NEXT season, Croydon will once again be home to a Premier League football team. And to celebrate this fact, a banner proclaiming the Eagles' top division status was draped over the Wellesley Road underpass - for rush-hour drivers and tram passengers to see in all its glory. The banner, designed by Palace supporters' group the Holmesdale Fanatics, read: 'The Palace are staying up'. After it was displayed so prominently in the town centre, several pictures of the display were posted on Twitter. The HF have become renowned for their spirited, motivational messages and displays before matches at Selhurst Park. In a cheeky swipe at moneybags opponents Man City on Sunday, a banner behind the goal read: 'You've got the money, we've got the soul.'

Susanna Reid: Positive reviews for former Croydon schoolgirl's new show Good Morning Britain

CRITICS and viewers have given Susanna Reid's new morning show on ITV the thumbs-up. Good Morning Britain launched on Monday, with four hosts led by the 43-year-old Croydon-born Crystal Palace fan. Strictly star Susanna, a former Croham Hurst and Croydon High pupil, defected from the BBC earlier this year, in a deal reported to be worth £1m. But, if the first day is anything to go by, the general consensus seems to be that Susanna's new show could provide a genuine ratings threat to her former BBC Breakfast pals. The Telegraph's Michael Hogan wrote: "Recent big money BBC-to-ITV defectees, notably Adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley, have struggled in their new home. On this evidence, Reid should settle in more easily." And Digital Spy's Alex Fletcher, also alluding to ITV's previous failed attempt to dominate the breakfast TV schedule, added: "Ben [Shephard] and Susanna are more adept at switching between the desk and the sofa than any of the Daybreak hosts ever were." For her part, Susanna is excited by the American feel of the show, which has more than a whiff of the sort of breakfast TV that viewers Stateside have become accustomed to. She said: "œOur set is different, fresh and it's not what people have been used to over the last couple of years in breakfast television. "œIt is something new and exciting for us. We all start behind the desk, which hasn't happened for a while. It's a good place for us all to be sitting." Susanna hosts the show alongside Ben Shephard, Charlotte Hawkins and Sean Fletcher.

Fears voiced over Purley hospital injuries unit 'downgrade'

PATIENTS have been urged to fight plans to 'downgrade' Purley hospital – by the NHS boss responsible for its recent multi-million pound redevelopment.

Suzanne Joyce, a project manager hired to oversee the £11 million revamp of the War Memorial Hospital, completed last year, has disputed figures used by health chiefs as a basis for labelling the Brighton Road facility a 'minor injuries unit' rather than 'urgent care centre'.

Under the changes, to take effect from next Thursday (May 1), the centre will be open from 2-8pm, rather than 8am-8pm currently.

There are also fears that patients with more serious injuries will be turned away to Croydon University Hospital, although health bosses have denied this will be any different to the way patients are currently dealt with.

Speaking at a residents' meeting in Kenley on Tuesday, Ms Joyce said the urgent care centre had been in place since 2010 but would now be downgraded to a minor injuries unit from May 1.

"I do think this will be a big change for Purley and urge you to write to your MP or the CCG [clinical commissioning group] about it," she said.

Ms Joyce disagreed with the CCG's figures that only 19 people visit the urgent care centre on average each day. "I have done the number crunching from visits in the last 18 months and it's between 35 and 55 patients every day. Sometimes it can be as many as 70," she said.

The CCG has cited the low attendance figures as the main reason for cutting opening hours at the centre and changing the type of walk-in treatment available at the hospital.

It has sought to calm the fears raised by Ms Joyce and has, for example, denied a suggestion that patients needing an X-ray without an appointment would now be sent to Croydon University Hospital – the borough's remaining urgent care centre – under the changes.

Dr Agnelo Fernandes, a local GP and assistant clinical chairman of Croydon CCG, said: "It is important that everyone is clear that the current service at Purley isn't the same as an A&E or an urgent care centre. It is a minor injuries unit, and nothing has changed in that respect. People should therefore continue to go there with minor cuts, sprains, and strains.

"People with serious injuries and emergencies – like bleeding you can't stop, serious broken bones, blackouts, severe chest pain, and stroke – will need to carry on going to the emergency department at Croydon University Hospital as they always have."

Dr Fernandes added the reduction in opening hours would be reviewed in three months' time.

Lidl to put its case for new store in Sanderstead at planning inquiry

THE "David and Goliath" contest between the people of Sanderstead and German supermarket giant Lidl is coming to a head today (Tuesday). Having been sent to the Planning Inspectorate, Lidl's application to overturn the council's refusal of its plans will now be heard at Fairfield Halls. However, Paul Redington, who is leading the local opposition to Lidl's plans for a store in Limpsfield Road, has complained that the retailer will have an unfair advantage. "At the eleventh hour Lidl have said they will be bringing a lawyer with them, a QC and deputy high court judge no less," he said. "They have also submitted a 120-page document which we have no chance of responding to. "We are trying to petition the council to provide their own lawyer too, to add weight to our case." Mr Redington said the council was in a "unique position" as officers originally recommended that the planning application go through, but councillors unanimously rejected them in October. The supermarket appealed to the Planning Inspectorate, who will be holding the hearing starting today. Both sides will get the chance to put forward their evidence and opinions before the inspector goes to the site to visit. A council spokesman said: "The council will be robustly defending its decision to refuse this application at the planning inspector's hearing. "We will stand firmly by our reasons for refusal and intend to make a strong case to the inspector for our decision to be upheld." Recently we reported how Lidl has now also expressed an interest in opening a store in Brighton Road, South Croydon.

FAN COLUMN: Crystal Palace staying up early is so significant

Winning promotion on the last day of the season can provide incredible entertainment to supporters, as can achieving safety, but there's greater value in securing your status with weeks to spare. One of the concerns going into this season was that we just weren't ready for Premier League football. We weren't prepared. Our stadium needed work, our squad needed additions, our entire structure needed to be reorganised. Ian Holloway spoke of the difficulty of securing players two or three weeks behind fellow Championship promotees. It's difficult to compete at the bottom of the table anyway - to have other relegation rivals gain an advantage just makes the task more difficult. Which is why achieving Premier League safety weeks before the season's end is so significant. The club have more time to think through next season's strategy - what do we need, who do we need to sign, what do we intend to do next season? All of these questions can be answered in advance rather than by waiting to see where we lie once all the fixtures are completed. The club are already being linked with a number of players and the infrastructure will take a further advanced step with undersoil heating being installed during the summer. It's a strange phenomenon to be safe with two figures to go, but the club can't and won't rest on its laurels.

Man in the mask wants top ten finish for Crystal Palace

CRYSTAL Palace defender Adrian Mariappa says he and his team-mates need to put on top displays against Liverpool and Fulham despite achieving Premier League survival early. The Eagles went down to a strong Manchester City side on Sunday but Mariappa says the focus is finishing on high which could mean a top-ten finish. The versatile defender has been playing with a broken nose after a clash with Leighton Baines two weeks ago too. "It's still broken so we're looking at getting it fixed," Mariappa told the Advertiser. "It's the first time I've worn a mask, it's a bit strange and quite hard to get used to. "Once the game starts though, you forget about it. I have got the odd joke though, like Zorro, Batman, the lot! "It was a tough game against City, it didn't go to plan, especially as we wanted to keep our run going. "We have been solid at the back and from our point of view they were two poor goals to concede. "We want to finish as high as we can. We have a chance of finishing in the top half of the table which is a big incentive for all of us. "It would be great to finish the season on a high and not let it peter it. We owe it to the teams that we'll put in everything, and that's what we'll try to do."

'Neighbour from hell' Kelly Lineker kicked out of 'drug den' Upper Norwood flat for persistent anti-social behaviour

A 'neighbour from hell' from Upper Norwood whose flat was the scene of drug use, loud music and fighting has been kicked out of her home today. Kelly Lineker, 25, is unable to enter or live at 83, The Lawns, for three months after a closure order was made on the property today. The order sought by Croydon Council was granted at Croydon Magistrates' Court today (April 29) and Lineker will have to leave the flat by 6pm today. The court was told of loud music, drug use and dealing, loitering, and youths coming and going from the flat. Lineker, the tenant, and Kimberley Andrews, the leaseholder, were given repeated warnings by the council and during a raid in August last year police found cannabis, cocaine and other drug paraphernalia. No one will be able to enter or live at the property for at least three months, when the order will be reviewed. Neighbours complained to council officers repeatedly, with one saying they were "worried and edgy all the time" and felt like prisoners in their own homes. Another neighbour described it as similar to living "under siege", while others said they wanted to move away from the area. Rob Williams, the council's legal representative, said other neighbours had been reluctant to give evidence "for fear of reprisals". He also said there had been reports of an incident at the property this morning. Lineker will also have to pay £3,000 in costs within 28 days because she initially contested the matter although she dropped the contest before the matter came to court. Lead magistrate Derek Cock, granting the order, said: "We believe it is necessary because of the behaviour at the property, the substantial use of drugs and in the past there has been a lot of noise generated. "There is a history of persistent nuisance. "A lot of effort has been made by Croydon Council over the years to get you to address these issues." Tony Brooks, the council's director of public safety, said: "Lineker's behaviour has been the stuff of nightmares for the people who live in this block. Thankfully, this has now come to an end. "This home has been a magnet for persistent drug use and antisocial behaviour, which is why we have taken the action of seeking a closure order to stop anybody living at or entering the property."

Controversial broadcaster slams Crystal Palace fans' banner against Manchester City

OUTSPOKEN broadcast journalist Adrian Durham has slammed Crystal Palace fans for their banner against Manchester City on Sunday. In his latest Daily Mail column, Durham has questioned fans up and down the country for a number of banners shown during the last round of matches in the Premier League. Those include ones by Newcastle United and West Ham fans towards managers Alan Pardew and Sam Allardyce. But the large design created by the Holmesdale Fanatics at the weekend, displaying the words 'You Got The Money, We Got The Soul' towards City has been lambasted by Durham. It's not the first time either the Peterborough United fan has upset the Selhurst Park natives, claiming that Palace were awarded too many penalties last season. He wrote: "That embarrassing effort at Selhurst Park. "Palace fans spent time and energy making a banner aimed at their Manchester City opponents on Sunday which declared: 'You Got The Money, We Got The Soul.' "I laughed out loud at this nonsense, thought up by someone who has no idea about - and didn't bother to research - the amount of incredible work in the community Manchester City Football Club's owners have done, and what a fantastic facility they are creating for locals to use in and around the Etihad Stadium. "The logic that says a club with money can't possibly have a soul is flawed everywhere you look – are you telling me Real Madrid have no soul? "The Man City fans who were on the away terrace at York's Bootham Crescent ground in December 1998 and saw their team lose 2-1 probably still go to the Etihad today. "They know about the soul of a football club. And everything is relative of course. "So when Palace offered to shovel a shedload more money than any other club into Bosman striker Glenn Murray's bank account to secure his services back in 2011, was that the Eagles losing their soul? "It seems with songs and banners some fans have lost their way in the Premier League this season."

Addiscombe Carnival parade cancelled due to lack of support and funds

The Addiscombe Carnival parade has been cancelled for the second year running due to "various adverse conditions", its organisers have confirmed. The carnival, organised by the Croydon Lions, is still due to take place on Sunday, May 25, in Ashburton Park. But the parade has been cancelled because of bridge works reducing the potential length of the parade, a lack of local support and sponsorship and a lack of budget as a result. The Spring Lane bridge works have caused traffic diversions and Croydon Council ordered the route be shortened. A lack of sponsorship means there is no budget to hire items or a band to lead the parade. Croydon Lions member Derek Withers apologised for the cancellation but said organisers felt there was no option in the circumstances.

MILE Jedinak was disappointed Crystal Palace's five-match unbeaten run came to an end against Manchester City on Sunday. Had the Eagles won against the title-chasers, they would have set a new club record in the Premier League after equalling what the 1992/93 squad accomplished. However, Jedinak admitted that it wasn't on his or his team-mates' minds and that there is still a lot for Palace to play for come May 11. "It was always going to be difficult when you put yourself on the backfoot in conceding too early and we didn't really give ourselves too much of a chance," he said. "I thought we were a little bit too open for how we wanted to play and got away from that which has got us success recently. "Although we did battle hard to try and get back in, it just wasn't meant to be. The quality of the opposition was a factor, but we were disappointed with how we started and let them have those two goals. "It is a shame the run has come to an end. I know as much as anybody that we tried to keep that run going, even though we were playing City. "I am not too sure if we thought about previous records, you just try and go about your business. "People will always mention records and bring them up, and fair enough, but going into games you don't really think about that too much. "It's a shame we don't have the record but saying that, what we have done so far has been great. "The fans came out and backed us all the way against City which is fantastic. It was just a little bit disappointing we let them off the hook in a sense. "I felt we let ourselves down a little bit but there is still a lot to play for, in terms of the next couple of games. "I am sure we won't allow ourselves to try and do that sort of thing again."

ADRIAN Mariappa says he will continue to "give everything" for Crystal Palace, no matter what position he plays in. The summer signing's preferred position is centre-back, which is what he was brought in for initially under former boss Ian Holloway, but Mariappa has been utilised mainly as a right-back this season. And he has revelled in the position, providing support for Jason Puncheon going forward as well as keeping a calm head at the back. "I'm just working hard, I want to play to play games like everyone else," Mariappa told the Advertiser. "I am used to playing week in, week out, but whether I'm playing or not I'll still work hard for the team and support the team the best I can. "I'll give everything playing right-back, left-back, wherever the gaffer decides to play me. "The manager was disappointed obviously with the Manchester City result but we'll look to work on that and improve during the week. "There were some positives we can take out of it. They didn't have too many chances but we conceded two at home so we know we can do better. "Liverpool will be our last home game of the season so we'll be wanting to give our fans a nice send-off. "We will be going out there to get the win."

CRYSTAL Palace midfielder Jonny Williams won Ipswich Town's Goal of the Season award on Tuesday night. The Wales international, who has been on loan at Portman Road for two months, scored a brilliant long range effort against Derby County on March 25. A free-kick was played short on the left from Aaron Cresswell to Williams, who took a few touches to steady himself before unleashing a stinging drive into the bottom corner. The equalising goal came midway through the second half after the Rams had taken the lead after just a minute. And it got better for Williams and the Tractor Boys as Christophe Berra scored a 90th-minute winner. So far, Williams has played 12 times for Ipswich and looks set to play his final game against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday as the Championship comes to a close. Watch Williams' goal, below.

CROHAM played Roundwood B in Division One in this fast-paced, exciting match that saw Roundwood leading right through until the last quarter. Both teams played some fantastic, competitive netball. Croham, with only seven players to choose from, saw Bev Walford step into wing attack from her usual defensive role. Going into the third quarter Roundwood were ahead by ten but with some solid defensive play by Jacqui Sullivan (gd) and Kim Akanbi (gk) Croham managed to claw the score back. An unfortunate injury to the Roundwood goal keeper, Abbie Roberts, meant the last quarter saw the lead changing between the teams at every centre pass. Goal for goal, the final few minutes saw both teams trying to take the initiative and punish any error, with Roundwood running out eventual winners 55-54, Croham scoring what could have been a goal to tie the scores just at the final whistle. Player of the match was the goal keeper from each team, Kim Akanbi from Croham and Abbie Roberts from Roundwood B. Also in Division One Hayes beat HS B with a convincing win, 65-19. Hayes' Lacy Congran (gd) and HS B Lynn Roberts were voted most sporting players by the umpires for this match - Kay Martin and Amy Rendle. Also in Division One United A played Highlanders B. This was United A's second game of the week for the Croydon league with a squad of seven and a positive attitude was needed. A solid first quarter across the court gave United the upper hand. At 11-6 Highlanders came out fighting in the second to close the gap 17-13. An even third quarter where both teams matched each other goal for goal. United still held the upper hand 27-22. With everything to play for United gave a final push and capitalised on turn around's claiming the win 37-29. The most sporting players were Emma Waldron and Liz Ford. United B got there much needed win in Division Three in the last game of the season beating Selsdon 43-19 . Most sporting player for United was Kim Wyatt and for Selsdon Sarah Barnard. In Division Four HSC beat Wellcome 36-28. HS took the lead by three goals but Wellcome fought back to draw the quarter. HS made some changes to attack and Wellcome gained their seventh player and took the lead 19-15. By the end of the third quarter HS had pulled back and were leading by seven. For the final quarter, Aliya Christie came on as wing defence. Wellcome made some fine interceptions and great play from Claire Finn, however it was not enough to catch up. Captain Holly Bishop from HS positively encouraged the girls throughout the game.

A CARE home in Croydon is to feature on a BBC programme this evening about standards of care for the elderly. Panorama will include footage filmed inside Oban House care home in Bramley Hill, South Croydon. It shows carers ignoring great-grandmother Yvonne Grant, 98, crying out for assistance 321 times in a single hour. The footage was taken from a hidden camera placed in the room by her granddaughter Vanessa Evans. Ms Grant died in January last year, less than a month later. Her case will feature in a Panorama investigation into abuse at care homes. In another home in Essex, staff are shown taunting, roughly handling and even slapping a resident. One staff member has been sacked and seven others suspended. The video of Ms Grant shows the mother-of-four crying out for help hundreds of times, including 45 requests to be taken to the toilet. A member of staff arrives two-and-a-half hours later. Speaking to the Mirror, her granddaughter Vanessa Evans, 43, said: "When I saw the video I was devastated and fuming. But I can't say I was shocked." When told by her granddaughter that the incident had been secretly filmed, Ms Grant said: "Does that mean it will stop and not happen to other people?" Panorama: Behind Closed Doors: Elderly Care Exposed will be aired on BBC One tonight (Wednesday) at 9pm.

TROJANS Korfball Club have retained their title as England korfball champions following the England Korfball League play-offs held at Whitgift School Sports Centre in Croydon last weekend. In the semi-finals held on Saturday, Trojans, who are based in Croydon, qualified for the final by defeating Norwich Knights 25-17 in their semi-final. Meanwhile, Tooting-based Bec defeated Epsom-based Nomads 18-11 in the other semi-final. In the final on Sunday, Bec quickly jumped out to a 5-0 lead against Trojans and led 11-4 early in the second half. However, Trojans fought back to level the scores and at full-time, the two teams were tied at 17-17. This meant the final would be decided by a period of "golden goal" extra time. Trojans' David Brooks put his side 18-17 ahead which meant that Bec were allowed one more attacking play to see if they could equalise. However, Trojans were able to regain possession of the ball to end the game and confirm themselves as national champions. Brooks was the top scorer for Trojans in the final with seven goals while Davesh Patel was the top scorer for Bec with six. Also on Sunday, Nomads clinched third place by defeating Norwich Knights 25-17 in the third/fourth place play-off. Joe Olds led the scoring charts for Nomads with eight goals in the match with Heather Ikwuemesi also contributing four for the Epsom side. At the same event, the England Korfball League promotion/relegation play-offs were played which included Highbury who are based in North London. However, Highbury found the tournament tough going losing all four of their matches. They will therefore remain in the London Regional League next season.

Croydon town centre nightclub 12-20 threatened with closure after Easter Monday stabbing

A MAN was stabbed inside a Croydon town centre club in the early hours of Easter Monday. The incident took place on April 21, at the 12-20 nightclub, on Crown Hill, at approximately 2.30am and resulted in what police describe as "mass disorder" inside the venue which continued out into the street. However, 12-20's manager said there was no evidence the incident took place within the club and there was nothing found on CCTV. Several people were arrested and the investigation is still ongoing but the police have now asked Croydon Council's licensing committee to suspend the club's licence. In the police report, compiled by Croydon Metropolitan Police Service licensing officer PC Darren Rhodes, it states that the venue, formerly known as Shooshh, is "the site of disorder most weekends". Investigating officers noted that at least two of the CCTV cameras were broken and one was pixelated, while it suggests the people concerned in the incident did not have their IDs scanned. It also states: "The Metropolitan Police have no confidence in the management of the premises. Having considered all options available to me I am of the opinion that this matter is so serious that a standard review procedure would be inappropriate and would not address the risk of further serious crime and disorder were the premises to reopen."
