DATA BLOG: How many people are registered to vote in Croydon?

NEW figures for potential voters across Croydon hint at which areas could cause a surprise when the borough goes to the polls on May 22. Figures provided to the Advertiser by the council show some wards have seen significant increases in the number of people registered to vote since the last election in 2010 while, in others, the electorate has fallen.
Excluding a handful of marginal seats, most commentators are fairly confident as to how Croydon will vote. But latest figures reveal that, in some areas, there will be a significant number of voters whose intentions are unclear, particularly in the most marginal wards where an increase in potential votes could make all the difference. Fairfield, in and around the town centre, has seen the biggest increase, with 1,148 (10 per cent) more people eligible to vote in 2014 than in 2010. The Conservatives hold the ward but with only a five per cent difference between their lowest polling councillor Susan Winborn and the nearest Labour challenger Robert Elliott. Broad Green is another area to have seen a significant increase in potential voters, with the electorate increasing 8 per cent in the last four years, though that still looks a safe Labour seat given the margin of victory in 2010. There was only three per cent between the Conservatives and Labour in Waddon, the ward many believe could predict the outcome of the election as a whole. Since then the number of people on the electoral roll has risen 5 per cent, suggesting the result will be as close – and unpredictable – as four years ago. The voting population in certain areas, such as Sanderstead and Selsdon and Ballards has shrunk. Most of the areas with the smallest increases are in the south of the borough, though interestingly the size of the electorate in Bensham Manor, in Croydon North, also fell. Overall, the number of registered voters in Croydon has risen from 253,266 to 259,936, an increase of 2.6 per cent. While the council vote does coincide with the European elections, the absence of a general election means the turnout is likely to be significantly lower than in 2010, making direct comparisons tricky. There is also the question of UKIP, the purple dinosaur in the room. But, these figures at least serve to highlight the areas of Croydon where there is all to play for in the coming weeks.

Man stabbed at Tim Westwood gig in Croydon town centre

A MAN was stabbed at a Tim Westwood gig inside a Croydon town centre club in the early hours of Easter Monday. The incident took place on April 21, at the 12-20 nightclub, in Crown Hill, at approximately 2.30am and resulted in what police have described as "mass disorder" inside the venue which spilled out into the street. A 26-year-old man was found with stab wounds and was taken to hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Three other men in their twenties were also assaulted during the incident. BBC Radio One hip-hop DJ Tim Westwood had played a special three hour set at the club that night. The manager of 12-20 said there was no evidence the incident took place within the club and there was nothing found on CCTV. Several people were arrested and the investigation is still ongoing but the police have now asked Croydon Council's licensing committee to suspend the club's licence. In the police report, compiled by Croydon Metropolitan Police Service licensing officer PC Darren Rhodes, it states that the venue, which was Shooshh until late February, is "the site of disorder most weekends". Police had spoken to the club's owner, Luke Mayle, the day before the Easter Sunday event about what they considered a 'medium-risk' event with Westwood playing. Investigating officers noted that at least two of the CCTV cameras were broken and one was pixelated, while it suggests the people concerned in the incident did not have their IDs scanned. It also states: "The Metropolitan Police has no confidence in the management of the premises. Having considered all options available to me I am of the opinion that this matter is so serious that a standard review procedure would be inappropriate and would not address the risk of further serious crime and disorder were the premises to reopen." Jetro Lopes, 20, of Lancing Road, Croydon, has been charged with attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, violent disorder and the possession of an offensive weapon. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Croydon Magistrates' Court on May 18. 12-20's licence was due to be reviewed at a licensing sub-committee meeting on Friday (May 2) morning. A 28-YEAR-OLD man from Addiscombe has appeared in court charged with raping a woman in Crawley. Jason Jelnicki, dressed all in black, appeared at Crawley Magistrates' Court today (April 30). He has been accused of raping a woman at Javelin Court, Pound Hill, between June 22 and 24 last year. At the hearing, Jelnicki only spoke to confirm his name and address. Judge Peter Crabtree then sent the case straight to crown court. Jelnicki was released on bail, on the conditions that he does not speak to his alleged victim, as well as a witness to his alleged crime. "There are bail conditions in place you must comply with - if not you will find yourself arrested," added Judge Crabtree. Jelnicki, of Davidson Road, Addiscombe, did not enter a plea. He will next appear at Lewes Crown Court on May 29.

Crystal Palace stopper hopes to join Manchester City trio in Brazil

JULIAN Speroni says he didn't get a chance to speak to some of Manchester City's Argentinian players about going to the World Cup on Sunday. The custodian is hoping to receive a call-up for his country after a string of top performances this season. Pablo Zabaleta, Martin Demichelis and Sergio Aguero look set to be on the plane to Brazil and all featured for City in their 2-0 win at Selhurst Park on Sunday. Speroni said: "I just wish them all the best. I hope to be there but if I'm not, I wish them well. "I didn't speak to them about Argentina and the World Cup, we spoke for a little bit but not about the national side. We didn't have the time really. "Manchester City are a massive team and we were so unlucky to concede so early in the game. "Everything turned uphill, especially against a team who can keep the ball like they do. "In the second half we did a little bit better and we had some chances. We always talk about being solid at the start of each game and to be switched on. "We made one mistake and that's it, 1-0." Yaya Toure extended City's lead shortly before the break with a well-placed finish after a storming run against Damien Delaney. And Speroni admitted City's ability to keep the ball was a major factor on the day. "I tried to close the angle for the second goal but he (Toure) picked his spot and put it right there," added the keeper. "I watched the ball all the way, it wasn't a hard shot, it was just placed perfectly and he's a top player. "They played the strongest team they had available, with Zabaleta, Aguero, Toure – whoever they pick, it's a strong team. "They were in control, they keep the ball and pass it around. It was so hard to take it from them."

A TODDLER was injured by an open razor apparently left in the sweet rack of a newsagent. McColl's says it is taking the incident at its Headley Drive branch on Saturday "very seriously" and has reported it to police. Jayne O'Connor's three-year-old daughter cut her finger after picking up the razor in the store. She told the Advertiser: "I just went down to the shop to get the newspaper and as I was paying by the counter my daughter handed me a disposable razor that had the cap off. "I asked where she had found it and she pointed to the shelf where the wrapped sweets were and said she had found it there. "The man behind the counter said he did not know where it had come from. It was not one that the shop sold." Ms O' Connor added that her daughter started crying when she walked out of the shop, before holding up her bleeding index finger. "It could be a complete accident but if is not I want them to be more careful," she continued. "What if it were a younger child?" A spokesman for McColl's said it was "extremely sorry" for the incident. She added: "We are taking the matter very seriously and have informed the police of the incident. "We have increased in-store monitoring and are reviewing CCTV footage to determine the cause."

HC-One apologises 'unreservedly' for neglect of 98-year-old woman at Oban House care home in South Croydon

THE provider of a care home has apologised "unreservedly" after staff were secretly filmed neglecting a 98-year-old woman. Oban House in South Croydon featured prominently in a BBC Panorama investigation, aired on Wednesday night, into poor standards of care for the elderly. It included distressing footage of Yvonne Grant crying out to staff for assistance 321 times in a single hour. "Oh please nurse, come," she can be heard to plead in the recording taken on a secret camera by Ms Grant's granddaughter in December 2012. When the great-grandmother's pleas were finally answered, the staff member refused to take her to the toilet, instead telling her to use an incontinence pad. After later returning, staff try to make her walk to toilet without the use of a hoist, before roughly dropping her back into bed in disgust and turning the light off to the room. When they leave again, Ms Grant says: "Oh, this is wicked this is. Please let me use the toilet. Please." Two and a half hours after first asking for help, another member of staff took Ms Grant to the toilet. She died around a month after the footage was taken. A consultant nurse told the programme Ms Grant had been subject to "emotional trauma, dehumanisation and physical pain". "This is a type of assault, but not the type of assault people understand," she said. An investigation by Croydon Council later ruled her treatment amounted to "neglect" and "institutional abuse". Last July two staff were convicted and sentenced to 20 week suspended sentences and 150 hours community service. One is appealing. Vanessa Evans, Ms Grant's granddaughter said: "On the surface [Oban House] looked smart, but when you go there for a while you begin to see the cracks. "I would go in there and she would start crying. She told me she didn't want to be there anymore. "When I saw the video I was devastated." HC-One, which took over Oban House when Southern Cross went bust in 2011, said the recording showed "shocking and distressing failings". A spokesperson said: "We do not tolerate this kind of behaviour. We apologised unreservedly to the late Ms Grant and her family, and we remain deeply sorry for the distress that was caused. This should never have happened. "As soon as we became aware of the situation we acted immediately to notify the Care Quality Commission, the local safeguarding team and the police. We suspended and later dismissed the staff involved. "We carried out a full investigation and acted quickly to implement a range of actions including improved training programmes, investment in the home including specialist equipment, and greater promotion of our independent whistle-blowing helpline. "The health, safety and wellbeing of our residents is our number one priority." Oban House cares for around 50 elderly people, including those with dementia. It was given a clean bill of health by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in November 2013. In another home featured in the investigation, this time in Essex, staff were shown taunting, roughly handling and even slapping a resident. One staff member has been sacked and seven others suspended. Norman Lamb, the minister for care and support, said the images "turn your stomach" adding that the investigation made a case for the use of cameras in care homes.

LIVERPOOL say they have been contacted by a number of their own fans voicing their concerns over other supporters travelling to Palace on Monday without tickets. In the highly-anticipated clash in south London, with the Reds gunning for the Premier League title, Liverpool are urging fans to only travel with an official ticket. Palace are working with Liverpool to make sure supporters with official tickets can get into their allocated area in the Arthur Wait Stand, while a number of extra stewards are expected to be on hand to help with security in SE25. The Metropolitan Police will be assisted by Merseyside Police before kick-off to sort out any illegal ticketing issues around the stadium.

Warrant out as Labour toilet pervert David Christison skips sentencing for holiday in Turkey

A WARRANT has been issued for the arrest of a former Labour candidate who secretly filmed men urinating - after he missed his sentencing for a holiday in Turkey. David Christison, 44, of Dunheved Road South, Thornton Heath, was due at Croydon Magistrates' Court today (May 1) after pleading guilty to filming men urinating for his own sexual gratification, on 30 separate occasions, in the Centrale shopping centre toilets. However, magistrate Ian McNeil has issued a warrant for his arrest after it emerged he had skipped his date with justice to go on holiday in Alanya in Turkey. Christison, who stood in Waddon at the council elections in 2010, wrote a letter to the court explaining his trip, but Mr McNeil dismissed it as "not being a very good reason". The magistrate issued an immediate warrant without bail and Christison could now be arrested when he arrives back at the airport from his break. It is now the third time Christison has avoided being sentenced. He missed one court appearance on March 20 because he said he was recovering from a heart attack. A further sentencing on April 3 was adjourned until today. The suspended West Thornton ward secretary has made little effort to hide his trip to Turkey, posting holiday snaps on his Facebook account as recently as yesterday (Wednesday). The photographs include a view of Alanya's harbour and fountains on the beachfront. Alanya is a popular tourist beach resort on the southern coast of Turkey known for its warm temperatures, natural attractions and historic medieval landmarks. Christison stood for Labour in a hotly-contested seat in Waddon in 2010, but has been suspended by the national party after the incident. He was the ward secretary in West Thornton until his offences came to light. Police were called to Centrale shopping centre on April 28 by security guards to reports of a man acting strangely in the men's public toilets. Christison was pointed out to security guards after witnessing him using his phone for voyeuristic purposes. Police found a video on his phone of another man urinating and a further search of his home found a number of laptops with 29 videos of a similar nature taken between April 2011 and March 2013. Prosecutors said the videos had obviously been taken covertly because they were filmed at urinal level. Christison's suspension from the Labour Party means he is not currently a member and his position will be reviewed at a later date. He lost out narrowly by 500 votes in the local elections in Waddon in 2010 to the nearest Conservative candidate. He attempted to make a legal challenge against the result, claiming polling stations were ill-equipped and under-staffed. Christison, who was receiving disability benefit at the time, gave up seven months later when the Legal Services Commission decided it could not fund his court battle.

THE daughters of a man stabbed to death in Selsdon Park Road last week have paid tribute to "the most loving person you could ever meet". The victim has now been formally identified as Andrew Else, 52, of Woodpecker Mount, Pixton Way, Selsdon. The Advertiser understands he was knifed around 100 times in a frenzied attack at about 10.30pm last Thursday (April 24). It is thought Mr Else was walking to his home when he was attacked opposite John Ruskin College. His three daughters today said in a statement: "If you weren't lucky enough to know our dad, he was funny, clever, caring and the most loving person you could ever meet. "He always put everybody else before him, and would have done anything for anyone, family or not. "We want to do this just so people know the truth and have heard it from us. All we can do now is fight for justice and that is what we will do." Police were called at around 10.30pm to reports of a man stabbed. Police officers, London Ambulance Service attended but Mr Else was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination tool place on Friday, April 25, at Croydon Mortuary and gave cause of death as multiple stab wounds. Ephraim Norman, 23, of Kensington Avenue, has been charged with murder, in connection with Mr Else's death. He appeared at the Old Bailey on Tuesday and spoke only to answer his name. He was remanded in custody until August 1, when he is due to enter a plea to the charge of murder. A trial is scheduled for October 6. For more on this story, see tomorrow's Croydon Advertiser.

Meredith Kercher: Italian judges reinstate guilty verdict for Amanda Knox

Amanda Knox delivered the fatal blow to Coulsdon student Meredith Kercher, Italian judges have said. Having reinstated the guilty verdict against Knox, the judges explained their ruling by saying it was she who "delivered the only mortal blow", striking Miss Kercher with a kitchen knife. Judges said they believe Knox and her former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, both carried knives while Rudy Guede held the victim down and sexually assaulted her. Knox and Sollecito were originally convicted of the murder in 2007. They were acquitted on appeal in 2011, but the ruling was overturned in January. Guede is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence after being convicted of Miss Kercher's murder at an earlier trial. Knox's trial will go to Italy's highest court if she and Sollecito appeal the ruling. At the moment, Knox is sentenced to 28 years and six months. while Sollecito has 25 years. If the current verdict is upheld, officials will have to begin attempts to extradite Knox from the US, where she returned after being released from prison in 2011.

Devoted elderly couple made apparent suicide pact, inquest hears

A DEVOTED elderly couple slit their wrists in a country park in an apparent suicide pact that one of them survived. Severely depressed John Gilbert, 76, died from blood loss in Seven Sisters Country Park, East Sussex, last September, while his wife, Mary Gilbert, 78, was taken to hospital and recovered. The pair had agreed to take their own lives due to Mr Gilbert's long-term depression, his inquest at Eastbourne Magistrates' Court heard today (Thursday). The "very much in love" couple of 20 years, who lived in The Waldrons, Waddon, spent the weeks beforehand staying at a hotel in Brighton to plan their pact, the inquest heard. On September 5, they travelled to the park in Exceat, Seaford, and waited for nightfall before each slitting their wrists with a razor. While Mr Gilbert died from the cut on his right wrist, Mrs Gilbert survived despite her cuts and eventually made her way to the road where she flagged down a passing car to seek help. She was at first arrested over the death, but prosecutors decided it would not be in the public interest to prosecute, and she faces no further action. In a statement to the inquest, the Crown Prosecution Service added: "Mr Gilbert had suffered for many years with depression and on June 2013 he had decided that he was going to end his life. "From the date they left their home address in June until September 5 they spent the time assessing the [best] location for their suicide. It added: "It was not until they both visited the park on Thursday September 5 that John decided the circumstances were ideal. "They prepared to commit suicide at the same time as each other." Mrs Gilbert was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital where she told police officers of the bond between her and Mr Gilbert and how they "did everything together." She added, according to police officer Allison Briggs who was at the hospital: "Ours was a unique relationship. […] All we wanted was a few extra years and the illness robbed us of it." The court heard how the couple had left suicide notes at the hotel where they had been staying, the Ambassador Hotel in New Steine, Brighton. The hotel's owner, Nick Head, described the couple as "utterly devoted to each other and very much in love," adding they were fondly regarded by staff who had got to know them. They had also left some money in an envelope for the Royal Bethlem Hospital in Beckenham, where Mr Gilbert, a retired railway engineer, had been treated for depression in the months before his death. The father-of-three was being prescribed several anti-depressants around the time of his death and had a long history of contact with mental health services. His mental health workers were worried about his wellbeing at the time of his death, but neither he nor his wife had been in touch after their leaving for Brighton. Coroner for East Sussex Alan Craze recorded a conclusion of suicide "while the balance of his mind was disturbed". Mr Gilbert's three children were by a previous marriage; he had none with Mrs Gilbert. His only son, Stephen Gilbert, 56, told the inquest that Mrs Gilbert was a good influence on her father and had helped keep him stable. He told reporters after the inquest the couple had a "very caring, loving relationship," and were "just like one person." He added: "He was headstrong. Mary could change his mind to a degree but this [suicide] unfortunately was I think due to his illness." His father was a "top engineer" who could fix anything from a "train to a watch," he added.

The summer signing has been out of action since March with a hamstring injury and it's been agreed in the best interests of both parties that Kebe returns to south London. Leeds boss Brian McDermott said: "Jimmy has gone back now. He wouldn't be fit to play, and his loan deal would be up after this weekend." In total, Kebe played nine times for the Elland Road outfit and scored once. The 30-year-old will now continue his rehabilitation with Palace.

Toilet pervert who skipped sentencing after telling Croydon magistrate he was on holiday in TURKEY actually at home in THORNTON HEATH

A PERVERT who told a magistrate he could not attend his sentencing because he was on holiday in Turkey is actually at home in Thornton Heath. Former council hopeful David Christison was due to be sentenced this morning (Thursday) for secretly filming men urinating in a shopping centre toilet. Instead he wrote a letter to Croydon Magistrates' Court to say he was unable to attend because he was in Turkey. The 44-year-old even posted pictures of the Turkish holiday destination of Alanya on his Facebook page in the days leading up to his court date. The excuse angered magistrate Ian McNeil who issued a warrant for Christison's arrest. After the hearing, however, a source told the Advertiser that the 'fugitive' was actually at home in his flat in Launceston Court, Dunheved Road South, in Thornton Heath. When a reporter and photographer visited his home at around 4.30pm today, Christison answered the door before quickly slamming it shut when he realised he had been rumbled. We called the police and informed them of his whereabouts only to be told the paperwork for the warrant had yet to be completed so no officers could attend. It is the third time Christison has avoided being sentenced after pleading guilty to secretly filming men urinating in Centrale for sexual gratification on 30 separate occasions between April 2011 and April 2013. On March 20 the hearing was adjourned after he was said to have had a heart attack. It was later put back again on April 3. Christison, who stood for the Labour Party in Waddon ward in 2010, posted what appeared to be holiday snaps from Turkey on Facebook yesterday. The photographs include a view of Alanya's harbour and fountains on the beachfront. But a neighbour told the Advertiser his windows had been open for the last few days and he had been seen walking around his flat.

THE latest verse from James Miller, the bard of Selhurst Park... SEVEN points, no hope, down and out Still sung, but not much to shout about. But Tony's come, critics mouths now shut, The red blue army's staying up. Worked his tricks, erased the fear, Crowd sings belief into their ear. Defence so tight, the back line shut, The red blue army's staying up. Our time this year, crucial the crunch, Jason throws the knock out punch. Doubts and questions, ifs, the buts, But the red blue army's staying up. Jules a wall between the sticks, Delaney, Ward, Yannick top picks. Crystal Palace boss: We will have to watch out for Liverpool's SAS

CRYSTAL Palace will have to be wary of Liverpool's 'outstanding' strike duo of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, according to manager Tony Pulis. The Eagles welcome the Premier League title contenders to Selhurst Park on Monday evening, looking to dent Liverpool's chances of winning a first top flight title in more than two decades. But with Suarez and Sturridge - who have scored 50 league goals between them - in their side, Pulis says his side will have to be on top form. "You look at Liverpool and they have a brilliant partnership up front," he said. "Suarez is a fantastic player and this season, he has been wonderful. "But also they have Sturridge who has also been superb and they have formed a great partnership. "It will be good for our supporters to see top, top players like that, but I am more concerned about us and making sure we turn up and give it a right go."

Palace boss Pulis is not surprised by Liverpool's fantastic season

TONY PULIS says he is not overly surprised by Liverpool's challenge for the title this season. The Crystal Palace boss, speaking at a press conference ahead of his side's clash with the Reds on Monday, says he feels Liverpool have had an advantage in the title race, not playing in Europe this season. And with the recent investment in the club, he believes their title challenge is not completely unexpected. "There has been a lot of investment in Liverpool," he said. "Kenny Dalglish spent good money on Luis Suarez and Jordan Henderson, and they have really blossomed this year. "Brendan Rodgers has also spent some decent money and the big bonus they have had is not having the cup competitions and Europe to worry about. "They have been able to concentrate on games week to week and that has certainly helped, without a question of a doubt. "And with players like Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, it is no surprise really." However, Pulis was full of praise for the job done by Rodgers at Anfield, adding that he had impressed his identity on the club. "Brendan has done a smashing job," he said. "He has put his identity on the club and I always enjoy seeing a manager do that. "They have an identity and it is nice to see a British manager doing so well."
