Former Sun reporter Ben Ashford cleared of illegally accessing iPhone messages

A FORMER reporter with The Sun has been cleared of hacking into an iPhone to access saucy text messages between a married TV star and a PR agent.

Ben Ashford, of The Chase, Coulsdon, was accused of trawling through more than 1,000 text messages and explicit photos on the woman's iPhone, despite knowing it had been stolen.

But the 35-year-old was found not guilty at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, having previously told the court: "I don't want to go down in history as a liar."

Ashford claimed during his trial that he had been dragged through the courts because of the "zeal" to secure convictions of journalists in the wake of the phone hacking scandal.

The court heard how, in October 2009, he was dispatched by The Sun's assistant news editor Will Barker to collect the phone, containing lewd text messages and pictures.

The initial tip-off came from Sameena Rashid, who said her friend had found the handset on the floor outside the exclusive Circle Club in Manchester while having a cigarette two days earlier.

Ashford took the phone home and analysed the contents, drawing up an 18-page dossier of the relationship between the star and the woman - both of whom cannot be named - to send to Mr Barker and assistant news editor Steve Kennedy.

The reporter, who started his career on the Croydon Advertiser, was accused of trawling the phone, knowing that it was stolen and the owner had not given authorisation.

But Ashford told the court: "I thought at the time there may well be consent.

"When I accessed it, I thought there was a pretty good chance this could be a person wanting a story to come out."

Ashford said he was told to return the phone after seeking legal advice, after which the theft was reported and Ms Rashid accepted a police caution.

But the incident was dredged up two years later, when Ashford's emails to the newsdesk were handed to police in the wake of the phone hacking scandal involving former Sun and News of the World editors Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson.

A jury of five men and seven women took just under four hours to find Ashford not guilty of possessing criminal property and accessing the phone without authority.

Ashford, who was axed by the Daily Mail after his arrest and now works for a news agency in Plymouth, put his head in his hands and took a deep breath when the verdicts were delivered.

Police are appealing information after a woman was seriously sexually assaulted in Thornton Heath. The attack happened at 9.40pm on July 18 as the woman, in her mid-20s, walked in Ecclesbourne Road at the junction with Bensham Manor Road. She had been walking from Thornton Heath station. As she turned into Ecclesbourne Road, a man grabbed her from behind, forced her to the floor and seriously sexually assaulted her. He then fled with another man who was acting as a lookout. The attacker is described as black, aged around 16, of slim build and around 5ft 4ins tall. He was wearing a red cap, red hooded top and blue jeans. His accomplice is also black, aged around 15, of slim build and around similar height. He was wearing a black shirt and a woolly hat. "This attack happened at a time when there would have been a number of people walking back from the local railway station," he said. "Although the whole incident lasted around 20 seconds it would have been very noticeable. "If you saw anything of the incident, or two black males running away from the scene, please contact police." CROYDON'S James Dasaolu stormed to gold in the 100m at the European athletics championships tonight (Wednesday).

The 26-year-old started slowly but soon raced through the field, to finish clear of reigning champion, Frenchman Christophe Lemaitre, in a time of 10.06 secs.

Sutton's Henry Aikines-Aryeetey made it a double  celebration for Team GB to bag the bronze medal behind Lemaitre.

Dasaolu, who broke the 10 second barrier, has been beset by injuries during his sprint career and this is his first major international title.

Elsewhere in Zurich, Croydon's Martyn Rooney ran an impressive 45.40 secs to qualify for the 400m final, which will take place on Friday.

Students across Croydon to learn A-level and AS-level results

STUDENTS across Croydon will find out their A-level and AS-level results this morning, with record numbers of university places on offer.

Early results show improvement at a number of the borough's schools and sixth form colleges.

Croydon College is celebrating some of its best ever results, with seven subjects hitting the 100 per cent pass rate mark.

The college, which received an improved Ofsted rating in June, achieved an overall pass rate of 93 per cent, an improvement on last year.

A spokesman said the college had done well in both "traditional" subjects, such as English literature, chemistry, history, further maths and biology, as well as more "modern" subjects such as media studies, sociology and politics.

Principal Frances Wadsworth said: "These results underline and endorse Ofsted's recent judgement that success rates have improved dramatically and confirm that our results are continuing to soar upwards.

"I'm proud of the work that students have undertaken, with support from committed staff, to ensure the best possible outcomes and futures for our students.

"We're determined to make Croydon College the best college in London, so making a substantial difference to our community."

Coulsdon Sixth Form College also posted high pass rates, with nearly all A-level subjects achieving 100 per cent A* to E grades.

Principal Brett Freeman said he was "absolutely delighted" with the "unprecedented" success.

"I have nothing but praise for our staff and students in all their efforts," he added.

Thomas More Catholic School, in Purley, was among those to post perfect pass rates at A-level and BTEC Level 3, up from 97 per cent in 2013. The school said the results had enabled two thirds of pupils to go to the university of their choice.

Success stories included Andriana Omelyanovska, who did not speak English when she moved to England from Ukraine seven years ago, but emerged as one of Thomas More's top performers, with five A levels including an A in Russian.

Joyce Cowan, Daniel Mehretab and Cynthia Okpuru also achieved five passes, with Victor Gandra and Mahnoor Iqbal both with four passes, all at A*, A and B grades.

Head teacher Margaret Mulchrone said students had "set their minds to succeed" and had "reaped the rewards" of the school's "outstanding" teachers.

This year was only the second set of A Level results for Oasis Academy Shirley Park, which achieved a 98 per cent pass rate and its highest percentage of A* to B grades.

Student Lucy Dekker's results secured her a place at the Royal Vetinary College, the first student from the academy to do so. Taylor Collcut's A* in photography means she has been accepted into Falmouth to study photography.

Associate principal Louise Lee said: "The students should be very proud of their efforts as they now take up their places at universities up and down the country."

A record number of university places are available across the country - 30,000 more than last year - and it is expected that over 500,000 places will be allocated for courses starting in the autumn.

Almost half of all grades achieved by students at Riddlesdown Collegiate, in Purley, were A*, A or Bs, an increase of almost five per cent on 2013. Three quarters were C or higher and the school's overall pass result was 98 per cent.

Maths was Riddlesdown's most successful subject, with 71 per cent of pupils reaching a A* to B grade.

Gordon Smith, the college's principal, said: "At a time when there is turbulence in A Level grades locally and nationally, and we are told to expect a fall in standards, the students and staff here at Riddlesdown have produced a magnificent set of results."

John Ruskin College, in Selsdon, posted an overall pass rate of 97.8 per cent in their BTECs and 62.6 per cent achieving high grades (the equivalent of A* to B across three A levels).

The first sixth formers at The Quest Academy, in Selsdon, achieved a 98 per cent pass rate at A levels. Nearly half got A* to C grades and 35 per cent of those got A* to B.

Head girl Rene Andersen achieved A*, A and C in religious education, sociology and English literature and will study sociology and philosophy at the University of Essex. Shannon Pace will leave Quest with A*, A and C, Robyn Clarke achieved A, B and B and Rebecca Hope got A, A and B.

Principal Andy Crofts said pupils had achieved highly, "sometimes against challenging odds".

He added: "They are Quest's first sixth formers and have done us all proud."

Virgo Fidelis Convent Senior School, in Upper Norwood, had several exam success stories.

Maria Christy Joshy joined in Year 12 from Kerala, India, and, despite having to learn a new language, has managed to achieve an A* for maths and A grades for further maths, chemistry and physics and an AS in biology.

Speaking from India today, Maria Christy told head teacher Sister Bernadette: "I feel really happy with such amazing results."

Student Sarah Reynolds spent the last year in and out of hospital with a debilitating illness. She was sent all her work via email and extra tuition was arranged during the times she was back at home. She managed to achieve an A in CACHE (Care, health and education).

There were scenes of cheering outside Trinity School as sixth formers celebrated their combined efforts which have seen the private school post its best ever results, with 91.9 per cent A* to B grades.

Head master Mark Bishop praised the pupils for their hard work, adding: "My thanks go to all the staff for their incredible commitment and support to help pupils achieve their best."

Grace Sinden achieved thee As and will study French literature and English literature at King's College London. Twins Sophie and Ben Foreman achieved two A*s and 4 As between them. Sophie (2A*s and 1 A) is off to Warwick to study history and Ben (3 As) is to study philosophy at University College London.

Woodcote High School posted an overall pass rate of 99 per cent, with 90 per cent of students gaining their first choice of university.

Pupil Jake Mulley had particular reason to be pleased, the school said. He left Woodcote after Year 11 and went to a larger sixth form but returned after disappointing AS level results. He was told today that he had achieved an A and two Bs. He is off to Brighton to study physiotherapy.

Andy Booth, principal of Oasis Academy Coulsdon, said the school had achieved an overall pass rate of 96 per cent, with 39 per cent of students leaving with A* to B grades.

Languages, drama & theatre studies and BTEC science were three of the academy's strongest performances.

Head boy Daniel Borer did particularly well in his BTEC extended diploma in science, achieving three distinctions, securing him a place at Reading University to study food science and business. His goal is to work in research and development for Mars.

Yashley Bissonauth, 19, from South Croydon, attained BBC grades in business, geography and maths and is going to study law at Brunel University.

As expected, Old Palace of John Whitgift School, an independent girls' school, posted impressive results, with 95 per cent of students achieving A* to C grades, and 82 per cent securing their first choice of university.

St Mary's Catholic High School, which is bidding farewell to head teacher Ejiro Ughwujabo, who is retiring, saw a 95 per cent pass rate.

Archbishop Tenison's celebrated a 98 per cent pass rate, with particular success in art, English literature, geography, politics, German, further maths, and drama.

Head teacher Richard Parrish said: "At a time when A levels are getting harder our results show a modest improvement. I am so impressed by those who gained a whole string of high grades. It is difficult for people to understand how much dedication that requires these days."

Norbury Manor Business and Enterprise College for Girls, in Thornton Heath, achieved a record breaking year, with a pass rate to 99.5 per cent. Some 34 per cent of grades awarded were at the highest A* to B grades.

Head teacher Amanda Compton said: "All students who wanted to go to university obtained a place. This is a fantastic outcome reflecting the hard work and commitment made by both staff and students."

The BRIT School hailed a "exceptional" day for its vocational students, with 68 per cent achieving three D* (distinctions). The school's A-level pass rate was 100 per cent A* to E, with 79 per cent achieving A* to C grades.

The school singled out student Taylor Anderson for particular praise for her three D* in her dance diploma as well as an A in A-level dance, an A in English literature and a B in history. Taylor said: "I am so proud of these results. I have worked hard, been supported by my parents and teachers and had the time of my life."

Crystal Brown gained three D* in her BTEC level 3 extended diploma in theatre, gaining a place at the prestigious acting school in New York, but deciding to take up another place at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

Southampton midfielder Jack Cork has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace, according to the Daily Mail. The Eagles are believed to be on the verge of signing a Premier League midfielder, according to co-chairman Steve Parish, with the likes of Stoke City midfielder Steven Nzonzi also linked. Cork is highly-rated on the south coast and a bid of around £3m has been suggested by the tabloid. Saints legend Matt Le Tissier tweeted on Thursday morning: "If @jackcork1 leaves for £3 million someone would have got the bargain of the season. #verygoodfootballer" If Cork signs for Palace, technically he'll be coming back home to the area having been born in Carshalton, just four miles from Croydon and six from Selhurst Park. The 25-year-old began his career at Chelsea and was sent out on loan before departing for Southampton permanently in 2011. Cork also played three times for Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Steven Nzonzi is NOT the midfielder Crystal Palace are after

STOKE City boss Mark Hughes has ruled out Steve Nzonzi leaving the club for Crystal Palace. The midfielder has been heavily linked with a reunion with Tony Pulis after emailing Stoke a request to leave earlier this summer. But Hughes insists the 25-year-old is fully focused on life with the Potters ahead of the Premier League opener against Aston Villa at home on Saturday (3pm). Nzonzi is expected to be one of the first names on the teamsheet and the manager hints it has not been too difficult for peace to break out. "He's looked really sharp and looks in a good place. He's enjoying his football at the moment and we're enjoying what he's producing. "He's like the rest of us, he wants the real stuff to start now. "What happened, happened. There is nothing untoward, it's over now. We move on and focus on the business of winning games for Stoke."

Steve Parish: Crystal Palace will go for bigger names in the future

CRYSTAL Palace will be making enquiries for the "bigger name" players in the future as long as they stay in the Premier League, says co-chairman Steve Parish. At the time the Advertiser went to press on Thursday morning, the likes of Martin Kelly, Jack Cork and Steven Nzonzi were linked with moves to the Eagles, while Parish was confident the club will bring in further additions before the end of the transfer window. "There are too many clubs chasing too few players of known quality, when you know they can do a job for you at a certain level," said the co-chairman. "We're confident we'll be more or less where we want to be kick-off time, maybe a little bit behind. "As we move forward, we'll be going in for the players who are more well-known, the more bigger named, that kind of thing. "It's been ten years we've been out of this league, we haven't been in it very long and it's the first time we've been here for a second season. "We need to consolidate and then we'll push on from there."For the full interview with Parish among a number of player interviews, do not miss Friday's special 12-page Palace supplement in the Advertiser ahead of the new season.

CRYSTAL Palace are hoping to complete a deal for Liverpool defender Martin Kelly some time today. The Advertiser understands that as of this morning, the deal didn't look like it was happening as anticipated. However, it is believed the 24-year-old could now finalise terms with the Eagles later in the day. If not, Palace will look to announce Kelly's signature on Friday. The 24-year-old will create further competition in defence at Selhurst Park, while Palace have been on the lookout for a left-back following the releases of Jonathan Parr and Dean Moxey earlier this summer. Palace are also pushing to seal a deal for Southampton midfielder Jack Cork in time for Saturday's opener at Arsenal.

Tony Pulis to leave Crystal Palace odds slashed further

It is not what Crystal Palace fans want to hear just 48 hours before the new season but according to a number of bookmakers, Tony Pulis' odds to leave the Eagles have been slashed. Last night, the Eagles boss was priced 40/1 to be the next (first) manager to leave his post this season. But, after sustained interest overnight into the early hours of Thursday morning, his odds have dropped dramatically to 7/2 and 6/1. It is believed the betting has come from south-coast punters, which is where Pulis is based. However, just after 2pm on Thursday, Pulis' odds to leave dropped further to as low as 3/1.

Tony Pulis' Crystal Palace departure rumours intensify

Tony Pulis' future at Crystal Palace is in serious doubt, according to numerous sources in the media tonight. Since last night, bookmakers have slashed their odds of Pulis being the first manager to leave his post from 40/1 to as little as 3/1 this afternoon. Rumours are rife that the boss has fallen out with co-chairman Steve Parish over a lack of transfer funds or new players coming in this summer. So far, Palace have signed Fraizer Campbell, Brede Hangeland and Martin Kelly, while they are looking to bring in Southampton midfielder Jack Cork before Saturday - although the chances are currently slim. Pulis' pre-Arsenal press conference is set for 11am tomorrow at the club's training ground and it's fair to say it will certainly be an interesting one.

EXCLUSIVE: Crystal Palace boss Tony Pulis and chairman Steve Parish in disagreement over Wilfried Zaha signing

$

A RIFT between Crystal Palace boss Tony Pulis and the club's owner Steve Parish stems from a disagreement over the return of Wilfried Zaha, the Advertiser understands. The Palace manager is said to have reservations about bringing the Man Utd winger back to Selhurst Park as he harbours doubts over his attitude – even though Parish has openly said in the past he'd like to see Zaha in Palace colours once again. The bookies odds on Pulis leaving the Eagles were slashed overnight and Palace chairman Parish earlier today refused to confirm whether the Welshman will be in charge for Saturday's season opener against Arsenal, when pressed by the London Evening Standard. The Advertiser also understands Pulis is frustrated that his chairman is putting too much attention on a move for Zaha, rather than sealing a £3million deal for Southampton midfielder Jack Cork. Cork is seen as a key signing by Pulis and although the deal is still very much on, he would like it completed as soon as possible. Speculation is rife this afternoon over Pulis' future and it is understood the big money laid on him leaving comes from the south coast where the former Stoke manager is based. Despite the supposed turmoil, Liverpool full-back Martin Kelly appeared to confirm his move to Palace on Twitter this afternoon.

Crystal Palace in crisis as Tony Pulis holds emergency talks

With less than 48 hours before they kick off the new Premier League season, Crystal Palace could be without manager Tony Pulis. The 56-year-old is currently locked in emergency talks with the club's co-chairman Steve Parish. It is believed that Pulis is unhappy with the lack of funds given to him to sign players with higher valuations this summer. So far, Palace have brought in Fraizer Campbell, Brede Hangeland and Martin Kelly without really breaking the bank. It has been suggested that Pulis and Parish have disagreed over bringing back Wilfried Zaha to Selhurst Park. Palace are looking to kick on this season after an impressive finish in the last campaign - and losing Pulis would be a huge blow. Bookmakers' odds had dropped dramatically since the early hours of Thursday morning, from 40/1 to 3/1 as of 3pm. He is now odds on favourite to be the first to leave his post in the Premier League.

TONY Pulis has tonight left Crystal Palace. The 56-year-old and co-chairman Steve Parish had been locked in crisis talks - and according to some sources, Pulis was relieved of his duties just before 7pm. The news comes as a huge blow to the Eagles, less than 48 hours before the start of the new season. It is thought that Pulis and Parish clashed over over the club's transfer policy. Palace have so far signed Fraizer Campbell, Brede Hangeland and Martin Kelly. Assistant manager Keith Millen is expected to be in charge for the game at Arsenal.

Malky Mackay, Neil Lennon and David Moyes are the three early names in the frame to replace Tony Pulis as new Crystal Palace manager. All three are currently out of work. Mackay was sacked by Cardiff City at Christmas, while Moyes was fired by Manchester United at the start of this summer following a disastrous spell at Old Trafford. Lennon, the most successful of the three in terms of trophies, left Celtic in the summer. Pulis has left Palace by mutual consent this evening.

Crystal Palace legend stunned by departure of Tony Pulis

Crystal Palace legend Geoff Thomas says he is stunned by the news of Tony Pulis leaving the club tonight (Thursday). The former Stoke City boss has reportedly left the club by mutual consent this evening after showdown talks with chairman Steve Parish, with the 56-year-old understood to have clashed with the board over the club's transfer policy. And Eagles legend Thomas has written on Twitter: "Well I'm stunned by the news of TP going. No point second guessing why but nobody benefits from this at all !!! #cpfc Several fans have described Pulis as the best manager that the club has had in years, while another former Eagle, Clinton Morrison, has tweeted his disbelief at the news. He tweeted: "Hope the news that Tony Pulis has left is a joke he has done a great job hopefully something can get sorted out." But the exit of a man who took Palace from relegation favourites to an 11th placed finish last season has seen fans' optimism ahead of the new season now replaced by trepidation ahead of the trip to Arsenal on Saturday. And the odds on Palace being relegated have been shortened by bookmakers in the wake of Pulis' departure, with the Eagles now third favourites with the bookmakers for the drop.
