over 90 per cent humidity though. "The players will really, really be asked questions about their fitness levels."
