Purley-based football team donates kits to kids in Africa

A CHILDREN'S football team based in Purley has helped to spread a little happiness to underprivileged youngsters in Ghana.

Shelton Athletic, who play their matches at Riddlesdown School, donated football kits to children at The Noyaa Association School, based in Jamestown, one of the most deprived areas of Ghana's capital, Accra.

The school was founded in 2012, as a project to lift the next generation of children out of poverty and give them a chance at a better future through education and sport.

Having heard about this project, William Tambling, chairman of Shelton Athletic, decided he wanted to give the children, and teachers, something to smile about - so on a recent business trip to the area, he stopped at the school armed with dozens of children's Shelton Athletic football kits.

William said: "There were many happy faces as the kids rushed to show their parents and friends.

"In Jamestown, a small gesture can make a huge difference."

London Bridge closure set to hit Croydon commuters hard at the end of August

CROYDON commuters travelling to or through London Bridge are being warned to expect severe delays and disruption at the end of August.

Between August 23 and 31, there will be no direct trains from Brighton, Gatwick Airport, Three Bridges and East Croydon to the London station, as work continues on its multi-million pound rebuild.

Network Rail has warned that during the period, which takes in four working days and a Bank Holiday weekend, East Croydon Station will be busier than usual.

The London Overground is also expected to be busy, as passengers seek alternative means of getting to the capital - though services will not be able to operate to and from New Cross from August 26-29. These services will be diverted to Crystal Palace to double the number of London Overground trains serving stations between Sydenham and Brockley, which will temporarily not be served by Southern. A replacement bus service will also run every 15 minutes between New Cross and Canada Water.

Stephen Norris, East Croydon station manager, said his team were "ready" for the influx of extra passengers and would be using the same forward planning tactics adopted during the Olympic Games.

Nicky Hughes, from Network Rail, said: "We are doing as much of the construction work as we can behind the scenes, but there will be times, such as this August, when we have to temporarily divert services around the track we're replacing.

"There are alternative routes for everyone affected and we urge passengers across London and south east to visit our new website, check if you are affected and then find out your alternative routes so you know your travel options."

Passengers are also being warned to expect more delays in December and then at various points up to January 2018, as the London Bridge work continues.

The August work at London Bridge - the latest phase of a wholesale redevelopment of the station - will include a vast amount of track and signalling work, to bring the currently closed platforms 12 and 13 back into use. Platforms 10 and 11 will be closed for demolition and rebuilding.

Arsenal forward rejects loan move to Crystal Palace

ARSENAL forward Serge Gnabry is understood to have rejected a move to Crystal Palace on Tuesday. The 19-year-old made 14 appearances for the north London outfit last season, scoring one goal and winning a penalty against Palace in Arsenal's 2-0 win at Selhurst Park. Gnabry signed a five-year contract with Arsenal in October 2013 but with the Gunners signing Alexis Sanchez and wingers Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain coming back to fitness, he could be tempted with a move elsewhere. The Germany youth international has been linked with Southampton, Newcastle, Sunderland and even Borussia Dortmund this summer. Tony Pulis had reportedly taken an interest in the attacking midfielder as the boss looks to bolster his squad with signing at least three more players, including a centre-back before the season starts. Palace have also been linked with Steven Nzonzi of Stoke City after he has reportedly handed in a transfer request in May for the second consecutive season. The 25-year-old played under Pulis in his time at the club and has remained a key figure for the Potters, making 40 appearances last season as they finished two places above the Eagles in ninth. Reports are also circulating that Palace and Swansea are interested in Southampton midfielder Jack Cork. Cork could become the latest player to depart Southampton in what is turning out to be a miserable summer for Saints fans.

Crystal Palace fans have been calling for it more than ever this summer - and it seems they could be granted their wish. Co-chairman Steve Parish has confirmed the club have come up with rough ideas of erecting a new giant screen at the Whitehorse Lane end to replace the current one, which is dated and weary-looking. Palace have been very busy tidying up their stadium over the summer, with new seats going in, alongside a new pitch, undersoil heating and perimeter surfacing and drainage. Parish confirmed the big screen plans on Twitter to a fan, while he posted an artists' impression on Instagram too.

Pre-season: Croydon 1-2 Epsom and Ewell

Pre-season friendly Croydon FC 1 Epsom and Ewell FC 2 This was the first home friendly for Croydon, and both sides were unbeaten in their pre-season friendlies going into the game. The first goal of the season was Epsom's in the fifth minute, but it was disallowed as the referee had thought the ball was going out for a goal kick rather than in the back of the net. Croydon opened the scoring on the half-hour mark when Dan Jupe reacted quickest to convert a rebound from Badar Mohammed's shot. Then, following a foul, Justin Hemmings' powerful free kick was saved by the goalkeeper and was the best chance Croydon had of doubling their lead. Nine minutes into the second half, the Epsom number 11 went past the Croydon defence to equalise. Croydon managed to get a bit more possession by now and even tried to get forward, but a chance to score was stopped by an Epsom defender. Midway through the half, Epsom had a great chance to go in front but missed the target, but moments later the visitors made no mistake with the winner. The next Croydon FC game is at Croydon Sports Arena on Saturday against Clapton FC, kicking off at 3pm, followed by a race night starting at 6.30pm. The new season starts next weekend against Deal Town before they play Erith Town on Tuesday, August 12. Croydon's pre-season campaign so far: Banstead Athletic – Won 3-2, Wembley FC – Drew 2-2, Farleigh Rovers – Won 3-1, Raynes Park Vale – Won 1-0.

Police hunting mystery man who tried to collect child from Thornton Heath school

Police in Croydon are attempting to trace a man who tried to collect a child from a junior school in Thornton Heath, but left before anyone could find out who he was. The incident happened at 12:20pm on Monday (July 21) at Beulah Junior School, in Beulah Road. The man arrived at school and told staff he was there to collect a child, giving the name of the child in the process. Teachers spoke to the child, who did not recognise the man, but the man then left before staff could find out who he was. The school called the police, and enquiries are ongoing to try and find out his identity, as it is thought the child's family do not know who he is. An image of the man has been released. Detective Constable Stephen Hall, the investigating officer, said: "This is an unusual incident, as it appears the man knew the child's name, but his family are currently unaware who he was. "We're extremely keen to establish his identity so that we can get to the bottom of why he was there. "I would ask anyone who thinks they may recognise this person to get in touch with us." Anyone with information should contact Croydon CID on 101 and quoting reference 154568. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Gatwick chief says Croydon would benefit from second runway

CROYDON could be among the places to benefit if Gatwick gets a second runway, according to the airport's boss.

Gatwick chief executive Stewart Wingate said this week that Croydon Council was among those keen for Gatwick to get the nod over Heathrow, to help bring prosperity, jobs and growth to the town.

Mr Wingate said: "I know there are certain local authorities that are very keen to have the additional housing and benefits a second runway at Gatwick would bring.

"There are certain local authorities in a commutable distance that want the jobs the airport will bring. I know Croydon want them, for example."

Mr Wingate was speaking in the week Gatwick unveiled a £200 million fund to support its application for a second runway.

The proposal to build an additional runway is currently being considered by the Government's Airport Commission, alongside a plan for a third runway at Heathrow.

Mr Wingate, who also met Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell last week to discuss the possible benefits for this area, said: "A second runway here means that we have two world-class airports rather than all our eggs in one basket with Heathrow."

Mr Barwell said on Twitter last Friday: "Really good meeting with Gatwick Airport this evening, hearing about their plans for a second runway & how this would benefit Croydon."

This follows a call from Croydon's London Assembly member Steve O' Connell, who last week said a second runway at Gatwick would be "the perfect catalyst" for new homes, business and jobs in the borough.

Former Crystal Palace defender linked with surprise move from Southampton to Tottenham

EX-CRYSTAL Palace defender Jose Fonte has emerged as a shock target for Champions League chasing Tottenham.

The 30-year-old Portuguese centre half has been heavily linked with a move away from St Mary's this summer, with Cardiff reportedly leading the chase for his services.

But now Fonte has been linked by at least two football writers with a surprise move to White Hart Lane, where he would link up once again with former boss Maurico Pochettino - even if the prospect of the journeyman stopper moving up the Premier League table seems a little far-fetched.

Fonte spent four seasons with Palace in the second tier of English football, before moving south in 2010.

We take a look at Tony Pulis' Crystal Palace transfer dealings

0
0
Tony Pulis has been at the Crystal Palace helm for almost ten months now and in that time he's spent a considerable number of hours crafting his magic in the transfer market, writes Dan Gibbs. In January it felt like Palace fans had their own private deadline day with the club announcing an impressive five deadline day signings, making them the busiest domestic club on 31stJanuary, along with Fulham and QPR. So far the summer hasn't been as exciting for Palace fans but don't panic yet as there's still plenty of time. Let's take a look at how these signings have settled into their first season at SE25. Tom Ince A target that had long been on the club's agenda, along with several others, finally put pen to paper and signed on a season's long loan to the delight of Palace fans. The winger boosted Palace's attacking threat going forward but his place wasn't cemented within the starting 11, with the likes of Yannick Bolasie and Jason Puncheon of similar ability preferred. Ince scored on his debut in the 3-1 win over West Brom but failed to add any more too his tally, making just seven more appearances. The youngster will now play against Palace next season for Steve Bruce's Hull City side. Joe Ledley Signing a player of Joe Ledley's ability, a Welsh International, and two-time SPL winner for Celtic, is something Palace would have only dreamt about a couple of seasons back. The 27-year-old who enjoyed six successful years at Cardiff may not have been too well known to some fans but he will be now. Another scorer on his debut against West Brom, people may have been confused to why he was playing left-back when on paper he is a centre midfielder, but nevertheless he put in a faultless performance. Ledley, found himself playing as a regular throughout the season alongside captain Mile Jedinak in a partnership that has been working well with Kagisho Dikgacoi becoming the victim of the newcomer. His defensive abilities and man-marking has impressed most, but there have been sparks of what he can do going forward. An exciting player, who will only get better with time at the club. Scott Dann The third debutant in the West Brom match was 6ft 5in centre-back Scott Dann, signed from Blackburn Rovers on a three-and-a-half year deal. Danny Gabbidon was unlucky to lose his place to the new signing, having not done much wrong at the start of the season and his partnership with Damien Delaney working well. Perhaps, Pulis was looking for a change of partnership and it has paid off with a string of clean sheets. Jason Puncheon Signed at the start of the season on a season-long loan from Southampton, Puncheon signed a four-and-a-half year deal on deadline day back in January. Mixed opinions still divide the Palace faithful on him, with some being impressed by his gift of technical ball skills at his feet and his eye for goal which saw him score seven goals in the league. Whilst others, see him as a poor replacement for Wilfried Zaha, which is unfair on the player and see that he gives the ball away too often. Puncheon didn't do himself any favours with his critics after that woeful penalty at Spurs either. The ability is there with Puncheon, he just lacks consistency. Wayne Hennessey Having spent eight seasons with Wolves and notching up a string of impressive performances for his national side, the Welshman attracted the attention of Tony Pulis, signing a three-and-half year deal for a reported £3m in January. The 27-year-old made just one appearance for Palace last season but has featured in preseason. Hennessey is a signing that has been made to boost the goalkeeping options available and his time will come in a year or two. There's just one problem. He's competing for a place with Palace legend Julian Speroni. His time will come, though. Fraizer Campbell The highly rated goalscorer is Palace's only summer signing so far (along with Chamakh's contract extension) but one that will be a welcomed addition to our squad. Campbell notched up nine goals for Cardiff last season and will hope to improve upon that record this season. He should get plenty of opportunities with balls into the box from our wingers and a partnership with Chamakh or Glenn Murray could blossom nicely. And there we have it; the January signings that played a huge part in keeping Palace up last year and the new signing that could make a big contribution this season. Whatever happens this year, so long as Pulis's signing's remain injury free and get match time, they'll all have very successful careers at Crystal Palace Football Club.

Boris Johnson launches scheme to tag persistent drunken offenders

0
0
BORIS Johnson visited Croydon Magistrates' Court today to unveil a new scheme to tag drunken offenders with ankle bracelets which can tell if they've been drinking. From today, justices in South London can order offenders to remain sober and wear the "tag" which measures the alcohol in their sweat. He was joined by Croydon and Sutton London Assembly member Steve O'Connell who himself donned the device over two days for a test run. Mr Johnson joked that Mr O'Connell's results showed "basically, almost continuous alcohol consumption". But he said the tags had been successful in tackling alcohol-related crime in America. "The argument is when you get people who are convicted of alcohol related offence, a Saturday night fight or whatever, where a custodial sentence is clearly not appropriate, what you want to do is to stop them drinking." The first order forcing an offender to wear the tag was passed at Croydon Magistrates' this morning. Mr O'Connell said the tag had been "barely noticeable" during the day, but had proved a bit more of a nuisance at night as it buzzes every 30 minutes to check alcohol levels. "It was a good test really, I said I'd do it because I knew I was going out for a drink with friends. I had three pints and it showed up on the graph. He added:"The pilot lends itself to Croydon because town centres throughout the borough may well have alcohol related problems. "I hope it will prove successful and it can only be a good thing for Croydon and Sutton if it drives down alcohol-related violence." Around 150 offenders are expected to be forced to wear the tag for up to 120 days as part of the trial, which is taking place in Croydon, Lambeth Southwark and Sutton. If an offender breaches the sobriety order, they will be brought back before a judge or magistrate who can consider further punishments. Alcohol related crime is estimated to cost the UK between £8bn and £13bn every year. According to Public Health England, alcohol-related crime is significantly higher in London than all other English regions.

Pair arrested in police raids in connection with illegal East Croydon rave where schoolboy died

Two men have been arrested in police raids this morning in connection with the illegal rave in East Croydon in June where a schoolboy died. Addresses in Poplar, East London and West Horsley, Surrey were targeted by officers as part of an investigation into the illegal gathering at the disused Royal Mail sorting office in Croydon on June 15 where Rio Andrew died. Fifteen-year-old Rio, from Notting Hill died after collapsing during the evening after reportedly drinking from a bottle of beer laced with ketamine. Two men in their 20s were arrested for drugs and licensing offences, and both were taken into custody at a south London police station. Detective Chief Inspector Sian Thomas, from Croydon CID, said: "There are a number of ongoing investigations into the events linked to the illegal rave in East Croydon and we will continue to pursue those involved in any aspect of criminal activity that took place that night. "Immediately after the event, we made it clear that we were determined to pursue those who were involved in organising the illegal event, and we remain committed to bringing those people to justice." Police have now arrested 25 people in connection with the rave, nine of whom were arrested during the event. The investigation is split into three strands – the event's organisation, the violence that took place on the night and the circumstances that surrounded the death of Mr Andrew.

Little girl's snake turns up in a South Croydon garden - 18 MONTHS after it went missing

WHEN seven-year-old Mia Chambers' pet corn snake escaped just days before she was going to bring it to school for 'show and tell' she was devastated.

But after 18 MONTHS on the loose, her slippery friend Corny turned up across the road in her neighbour's garden.

Mia and her mum Anita John, from Normanston Road, South Croydon, had given up all hope of finding Corny. But Anita was amazed when a friend contacted her to say she'd seen someone post that they'd found a snake on Facebook – and the person who found it lived just across the road.

"Mia was so devastated when it went missing," said Anita. "She even wrote a letter saying 'please come home Corny'. She was only little at the time.

"When we went round to see, it had the same red and black colours; we knew it was Corny as soon as Mia saw it."

Anita was amazed the little corn snake had survived the cold winter, especially as they're native to the warm south east of the USA, but Corny had learnt to cope with Croydon's harsh outdoors.

"It must have hibernated through the winter, but it was digesting a little mouse it had managed to catch," said Anita.

Mia became interested in snakes after a friend had one as a pet, and after various visits to zoos and pet shops, she kept pestering her mum for her own.

Anita said: "She saw the little baby ones and kept asking for one, but I said 'no way'. But in the end, I gave in. When she got it she used to hold it all the time.

"She wasn't afraid at all. She was so happy to have Corny back."

But Corny's return has come at a cost.

"I've only just sold the tank on eBay for £10," Anita explained.

"It cost me about ten times that!"

CRYSTAL Palace Academy boss Gary Issott has hinted there could be some first team squad members involved with his Development Squad at Forest Green Rovers on Saturday. After returning from their tour of the USA, Tony Pulis' squad are set to play Brentford and give as many of the players a run-out in west London. However, with the likes of Fraizer Campbell and Stephen Dobbie stepping out for the U21s at Dulwich Hamlet on Tuesday, the Eagles management are set to make a decision of who will be where come 3pm on Saturday. "I think there could be a situation where we field two strong teams at both Brentford and Forest Green," Issott told the Advertiser. "That could change on Friday (today) but at the moment that could happen. "After that, the first team only have the game in Germany, so you never know."
