Crystal Palace star Julian Speroni misses out on Argentina World Cup call

CRYSTAL Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni has not received a call-up for Argentina's World Cup squad. Manager Alejandro Sabella has named a 30-man provisional squad for Brazil next month, and despite wide calls for Speroni to be involved, he has not been selected. Instead, Sergio Romero, Mariano Andujar and Agustin Orion are the three custodians going. It is a big shame for Speroni, who has performed superbly week in, week out playing in the Premier League this season, while the likes of Romero and Andujar have struggled for first team places at their clubs. Speroni told the Advertiser in March that back home in Argentina, fans were likely to demand at least one of the goalkeepers going to the World Cup came from a side in the country, and this has gone to Boca Juniors stopper Orion. Speroni, who turns 35-years-old this Sunday, is now set to meet Tony Pulis about his future at Palace. And should they fail to come to an agreement, Speroni will be off, with a number of clubs in England and abroad keen to snap him up. Palace officials are, however, eager to offer him a new deal depending on talks with Pulis. It is understood co-chairman Steve Parish would like to keep Speroni involved at Selhurst Park after he eventually retires from the game too.

Crystal Palace set to decide on season ticket cut-off point after impressive sales

CRYSTAL Palace are set to decide on a cut-off point after impressive season ticket sales have reached 15,000. Co-chairman Stephen Browett is urging supporters to be quick as Premier League football returns to SE25 for another season. And he believes that only another 2,000 will be available to fans before match-by-match sales come into effect. "So far we have sold more than 14,750," Browett told the Advertiser. "The final, final figure for this season was 15,600, so we're around 800 behind and we've got three months still to go. "The biggest question now is to hurry up but we as a club have to have a limit. What we're thinking is, at around 17,000 sales, we're going to have to stop it because we can't sell any more. "If you don't stop it, you don't have any tickets left for casual sales. "We will keep the same allocation area for away sides too. You have to give away teams 10 per cent, so we give every away team exactly 2,600 tickets. "And we haven't made an exception to that, even if there is massive demand, we have not allowed any away team more than the actual minimum."

CHIEF Scout and international adventurer Bear Grylls inspired youngsters last weekend when he dropped in at a camp in Shirley. He visited the Pinewood Scout Activity Centre in Shirley Church Road as part of a tour across London and the South East urging to inspire more adult to volunteer for Scouting. Across the country there are 40,000 youngsters on Scouting waiting lists because of a lack of volunteer helpers. At the centre He met and spoke to Scouts and volunteers taking part in a survival activity camp. Commenting on his visit to Pinewood, he said: "I met a lot of inspiring young people who play a positive part in the adventure that Scouting provides. "One of my main objectives for the weekend was to encourage more adults to volunteer with the Scouts to ensure that all young people have the opportunity to join in the adventure that Scouting offers to all its participants. Lilee Hardy-Sin, a 13-year-old Scout from Croydon, said: "It was great to meet Bear in person instead of just watching him on TV. "I love being a Scout – it's built up my confidence, helped me make loads of new friends and allowed me to try so many brilliant things I would have otherwise never been able to do." Steve French, the volunteer Scouting manager for Croydon Scouts, added: "Volunteering as a Scout Leader is easily one of the best things I've ever done. "There's nothing more fulfilling than helping young people get the most out of life. "Volunteering with the Scouts has provided me with an opportunity to give something back to the community, while developing lots of transferable skills that I can use in other areas of my life."

A BURGLAR from Croydon has been jailed for four years after police linked blood left at the crime scene to him. Charles Bob Jernigan, 28, unemployed, was sentenced on May 1 after pleading guilty to a burglary in West Croydon on April 1. The victim, a man in his fifties, returned to his address when he noticed the window of his property was broken and subsequently noticed watches and cash missing. Forensic officers found blood marks on the front door and an unusual ring on the floor which did not belong to the victim. Forensic investigation and local enquiries linked Jernigan, of Lodge Road, to the scene and he attended Croydon police station voluntarily on April 16, where he was arrested for burglary. After sustaining he did not know the victim's address and was not responsible for the burglary, he pleaded guilty on May 1 after being presented with forensic evidence linking him to the scene. DS James Pitman, the officer in charge of the squad, said: "I am really pleased with the result of this investigation and that Jernigan pleaded guilty. "We will pursue anyone committing burglary and will make sure that they are brought before a court."

Ten reasons why supporting Crystal Palace is great

AFTER a season to remember, Advertiser reporter, ardent Eagles fan and Thomas Brolin appreciator ANDREW JAMESON gives his 10 reasons why following Palace is blooming great at present...1. The obvious one – we are staying up. The club will face its second successive season in the top flight for the first time Rupert Murdoch decided to change football in 1992.2. Tony Pulis: All the superlatives about the baseball-capped Welsh maestro have been used up in the last few days. So let's just say how some (including me) were so absolutely, cataclysmically wrong to sniff at the prospect of him replacing Ian Holloway.3. Selhurst Park: The prospect of our ground's redevelopment now looks an immediate possibility. Pulis spoke after the Liverpool game of upgrading every part of the club and Palace's tired old home in SE25 must be a priority.4. Playing squad: A team that was beginning to look decidedly ropey and flabby (in squad size) towards the end of Ian Holloway's reign was trimmed by Pulis and subsequently beefed up in January. He has instilled balance and tapped into the potential of players like Damien Delaney, Jason Puncheon and Yannick Bolasie. Top work, Tone.5. Owners: The best thing you can say about Steve, Steve, Martin and Jeremy is that at every single transitional point since they took over four years ago, they have absolutely nailed it. They have appointed well, backed managers at the right time, driven the club incessantly forward and left us looking up, not down.6. Sexy new kits: Steve Parish explained the creative process behind our new Macron kits at the Player of the Year do at Fairfield Halls on Tuesday, and, by gosh, they're some lovely little numbers. Start dieting now to look like Mile Jedinak by August.7. Lovely pies: The chefs at Selhurst must have been on a training course because the steak and ales in the Holmesdale are a revelation.8. The Crystal Girls: Who doesn't love The Crystals?9. Cracking season: Even though it didn't look in doubt in the end, there was still a real possibility until weeks ago we could have been nudged into the relegation spots. And would we have cared? Well, yes, but we still would have taken a lot from our season at the top table. 10. Fans: The Premier League's other clubs (save for maybe Liverpool) and the media can't get enough of our supporters at the minute, and quite right too. Even Mourinho has (sort of) professed his undying love for us. You've been flipping fantastic from start to finish. Why do you love supporting Palace? Tell us your reasons below

Steve Parish: We all want Julian Speroni to stay at Crystal Palace

CRYSTAL Palace co-chairman Steve Parish says he wants to keep Julian Speroni but it may depend on talks held between the custodian and manager Tony Pulis. The Player of the Year's contract runs out next month and has been offered deals elsewhere. The Argentine goalkeeper has been with the Eagles for a decade and the club's supporters are desperate for him to stay. However, Parish doesn't expect any contract talks to commence this week. "There is no date set but I think everyone wants a little break," Parish told the Advertiser. "Tony is going to have a chat with Julian and talk to him about where he sees him and how he sees it going forward. "We would all like to keep Julian at the club, of course we would. It's looking for a long-term plan as well." The co-chairman shares the views of the supporters in wanting to see Speroni at the club in the future, saying he is "a massive part of the fabric". "I think we would like to see Julian really staying at the club and having a future, maybe on the coaching side," Parish added. "He's a massive part of the fabric of Palace. "Right now Julian wants to play and so he should, he's a fantastic keeper and a brilliant servant for the club. "He needs to sit down with Tony in the first instance and then I'm sure I'll get involved from there."

Coloma Trust confirms talks over 'Archbishop Lanfranc Academy' sponsorship

COLOMA Convent Girls' School has confirmed it is in talks to sponsor Archbishop Lanfranc when it becomes an academy. The Coloma Trust declined to comment when the Advertiser first reported there had been discussions between the two schools in March. However, the trust announced today (Wednesday) it had been invited by the Department for Education (DfE) to work with Archbishop Lanfranc. The DfE had been searching for a sponsor for the school, in Mitcham Road, since it was placed in special measures by Ofsted in October last year, after poor exam results which saw just 41 per cent of students reach the minimum requirements in their GCSEs. Coloma, in Shirley, is one of the borough's most popular schools and topped the exam league tables last summer. It would be the second time the trust has worked with a struggling secondary school, having taken over Selsdon High, now called Quest Academy, in September 2009. In the years since, the number of pupils reaching the government's GCSE benchmark increased from 23 per cent to 62 per cent. Coloma Trust said the new Archbishop Lanfranc Academy will be led by Quest vice principal, Michael del Rio, supported by Quest principal Andy Crofts. Maureen Martin, head teacher at Coloma, will oversee all three schools. Mrs Martin said: "The new Archbishop Lanfranc Academy will provide an opportunity for The Coloma Trust to extend its positive, life-changing reach to hundreds more Croydon school children. "The high standards and expectations that have brought Coloma students such success over the years, have proven to be transferable to other school environments. "We have seen it in the progress being made at The Quest Academy and we intend to see it again at Archbishop Lanfranc." Mrs Martin said the trust had "big plans" for Lanfranc, including a new sixth form to accompany the rebuild agreed by the government. Mr Crofts said: "I am looking forward to the challenges we will face at Archbishop Lanfranc and ensuring that all students benefit from the outstanding education offered by Coloma. "I have worked alongside Maureen and Michael for four years now and I am confident our joint expertise will lead Archbishop Lanfranc to future excellence." Mr del Rio said he was "thrilled" to have been offered the position of principal at the new academy. He added: "As vice principal of The Quest Academy for the last four years, I have been immersed in the values and principles that run through the Coloma Trust schools: love, responsibility, integrity, leadership and service. "It is a great privilege to have the opportunity to offer the same to a new group of students." Current Lanfranc head teacher David Clark was not available for comment.

Labour and Conservatives clash over council tax at Croydon Advertiser election debate

LEADERS of the two dominant political parties in Croydon traded blows over council tax at an election debate organised by the Advertiser. The Conservatives have made attacking Labour's history of council tax increases the focus of their campaign ahead of the local elections next Thursday (May 22). The row had been simmering for several weeks, but boiled over during our debate at Fairfield Halls on Tuesday night, when Labour leader Tony Newman attacked an "outrageous" front page wrap-around advert, taken out in another local paper, accusing his party of plotting a 27 per cent tax hike. Cllr Newman, who is trying to avoid a third straight election defeat, reiterated Labour's manifesto pledge to freeze council tax in 2016, before making a further promise. "If Labour is elected there would be no council tax increase above inflation - ever," he said, adding that - contrary to the Tory attack advert - any rise above 1.99 per cent would force the council to hold a referendum. Conservative council leader Mike Fisher called on voters to "judge people on what they do, not what they say". "I remember Tony's predecessor making the same promises before the 2002 election, a year later council tax went up 27 per cent. They more than doubled it in the 12 years they were in power. "If you're looking for council tax to be kept under control, there's only one way to vote." The two main parties in Croydon were joined on the panel by leading candidates from their three leading opponents - the Green Party, Ukip and the Liberal Democrats. Peter Staveley, branch chairman for Croydon Central and South, said Ukip have a "good chance" of a winning a seat because the council poll coincides with the European Elections. Mr Staveley told the audience of Advertiser readers, who had submitted questions to be put to the panel, that a Ukip council would "return control of Croydon town hall to local people". He said politics in Croydon had become "theatre", where councillors "shout at each other" and vote on party lines. In contrast Ukip councillors would "listen to residents and businesses and will vote accordingly". Answering a question about the lack of progress in London Road since the riots in August 2011, Tracey Hague, representing the Green Party, called for action. She said: "When will buildings demolished during riots be rebuilt? They are a scar on the face of the town reminding everyone [what happened] and meaning those who suffered cannot move on." Cllr Fisher, who was confronted by a resident who questioned his support for those who struggled to secure compensation following the disorder, said work to regenerate London Road would finally begin in August. "Perhaps it hasn't moved quickly enough but it is coming," he added. Mrs Hague, who is one of 70 candidates the Greens are standing in Croydon, said the party had a six-point plan to tackle fly-tipping, perhaps the biggest issue of the election campaign. Like Labour, the Green Party want to introduce a 24-hour hotline, but also increase opening hours at recycling centres and provide free collection of bulky waste for up to seven items a year, Mrs Hague said. The panellists - other than Cllr Fisher - described fly-tipping as an "epidemic" and attacked the Conservative council's record on both clearing the rubbish and prosecuting those responsible. Liberal Democrat John Jefkins, who repeatedly clashed with Cllr Fisher, blamed the problem on the council's adoption of a fortnightly black bin collection. "There are parts of the borough where it's not sensible because people haven't got the room outside their properties," he said. Both he and Mr Staveley said their parties would return to weekly collections. Cllr Newman stopped short of making an explicit promise, while Mrs Hague said the Greens would make the system "clearer" but would not reverse the decision. Cllr Fisher defended his party's record, citing a recently created app which allows residents to report fly-tipping and a £200,000 investment in CCTV cameras. The Labour leader followed up his attack by questioning his opposite number over the council's approach to affordable housing, describing as "risible" the 15 per cent target set for hundreds of homes being created by the £1 billion Westfield/Hammerson development. Cllr Fisher replied: "Tony knows, only too well, that if we had imposed a 30 per cent threshold on developments in Croydon, none of them would have taken place. We would have had no affordable housing in the last four years." He then announced that a Conservative administration would introduce a policy which meant people would have to have a "link" to Croydon for at least five years before being eligible for a council house. As the debate drew to a close, Advertiser editor Glenn Ebrey, who chaired the event, asked each candidate to sum up their party's platform. Mr Staveley said Ukip's would "allow local democracy to flourish" by adopting a policy that meant residents' petitions would trigger a referendum if they passed a certain number of signatures. The Lib Dems would bring greater scrutiny to the Town Hall, Mr Jefkins said. "We need more eyes watching these guys," he added. Mrs Hague chose to end her pitch by addressing the extraction of shale gas, or "fracking". "It will bring house prices, not energy prices, down," she said. Cllr Newman said a Labour council would be "transparent, would publish everything and end the culture of secrecy when it comes to council meetings". "Our day one priority," he added. "would be to absolutely clean up the borough." Cllr Fisher said: "If you are looking for efficiency and for council tax to be kept under control, there's only one way to vote in this election."For more on the debate and to see the Advertiser's alternative election guide, see this week's paper, out on Friday (May 16)

STEPHEN Browett had revealed his admiration for Palace's new home and away kits next season. Italian manufacturer Macron have come up with a stunning design and feel after signing a four-year deal with the Eagles a few months ago. And both kits were unveiled recently at the club's end-of-season awards night. "The quality of the kit, and I had a good feel of it at the awards night, with the little touches, I think Macron are very, very good," the Palace co-chairman tod the Advertiser. "The fans are delighted to have a red and blue home kit, and like a Brazil-type away kit, so everyone is really happy about it. "It just has that bit of class about it, and from what I've heard about the training kit, the casualwear and the stuff fans can buy in the club shop, will be classy stuff."

MANSFIELD Town want to sign Crystal Palace goalkeeper Lewis Price. The custodian has dropped down the pecking order considerably in the last few months, becoming fourth choice at the end of the season behind Julian Speroni, Wayne Hennessey and Neil Alexander. Price played five games on loan at Mansfield recently and their assistant boss Adam Murray is hoping to do a deal – if the stopper will drop down to League Two. Murray also wants to sign Darryl Westlake. "If it's doable, then we'd like to," Murray told the Nottingham Post. "It will come down to, first and foremost, if the boys want to come – obviously they're both from clubs higher up in the football pyramid, so they'll have the final decision. "But, yes, we're interested in bringing those boys back." A new contract has been offered to first choice Alan Marriott, while Ian Deakin has been released by the club, which could allow Price to compete directly with veteran Marriott. "With a smaller squad we will probably be looking at a couple of loans next year, so looking at the route again is a possibility," said Murray. "If Pricey wants to drop to this level and a deal can be done, then great. "You look at those two (Marriott and Price) as your two goalkeepers at the club – it would be a great little battle. "Alan's gone away and he's going to think about his future and where he sees things and what he wants to do. "Alan has had a lot of experience. He's 36 now, he's played a lot of football and is an excellent professional; and he's still in really good shape."

FORMER Crystal Palace captain Tony Popovic could make a return to the Championship this summer after two years in Australia. Norwich City are said to be interested in the 40-year-old, who featured 123 times for Palace between 2001 and 2006 and made 58 appearances for his home country Australia. His last spell in England was at Selhurst Park under Dougie Freedman, where the Scottish-born manager appointed him as the first team coach. He left the club in May 2012 to manage his current A-League club Western Sydney Wanders. Popovic has had a large amount of success since taking over the Sydney side, leading them to the A-league title in 2012/13 alongside the Premier's Plate before this season securing second place in the top-flight of Australian football. On Wednesday night he managed his side into the AFC Champions League quarter-finals. A number of managers have been linked with the vacant position at the club including the likes of Neil Lennon, Malky Mackay and Tim Sherwood. The recently relegated Premier League side are looking to return at the first time of asking.

Boris Johnson on the campaign trail in Croydon

UNASHAMEDLY on the election trail, Mayor of London, Boris Johnson breezed into Croydon on Wednesday. He started his trip visiting the new rail bridge over East Croydon before heading off to the Whitgift Centre and North End. His progress started with him surrounded by an entourage of Tory councillors and election candidates. But they soon found themselves taking a back seat as they were replaced by throngs of shoppers all eager to shake Boris's hand and be photographed alongside him. On more than one occasion council leader, Mike Fisher, forsook his electioneering duties to take pictures for Boris fans of all ages on their mobile phones. The Mayor obviously relishes the public attention and caused his minders a few heart flutters when they failed to steer him away from the run down St George's Walk shopping centre - not an image of Croydon the ruling Tories were keen to foster. But Boris charged on regardless to have his picture taken alongside one of the centre's business owners. He told the Advertiser when asked why he was in Croydon: "I am here to support the excellent work the council is doing." He was also in the town, he said, because "amazing things are starting to happen in Croydon". Verbally linking the new bridge with Westfield/Hammerson's plans for the Whitgift Centre, the Mayor said: "Building the bridge will help people get through to what will be one of the greatest shopping centres in Europe." And leaving no doubt he wanted people to re-elect Croydon's Tory council, he added: "My message to voters is to vote for a council which keeps council tax low, drives down costs and has a jobs programme. "Without the council and Mike Fisher's leadership, the Westfield/Hammerson deal would not have happened."

Crystal Palace boss not surprised with World Cup decision on Julian Speroni

CRYSTAL Palace boss Tony Pulis has admitted he "isn't surprised" goalkeeper Julian Speroni hasn't been picked for Argentina ahead of the World Cup. However, he is "disappointed" for the custodian following an outstanding season in the Premier League. The 34-year-old has never played for the full Argentina international side, only featuring once for the U20 side in 1999. The Eagles No.1 was awarded the fans' Player of the Year award last week and had hoped to play on the biggest stage of all. "He hasn't been called up to Argentina before so for me it wasn't a surprise," Pulis exclusively told the Advertiser. "I think if he was going to be in that squad, they would have spoken to him or he would have got one opportunity beforehand. "I don't think they would have picked someone having not been picked at all. Personally, I am not too surprised but I am disappointed for him." Speroni's contract runs out next month and talks are due to take place between Pulis and the stopper, who turns 35 on Sunday. "He has had such a wonderful season," Pulis said. "I think Jules is just concerned about playing at the moment and he's been a wonderful for servant for Palace." "He had a wonderful season last year, everyone loves him around the club and he's smashing fella, a real, real gentleman."

THE driver of a vehicle towing a caravan has fled a crash scene in Purley this morning - with police subsequently finding potentially contraband fuel in the caravan. Police were called to reports of a collision on Godstone Road between a 4x4 towing a caravan and another vehicle at approximately 7.20am this morning. When they arrived, the driver of the 4x4 had left the scene on foot. While no one was injured, police surrounded the abandoned vehicle and the caravan and carried out searches, finding barrels of red diesel in the towed caravan. The accident happened on Godstone Road between Sunnydene Road and Lower Road. It is illegal to use red diesel in ordinary road vehicles due to its significantly reduced tax levy compared to un-dyed diesel fuel. Police also searched local roads for the driver of the abandoned car.

Third delay for sentencing of Croydon fraudster Neelam Desai

THE sentencing of fraudster Neelam Desai has been delayed for a THIRD time. Desai, 33, of Beulah Grove, Selhurst, was due to appear at Croydon Crown Court tomorrow (Friday) to be sentenced for a series of frauds. But, for the third time in two months, the hearing has been moved. It is understood, as on the previous two occasions, the court received an eleventh hour application from Desai's defence team to reschedule the proceedings. As with the other adjournments, the court office was unable to confirm the reason for the delay. Desai's solicitor Glenn Fell, of Brooke Lavington Law, told the Advertiser today (Thursday) he was "not prepared" to discuss the adjournments. Desai was originally due to be sentenced on March 28 but the hearing was moved to April 25. That appearance was then adjourned until May 16 after an application, considered in camera, to Judge Stephen Waller. The case has now been moved to Monday (May 19) at Croydon Crown Court. On March 3, Desai pleaded guilty to writing two fraudulent cheques, handling a stolen chequebook, running an international travel business while bankrupt and three counts of trying to fraudulently sell iPhones she did not have. An investigation by the Advertiser has since linked her to a dating website scam where men were tricked out of tens of thousands of pounds. As a result of this investigation, Desai was arrested and later bailed on April 16 under suspicion of ten counts of fraud by false representation.

Murder accused 'can't remember stabbing Croydon teen Fico Dougan'

THE teenager accused of murdering student Fico Dougan has told a court he cannot remember stabbing the seventeen-year-old but had wanted to "scare" him. The 16-year-old told jurors today he had not realised something had happened to Mr Dougan until he saw blood on the knife, adding: "I just remember getting dragged." The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told the Old Bailey he picked up a knife after being told Mr Dougan had "touched up" a relative, which made him "sad and angry". The court has heard how he then walked into the living room and fatally stabbed Mr Dougan on the sofa, on September 25 last year. Denying murder at the Old Bailey, the defendant is arguing diminished responsibility on the grounds that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Giving evidence at day three of his trial today, the defendant said: "I wanted to scare Fico. I picked up the knife because I wanted to scare Fico because [a witness] told me that he forced himself on her." Mr Dougan repeatedly said he "was not thinking at the time" moments later when he went into the living room. He said he "did not remember" what happened, but recalled making a stabbing motion towards Mr Dougan, as if to threaten him. He added: "I was not hoping to stab him or kill him." Popular Archbishop Tenison's student Mr Dougan died at the scene from a stab wound to the heart. He and the defendant were at the house in Ockley Road, Broad Green, at the time visiting friends. The defendant had smoked cannabis earlier that morning and drank a small bottle of vodka the night before, the court heard. The defendant said he had not met Mr Dougan before, despite witnesses yesterday saying the pair had met but did not know each other well. He also contradicted a witness who said she had heard him say earlier that day that rap music made him "want to stab somebody". He told the court he had in fact said that rap music made him feel "lively". The 16-year-old added he felt "remorseful" over the incident and sad for Mr Dougan and his family. He told the court how the unexpected death of his close older half-brother a few weeks earlier had left him suffering flashbacks and sleeplessness. He had also started drinking heavily "to escape reality." The trial continues.
