REVELLERS smashed up the former Royal Mail delivery office in East Croydon during an illegal rave. Thousands of people descended on the venue from around 9pm yesterday (Saturday) evening. Missiles, including fire extinguishers and furniture, were reportedly thrown at police when they initially tried to shut the event down. Nine people were arrested and six others were taken to hospital. Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell criticised those responsible for the rave and the damage, saying they should "feel the full force of the law". Council leader Tony Newman said: "Thankfully unlicensed raves are very rare in our borough and we will be working with our partners to make sure such a situation does not happen here again." At around 11pm the police, who had called in extra resources from across London, decided to let the rave continue to avoid further trouble. The event went on into the early hours and saw some partygoers cause extensive damage to the building. Officers eventually moved in and have now cordoned off the site and have led people out of the depot. The scene from outside shows dozens of smashed windows, glass over the pavement and even fire extinguishers littering the floor. Trams are not currently running through East Croydon station, which is opposite the building. A security firm is on site attempting to secure the depot. Writing on his blog, Mr Barwell said that police found around 200 people inside, and further 300 outside, when first called to the building at 9pm. He added: "There appeared to be only one entry and exit point to the venue raising serious concerns about the health and safety of those inside if there was a fire or other emergency. "As police sought to secure the building in an attempt to prevent further attendance, the crowd outside rapidly swelled to excess of 1,000. "At this point additional police resources were requested from across London. "Within 30 minutes the crowd had doubled and was increasing further with every train that arrived at East Croydon station. "Officers became the the focal point of the crowd's frustration and missiles began to be thrown at the police. "This then escalated to fire extinguishers and furniture being thrown from the building at the officers below." At 11pm the decision was taken "turn the building over to the crowd", said Mr Barwell. "It was evident that the officers on scene were at risk of serious injury and there was a distinct risk of the crowd moving into a very busy Croydon town centre with the possibility of serious public disorder. "Instructions were given for all officers to withdraw from the building, but to maintain a watching brief to coordinate with London Fire Brigade and ambulance service should the need to enter the building arise due to serious injury or fire. "Individuals continued to sporadically smash windows and throw items down onto the pavement, including masonry and more fire extinguishers. Cllr Newman said: "Thanks to the efforts of the police there were no serious injuries to contend with. "We have begun a full clear-up operation of the area and surveyors have been brought in to help make the building safe and secure. We will also be discussing responsibility for security of the site with the Royal Mail." The delivery depot closed earlier this year to make way for flats and was relocated to Factory Lane. It is understood the building had been occupied by squatters this week. In April, an illegal rave in a warehouse in Bath House Road, just across the border in Sutton, attracted a crowd of more than 3,000 people.

POLICE arrested nine people - and at least four others were taken to hospital - during the illegal rave in East Croydon. Thousands of people attended the event at the former Royal Mail delivery office in Cherry Orchard Road last night (Saturday). Missiles were thrown at the police - including fire extinguishers - and a police vehicle was damaged. Two people were detained for violent disorder and a further seven arrests were made for various other offences, including drugs and money laundering. The Metropolitan Police said it is treating the area as a crime scene and expects to make further arrests in the coming days. London Ambulance Service said paramedics had taken seven people to hospital, one for a head injury, another for a hand injury and others who had been taken unwell. Police on a routine patrol noticed large numbers of people inside the building at around 9.40pm. A spokesman said: "Additional officers were called and cordons were implemented to prevent further people from gaining access to the building and surrounding area. "A number of people in the crowd became violent and missiles were thrown. The window of a police vehicle was smashed." At that point two people were arrested for violent disorder. They remain in custody at a south London police station. Police then allowed the event to continue but remained at the scene to prevent "dangerously large" numbers of people from entering the delivery office. The premises suffered extensive damage during the rave, with more than a dozen windows broken and furniture and fire extinguishers thrown from the building. At around 8.30am, police entered and began to clear the venue. The cordon was kept in place this morning as the property was secured. Tram services through East Croydon were delayed as a result. Inspector Dave Sutton of Croydon police said: "Although the decision was taken to allow the event to continue while preventing further large numbers of people from gaining entry, police in Croydon will not tolerate violent disorder in any form. "Anyone involved in the supply of illegal drugs, or who put themselves, police officers and members of the public in danger through acts of violence or criminal damage, should be aware that an extensive investigation has begun to identify, arrest and bring before the courts those who committed offences." Note: Police initially said six people had been taken to hospital but then revised that figure down to four. London Ambulance Service said this afternoon that seven people had been hospitalised.

Firefighters called to derelict Sea Cadets building evening before death of Sylvester Menzelevski, court hears

FIREFIGHTERS raised concerns about the fire risk at a derelict building the evening before a man died during a blaze there, a court heard. Croydon firefighters were called to a small fire at the former Sea Cadets building in Davenant Road the evening before the death of Sylvester Menzelevski, and immediately flagged the building as a danger, Croydon Crown Court head this week. Two teenagers are standing trial on manslaughter and arson charges following the blaze and discovery of the 35-year-old's body at about 3pm on June 10 last year. Giving evidence on Friday, London Fire Brigade investigator Mark Ross said the "local fire station" had been called to some rubbish alight behind the building at about 7pm on June 9, which the watch manager concluded had been deliberately set alight. He said the watch manager had also seen a pile of tires inside the dilapidated building and was worried about someone returning and setting fire to them. Mr Ross added: "If ignited they are going to cause a significant fire with a lot of smoke and potentially a lot of damage. "It was also was a hazard for firefighters: a dangerous, derelict building full of unknowns. "So from a fire safety point of view he wants to prevent that happening, so when he returned to the station he did in fact put in a report to the station manager with his concerns." Asked by defence lawyer Miranda Moore QC whether Mr Moss deemed the building "an accident waiting to happen" he replied "Absolutely," before saying "not an accident" and accepting "incident" as a better description. She added: "It was a problem that needed dealing with?" "Definitely," he replied. Mr Ross said he thought the fire after which Mr Menzelevski was found dead had started with the tire stack and its most likely cause was the "deliberate application of a naked flame." Asked whether he had been made aware that firefighters had met people living in the derelict house the evening before, he said he had not. Jurors had earlier been read written evidence from firefighters who attended the fire and found Mr Menzelevski's body. Mr Moss added: "[There is] no doubt the fire was burning when he collapsed because he collapsed on top of soot deposition." The accused teenagers cannot be named due to their age. Both deny the charges. The trial continues.

Deputy mayor of Croydon's first appointments included launching carer's week for her husband

THE last thing new deputy mayor of Croydon, Patricia Hay-Justice could have dreamt of was for her first official duty to emanate from a request from her husband.

This is just what happened when on Monday Councillor Hay-Justice found herself launching Carers' Week at the Carers Support Centre in George Street, Croydon.

Cllr Hay-Justice said: "It was a bizarre situation. During my first meeting with the Mayoral team we begun to review those appointments that Madam Mayor was unable to accept.

"The first letter was from Mark Justice of Croydon Neighbourhood Care Association. I was aghast and exclaimed that as much I support the cause, I could not carry out that appointment."

When she was asked to explain why, she pointed out that the request came from her husband.

But any potential problems were defused by the Mayor's staff who explained the request came in January, before anyone knew the outcome of last month's elections and who the Mayor and deputy mayor would be.

THE former Royal Mail delivery office in East Croydon has been boarded up following an illegal rave. The building, in Cherry Orchard Road, was smashed up when thousands of people attended the event on Saturday night. Windows were broken and revellers threw fire extinguishers, furniture and masonry at police when officers tried to shut the event down. They eventually allowed the rave to continue before clearing the building on Sunday morning. The delivery office, which closed earlier this year, has now been boarded up. Police were still at the scene on Monday morning. Council leader Tony Newman and Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell condemned the event, with the latter saying those responsible for the damage "should feel the full force of the law". Nine people were arrested for various offences, including violent disorder and money laundering. Police are treating the area as a crime scene and expect to make more arrests. Seven people were taken to hospital, one with a head injury and others who were taken ill. Tram and bus services were disrupted while the site was secured. Mr Barwell said: "It is clearly unacceptable to have a situation where people are allowed to occupy a building, disrupt the whole public transport system and keep a lot of the people that live in the area up all night," the Conservative MP said. "I'm all for people having a good time but it has to be in a safe environment." The council said it is in discussions with Royal Mail over the security of the site.

CRYSTAL Palace chairman Steve Parish has admitted that Costa Rica striker Joel Campbell has been on the club's radar for a while. The Arsenal striker, who was on loan at Olympiakos last year, impressed in his country's 3-1 win against Uruguay at the World Cup on Saturday, netting the equaliser and setting up the third goal. His performance led to praise from several pundits and fans on social media, while former Palace striker Clinton Morrison tweeted Parish to say that Campbell would be worth a look at for the Eagles, if Arsenal want to loan him out again. And in response, Parish tweeted: "Our Chief Scout Tim Coe been banging on about him for 3 months to be fair." However, national media reports suggest that the 21-year-old is likely to be given a chance to prove himself at Arsenal in pre-season, rather than being sent on loan again.

A CRYSTAL Girl is hoping to be crowned Miss England at the competition's finals today. Neesha Robinson, 21, is up against a bevvie of 60 beauties at the contest in Torquay which ends tonight. She qualified for the competition with victory in the inaugural Miss Afro Beauty and could bring back the title to Selhurst Park for next season. The cheerleader, of Warlingham, has been competing over the weekend and modelled evening wear at last night's Mr World competition. She is up against her pom-pom-toting colleague Kim Fletcher who qualified as Miss Chichester. Neesha recently graduated as a media, dance and cultural studies student from Kingston University, Neesha is hoping her charity work could give her the edge. She was made a chairperson for the Royal National Children's Foundation (RNCF) in April and met Princess Anne at its annual conference. The dancer will be travelling to the USA immediately after the competition to teach dance to American children. But she said she would ultimately like to incorporate all her background in media, culture and sport to work in government and help people internationally. She has been fundraising for seven years for the RNCF – a charity helping young people who have suffered human tragedy or neglect in their lives. Over the weekend, the contestants have been undergoing a series of challenges including displaying their special talent. Perhaps predictably, the Brainy Beauty competition is currently being led by Miss Oxfordshire.

Reward for have-a-go heroes as bank robber given life sentence

TWO have-a-go heroes who caught an armed robber as he tried to stick up a bank will be given a cash reward, a judge has ordered. Window cleaners James Rowley and Daniel Sandholm will each be paid £1,200 from the Sheriff's Fund for their "bravery" in stopping Andrew Fernandez from robbing Lloyds Bank in Brighton Road, Coulsdon, last November, and holding him nearby until police arrived. This afternoon Fernandez, 47, of no fixed abode, was jailed for life with a minimum term of eight years, after admitting trying to rob the Coulsdon bank and robbing two other Lloyds Bank branches elsewhere last year. On each occasion he used a plastic imitation gun as a pretend weapon and a pedal bicycle as his getaway vehicle. Sentencing him at Kingston Crown Court, Judge Fergus Mitchell stressed the harm he had done to people he had terrified during his attacks, including staff fearful of returning to work. Praising Mr Rowley, 34, of Caterham, and Mr Sandholm, 23, of Purley, he said: "They both contributed in their different ways and I am going to make an award for their courage in relation to their bravery. "[...] It's pretty impressive behaviour on both their parts in detaining this man." The court had heard how Fernandez robbed Lloyds Bank in Mill Hill of £5,429 on July 12 after walking in at around 11.45am, brandishing his plastic hand gun and demanding a cashier hand over the money. He repeated the pattern on September 27 at Lloyds in Watford, Hertfordshire, when he walked in at around 9.45am, demanded cash, and was handed £4,038 before he left and got away on his bicycle. But when he tried to do the same at the Brighton Road branch on November 27 last year, he was confronted by Mr Rowley, who had popped in to deposit some money after work. Prosecuting, Nathan Rasiah told the court: "The customer on this occasion was Mr Rowley, who responded by saying, 'Look, you p****, why don't you just f*** off.' "He [Fernandez] responded by saying, 'I am going to start shooting, I will start shooting through the glass'." Mr Rasiah continued: "The customer persisted by saying, 'F*** off you p****, it is a fake gun anyway, it is plastic'." Fernandez, the court heard, then left the shop shouting as if for back up, before running off and getting onto his bike. But he was chased by Mr Rowley, who threw a fire extinguisher at him, toppling him off the bike. Fernandez then hit Mr Rowley over the head with his crash helmet and ran off, at which point Mr Sandholm, waiting for Mr Rowley in a parked van, ran after and grabbed hold of the robber. Police arrived shortly afterwards and arrested Fernandez, who initially told them he had been attacked and was suffering memory loss. But on April 3 this year he was charged with all three incidents, after police found CCTV and witness evidence. He pleaded guilty on May 19 to one count of attempted robbery, two counts of robbery, and three counts of possessing an imitation firearm. Mr Fernandez had previously been convicted of robbery in 1986 and 1995. Mitigating, Michael Hillman told the court his client had turned his life around since those convictions but then relapsed into crime to feed a cocaine addiction. He said: "It is clear that he really turned his life around in 1999, gained excellent qualifications, building up an excellent business, doing very well. "He started experimenting recreationally with cocaine that unfortunately has resulted in an addiction which has spiralled out of all control and caused him to go back to the sort of offences which he was committing when he was much younger." Judge Mitchell said Mr Fernandez clearly had a supportive family, telling him: "It is just a great regret really that you have so let them down in the way that you have been involving yourself in what are very serious offences. "And the really serious aspect of these offences is what happened to those people who were involved." Reading from statements given by witnesses, he told of one who was "terribly upset and frightened" and "anxious about resuming my role". And a cashier who had been the victim of six robberies before Mr Fernandez told the judge: "The people who do this don't understand what pain they cause." She added: "I am trying to put a brave face on but as soon as anyone asks me what happened I start crying." Speaking after the sentencing, Mr Rowley told the Advertiser he was "a bit shocked" to find the man he confronted had such a chequered past. He added he was "really happy" at the financial reward given by the judge, and pleased at the tough sentence.

High Court grants campaigners permission for judicial review of incinerator decision

A HIGH court judge has granted permission for a judicial review of plans for an incinerator on the border of Croydon and Sutton. Judge Justice Collins ruled that the case made by campaigners is "arguable", adding that there was a potential conflict of interest between Sutton Council and developers Viridor. The case will now be heard in full later this year. Shasha Khan challenged last year's decision to approve plans for the Beddington Lane plant on the basis that Sutton applied the wrong planning policy and the authority was "unduly influenced by their contractual relationship with Viridor". The incinerator is backed by the South London Waste Partnership, which comprises Croydon, Sutton, Kingston and Merton councils. It would replace an existing landfill site and would burn around 275,000 tonnes of rubbish a year to create energy. The Stop the Incinerator Campaign argues that it presents a serious health risk. The incinerator was given planning permission by Sutton Council - a decision later ratified by the Mayor of London - despite the site being on protected Metropolitan Open Land. Judge Justice Collins made his ruling at the High Court on Friday. Mr Khan said: "I am so grateful for the hundreds of small donations to finance this case from members of the public like me who want parks for their kids, not waste incinerators. "In World Cup terms, a tricky qualification has been achieved and now we all look forward to the finals." Sue Willman, from Deighton Pierce Glynn, representing Mr Khan, said: "Despite powerful opposition by council and developers, a senior planning court judge has recognised the strength of the case not to grant permission to burn waste on a site which is a haven for wildlife and migrating birds." Mr Khan, a prominent member of Croydon Green Party, has taken sole responsibility for the legal challenge, which could cost up to £35,000. Croydon Labour Party, which last month retook control of Croydon Council, is opposed to the incinerator. Stuart Collins, cabinet member for Clean Green Croydon, said the council would be following the judicial review closely. He added: "We need to wait to see what happens and then, if the case is won, that will be the time to talk about alternative technologies. "If the case is lost then our main concern is to look at the strictest health and safety monitoring on that site." Sutton Council and Viridor have yet to comment on the ruling.

COMMUTERS could be in for a long journey home to Croydon this evening after a suspected gas leak in Battersea. London Fire Brigade tweeted it had put a hazard zone in place near Battersea Park station after a gas cylinder was ruptured on Kirtling Street. Southern Rail services will be affected until further notice through East Croydon as a result, with delays expected. There was confusion earlier after police said they were investigating an unexploded Second World War bomb in the grounds of Battersea Power Station. However, it now appears the source of the disruption is the gas leak.

A SHIRLEY teenager has been jailed for 15 years for stabbing a man - who ended up losing all his limbs - in a row over a mobile phone. Dominic Brookes, 19, of Bramble Close, was sentenced today along with three other men for the attack in Worthing on the then 25-year-old Ernest Moyo. Mr Moyo was attacked as he left a party on August 11, 2012, by Brookes, Trey Johnson, 18, of Victoria Road in Worthing, Patrick Brookes, 27, of Clifton Road, Worthing, and Jeremiah Reynolds, 26, of Ascham End, north London. Mr Moyo, known as Joe, had been in an altercation with another group earlier in the night but left before returning with friends. A fight ensued with the four convicted men and Mr Moyo was stabbed in the leg and stomach before he was left in the road. Three stab wounds, one to his thigh and two to his abdomen, left Mr Moyo fighting for his life when infection spread. Doctors took the decision to amputate all of his limbs after his vital organs were put in danger. Mr Moyo's family said he had such little recollection of the incident they had initially told him he had been in a car crash. Dominic Brookes was arrested nine days later along with Johnson and Reynolds and were all charged with grievous bodily harm with intent on August 22, 2012. Patrick Brookes was arrested on the night of the incident and charged with the same offence the following day. All pleaded not guilty, claiming they were not involved in the stabbing. Patrick Brookes and Reynolds were found guilty on March 11 this year after a three week retrial at Hove Crown Court and jailed for 16 years and 15 years respectively. Shirley student Dominic Brookes and Johnson were found guilty at Hove Crown Court last August and both sentenced to 15 years today. They were told they would begin their sentences in a Young Offenders' Institute. Mr Moyo's fiancé Amy said in a statement released by Sussex Police after the sentencing: "For two to three months every day both our families visited him hoping and praying, before finally he was taken off the life support. "Joe and myself will have to deal with his injuries every day for the rest of our lives as we make a future together, making our lives totally different from what they would have been. "We would all like to thank all the nurses, doctors and surgeons at the hospitals for all their care and support that they gave to Joe. "We are relieved that four people have now been held accountable for their actions and will now face many years in prison." Detective Constable Laura Sinden, of Sussex Police, said: "I have been with Joe and his family throughout the investigation and the trial and am pleased for them that these four people have been brought to justice. "Each of the men have received significant sentences for their involvement in what happened that night. "The attack happened after a row about a mobile phone and escalated into a young man almost losing his life. "The injuries Joe sustained from the stab wounds have meant he had to have his limbs amputated and therefore the consequences of that night will be with him for the rest of his life. "This was a vicious attack that left Joe fighting for his life in the middle of the road. We have worked hard, and with the support of Joe's family, to bring these men to justice."

Investigation underway after police admit they knew about illegal rave in Croydon more than a week before it happened

POlICE were told there would be a rave at the Royal Mail depot in East Croydon more than a week before it happened. The Met received intelligence on June 5 that there would be an event at the former delivery office, in Cherry Orchard Road, on Saturday (June 14). An internal investigation is underway after the information was reviewed by an intelligence officer but no further action was taken. A 15-year-old boy who attended the rave died in hospital today (Monday). Police believe he drank from a bottle of beer which contained ketamine, the Advertiser understands. Thousands of people attended the rave after receiving an email on the day containing mobile phone numbers to call in order to find out the location. Publicly, police have said they first became aware of the rave at 9.40pm, when officers on a routine patrol noticed people in the building and crowds outside. Riot police were called but instead of stopping the event a cordon was put up and it was allowed to continue. The extent to which police were pre-warned of what was going to happen was discussed at an emergency meeting with the council and other agencies this afternoon. That 'gold group' meeting heard that police had information which said a rave was going to take place at the delivery office, which closed earlier this year. Royal Mail had also informed police the building had occupied by squatters in the week leading to the event. A Met spokesman told the Advertiser: "We received a single piece of intelligence that an event may take at the location. "The information was reviewed by a local intelligence officer, but not further action was taken. "We are now conducting an internal review into how this intelligence was handled." Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell said today: "If it is true that the police knew about it and didn't make sure they had sufficient resources in place to put a stop to it then it's a very serious matter." As huge numbers of revellers arrived via East Croydon station, riot officers were called in after police trying to shut the party down had objects thrown at them, including fire extinguishers.Video showing crowds throwing objects at police Officers then stepped back and allowed the rave to continue amid concern the disorder could spread. They remained at the scene, along with ambulance crews, and then moved in at around 8.30am to clear and secure the building, which suffered extensive damage, including dozens of broken windows. In January, Croydon student Daniel Spargo-Mabbs, 16, died after taking ecstasy during an illegal rave in west London. In April, a rave in a warehouse in Bath House Road, just across the border in Sutton, attracted a crowd of more than 3,000 people. So far 14 people have been arrested for various offences as part of a major investigation into the disorder on Saturday, five of whom were arrested today and remain in police custody. Two people were charged an appeared at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court via video link today.

A 15-YEAR-OLD suspected to have drank a beer laced with the drug ketamine while at an illegal rave in East Croydon has died. The teenager, believed to be from west London, died in hospital this afternoon after falling ill during the event at the former Royal Mail delivery office in Cherry Orchard Road, on Saturday night. Police believe he drank from a bottle of beer they think contained ketamine, an illegal party drug. A 19-year-old is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after drinking from the same bottle, the Advertiser understands. It is also understood that several other people who attended the event were also taken ill after drinking the same 'cocktail'. Police believe they know the identity of the boy who passed away but are awaiting formal identification. A post mortem is be held in due course. Six other people were taken to hospital after suffering injuries during the rave. They have since been discharged. Police and council officials held an emergency 'gold group' meeting about the situation earlier this afternoon (Monday). Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell, who has strongly criticised organisers of the event, said: "My thoughts are with this boy's family at their tragic and unnecessary loss. "Yesterday I said that the organisers of this event, which has caused so much damage and disruption, should face the full force of the law. "In the light of this tragic news I stand by that statement and will do all in my power to make sure that it happens." Thousands of revellers descended on East Croydon for the rave, which began at 9pm. Riot police were called after officers trying to shut down the event had missiles thrown at them, including fire extinguishers, by some people in the crowd. The police then stepped back and allowed the rave to continue amid concern the disorder could spread out of their control. Fourteen people have been arrested for various offences. Two people have so far been charged, one with violent disorder, assault on a police officer and possession of class B drugs, and the second with violent disorder and possession of class A drugs. They were due to appear at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court today.

A VIDEO shows a crowd throwing objects at police officers trying to shut down Saturday's illegal rave in East Croydon. The clip, uploaded to YouTube, shows police officers in riot gear - including helmets and shields - being cornered outside the former Royal Mail delivery office in Cherry Orchard Road. Recorded during the police's initial attempt to shut the rave down, the video shows a large group of people becoming increasingly restless. Some can be seen to throw things at the police before the 20 or so officers retreat, prompting some within the crowd to cheer. The Metropolitan Police say furniture and fire extinguishers were among the objects thrown at officers from the building. A police vehicle was damaged. After allowing the event to continue, police cordoned off the area to prevent the disorder spreading, before moving in to clear the building at 8.30am. A 15-year-old boy died in hospital today after falling ill during the rave. It is understood he drank from a bottle of beer that contained ketamine. CRYSTAL Palace are moving closer to a £1.5m deal for Russian midfielder Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, according to reports. The 29-year-old previously spent two-and-a-half years at Everton and has been linked with a move back to England, having spent the second half of last season on loan at Anzhi Makhachkala from Spartak Moscow. Several Premier League clubs are said to be interested in a deal for Bilyaletdinov, who did not make the Russian World Cup squad, but reports in Russia suggest that Palace are in pole position. Meanwhile, Tom Ince is reportedly on the verge of joining Premier League new boys Queens Park Rangers, according to reports. Ince spent the second half of last season on loan at Palace, but having been linked with Inter Milan, Hull City and Stoke City, the Daily Mail is reporting that Ince could join up with Harry Redknapp at Loftus Road.
