Teen tells court of lead up to fatal Sea Cadets blaze

A TEENAGE witness has told of the events leading up to a blaze during which a man died in a derelict building. The schoolgirl's account of the events at the former Sea Cadets building in Davenant Road last June 10, as told to police in a taped interview, was played to jurors at Croydon Crown Court yesterday. Two teenagers are standing trial on arson and manslaughter charges following the blaze and discovery of Sylwester Mendzelewski's body. The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said she and both defendants as well as one other friend were at the building that day. She said she and others regularly went to the derelict building, which they referred to as a "haunted house" due to a rumor that someone had died there, just for something to do. The 14-year-old said her three friends entered the fire-damaged building via a door but she waited outside, so as not to ruin her uniform. About ten minutes later, her friends emerged, she said, and there was smoke inside the building. Jurors heard her tell police: "One of them mentioned there was a fire in there and then [a friend who cannot be named] said yes, but it is going to go out. "That is all they said." She added the group had left the building and eventually gone to evening youth club, only finding out later on the news that someone had died. She said the news made her "worried" about what would happen to her and her friends. The teenager said she had also visited the building the evening before, Sunday evening, with other people, but had no recollection of a fire there on that occasion. Last Friday, the jury heard from fire investigator Mark Ross who said firefighters had been called to the building the evening before due to rubbish alight in the back of the building. Mr Ross said the local station watch manager had deemed the fire deliberate and raised concerns that somebody might come back and set fire to tires in the building. Asked whether he knew firefighters had also met people living in the dilapidated building, he said he had not. Mr Ross said he thought the fire had started at the tires and its cause was "the deliberate application of a naked flame." He added Mr Menzelewski had definitely collapsed after the blaze had started, because he collapsed on top of soot.

Croydon train services dogged by delays by dog on track

TRAIN services in Croydon were dogged by delays when a dog owner ran on to the line to catch his pet pooch. The dog jumped onto the tracks at Norwood Junction station at around 8.30pm on Monday. It had been with three young men who were waiting on the platform, a least one of whom is understood to have followed the dog on to the track to look for him. Three services were delayed while staff from Network Rail tried to retrieve the animal. Other trains travelling through the station were slowed down while the search continued without success. A passenger on a train held at the station told the Advertiser: "My commute home is often dogged by delays – but this was the first time it was delayed by a dog. "It wasn't clear from the driver's announcement, but it sounded like one of the dog's owners might have tried to get under the train to get it out. "I often take my own dogs on train journeys and this was a real reminder about how important it is to keep pets under control on the platform." A spokesman for Network Rail said: "We were called to reports of three people trying to retrieve a dog that had gone onto the railway. "There were delays to services as a result. We understand that some of these young people might have gone on the track to look for the dog. "Our staff tried to locate the dog but it was never found." Normal service resumed through the station at 9.30pm. A spokesman added: "If your dog does go on the track, our staff will do their best to help. Please do not follow it."

JEWELLED shoes, an origami skirt and giant paper flowers helped form a stunning exhibition at Coulsdon Sixth Form college last week. The creations were all made by the college's visual arts students as part of their course. Head of visual arts Fiona Brennan praised the "incredibly talented bunch of students" and their hard work. Art and design student Emily Wood, 19, from Shirley, described the college as her "second home", adding: "I have loved every minute of it. Art is where my heart is and it's changed my view of life completely." BTEC Extended Diploma student Adam Spear said he had discovered his "passion" for photography while in his second year at the college. He added: "I have really started to develop my own style. I didn't think I'd be in this position of knowing what I want to do, so for that, I'm grateful for the College Visual Arts team for all the opportunities that I have been given."

A SCHOOL has paid tribute to a 15-year-old boy who died after attending an illegal rave in Croydon. Rio Andrew, from west London, died in hospital yesterday after drinking from a bottle of beer containing ketamine during Saturday night's event, the Advertiser understands. He was an accomplished athlete, especially in the shot put, and was selected by the Jamaican national team during the Lonodon 2012 Olympics to be part of their guard of honour. Holland Park School, in Kensington, described Rio as an "exceptional athlete" who was about to receive an award in recognition of his talent. A statement on its website, published today (Tuesday), said: "The school wishes to acknowledge the tragic death of Rio Andrew, a Year 10 student who joined the school some eight months ago, following his attendance at the much reported event of Saturday evening at a disused post office in Croydon. "Students and staff at the school deeply regret this sad loss of a much respected student. "Rio was an able scholar, destined for academic success. "He was also an exceptional sportsman and due to be awarded this Friday, a prestigious sports award. "The school wishes to send its collective sympathies and respect to all of Rio's family and friends. "He will be greatly missed by the school community." A 19-year-old, who is understood to have drank from the same bottle, remains in a stable condition in hospital.

Developers begin demolition work around mechanic Richard Hough's South Norwood garage despite Croydon Council telling them to stop

DEVELOPERS are demolishing the buildings around a working South Norwood garage despite Croydon Council telling them to stop. Mechanic Richard Hough said contractors working for developers Greathall had turned up at his Autoclutch car repair garage this morning and started taking sledgehammers and jackhammers to the buildings around which his business lies. Mr Hough has been engaged in a 12-year battle with Greathall to stay at the premises but was told in court last month he must vacate the site by the end of August – a decision he is taking to the Court of Appeal. Greathall's planning permission to build on the site – which it says it intends to build flats on – runs out this Sunday. Mr Hough said Greathall were in breach of planning rules and regulations. A video posted on Facebook by a friend of Mr Hough shows men from Access Building Contractors taking sledgehammers to the garage. Access' owner Xhevat Lita is also on site to watch the work take place. Mr Hough said enforcement officers and members of Croydon Council's building control department had been down to the Station Road buildings to tell Access to stop, although the contractors have continued and "almost taken the front of the building down". He said their actions were a "disgrace". Greathall has been trying to make Mr Hough leave the site since 2002 so it can build flats on the land opposite Norwood Junction. A council spokesman said: "Council planning officers are monitoring activity on the site and are in regular conversations with the developer. "At present the work is being done without full planning consent, however we have had assurances the outstanding conditions on the application will be dealt with very soon. "We are keen to see the matter resolved without the need for taking legal enforcement action, but this is a complicated case involving protection of the character of a valuable conservation area and we are considering our options." Mr Hough has worked at the garage for more than 40 years and run it since 1990.

Council leader warns illegal raves 'not welcome' in Croydon

COUNCIL leader Tony Newman has told organisers of Saturday's illegal rave they are "not welcome" in Croydon. Thousands of people attended the event at the former Royal Mail delivery office by East Station. Crowds clashed with police and eight people were taken to hospital, including a 15-year-old who died yesterday after drinking a beer police believe contained the party drug ketamine. Cllr Newman said he wanted to send a clear message to those involved in running the event. He said: "Our thoughts go out to the boy's family over their devastating loss, and we will be doing our utmost to help the police bring those responsible to justice. "The message to the organisers of this rave is very clear; you are not welcome in this borough and you will not be allowed to get away with organising illegal activities that put young people at such terrible risk." The rave was organised by Valhalla and Rum and Bass, both of which have in the past hired security guards or stewards to manage their events. Revellers registered interest in attending via social media and then received an email on the night containing phone numbers to call for the location. Cllr Newman said efforts were being made to trace those responsible. He explained: "We are assisting the police, who are using the council's CCTV footage to track perpetrators, and we expect the strongest possible action will be taken against all those who were involved. "Owners of empty buildings have a responsibility to ensure they are safe and secure, and we will be making sure that they take these responsibilities seriously. We must do everything in our power to make sure that this does not happen here ever again." Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell has also spoken out against those involved, saying they should "feel the full force of the law".

Croydon footballer Michael Boateng found guilty of conspiring to match-fix

A FOOTBALLER from Croydon has been found guilty of conspiring to fix matches. Michael Boateng, 22, of Davidson Road, was convicted of conspiracy to commit bribery today at Birmingham Crown Court. He was found guilty, along with Singaporean businessmen Chann Sankaran, 33, and Krishna Sanjey Ganeshan, 43, of attempting to fix a League 2 match between AFC Wimbledon and Dagenham and Redbridge on November 26. Jurors are still deliberating over a single charge of conspiracy to offer, promise or give a financial advantage in relation to former Crystal Palace youth player Moses Swaibu, 25, a former Archbishop Lanfranc pupil. Hakeem Adelakun, another former Palace youth player, of Thornton Heath, was cleared of the same charges and had told the jury he knew nothing about any plot to fix matches. Boateng and Mr Swaibu last played for Brighton-based Whitehawk FC. The court heard how Sankaran and Ganeshan were "central" to the scam but that Boateng was a "willing recruit".

James Dasaolu left out of Team England's Commonwealth Games squad

CROYDON sprinter James Dasaolu has been left out of Team England's 2014 Commonwealth Games squad. In the announcement made yesterday, the 26-year-old has been overlooked, even though he has made a recovery from a recent hamstring injury. Team England have decided to take the trio of Adam Gemili, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and Richard Kilty to Glasgow. Dasaolu has also been overlooked for the 4x100m relay team as well, even though he has clocked a time of 9.91 seconds. Team leader Peter Stanley said: "James was certainly discussed, our selection process and criteria, we were looking at athletes with current form, running from January 1, 2014, up until June 2. "James hadn't competed unfortunately, during that period, over 100 metres. "So it didn't really leave us much room to nominate him, and he still hasn't competed yet, so it's the only decision we could have made. "He is coming back from injury; I understand he is in good form, but now he'll have more time to complete his training programme with his coach to be ready for the Europeans. "The Commonwealths are probably just a little bit too early for him I think. "This way he'll have (the) chance to compete, get some competitions under his belt, test himself and come to a peak at the correct time for him."

POLICE have appealed for information following the death of 15-year-old Rio Andrew. The schoolboy, from Notting Hill, died after being taken ill during the illegal rave at the former Royal Mail delivery office in East Croydon on Saturday. It is believed he drank from a bottle of beer that contained the party drug ketamine, the Advertiser understands. An emergency meeting was held between senior council and police officers yesterday to discuss the situation. A 19-year-old, who is understood to have drank from the same bottle, is in a stable condition in hospital. According to police, Rio had gone to the rave with a group of his friends. He collapsed and was taken to hospital where he died yesterday (Monday). Croydon Police want to speak to anyone who may have been with Rio or who saw him that night. Detective Chief Inspector Steve Baxter, heading the investigation, said: "Rio went out for the night with his friends. His parents had every right to expect that he would return home safe and well. "Sadly, he didn't and my thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time. "There has been speculation that his death was caused by drugs, at this stage no one can say that with certainty as we are still waiting for the results of the post mortem. "I want to speak to anyone who saw Rio during Saturday night, as he travelled from his home in Notting Hill to Croydon, to help us build up a picture of his night out. "If someone did sell or give Rio drugs then I want information to help us catch whoever that was. "If you know anything or saw anything that night please get in touch and help with our investigation."Anyone with any information is asked to contact Croydon CID on 020 3276 2264.

Spring Lane and Tennison Road bridge closures to cause havoc for South Norwood until end of July

0

SOUTH Norwood is to endure further traffic woe after another bridge was closed this week and the reopening of another delayed by a month. Tennison Road bridge closed yesterday until spring 2015 but this blow to road users has been compounded by the news Spring Lane bridge will remain closed until at least Monday, July 28. Both bridges are being replaced but the Spring Lane delay has been caused by a "need to redesign the bridge foundations". The Tennison Road bridge is the third in the local area to close for a considerable period of time after the Penge Road bridge works last summer. Local business owner Richard Hough said at the time: "You might as well close South Norwood while this is happening." Motorists have been infuriated by the extensive works to the bridges which are being undertaken by Croydon Council in partnership with Transport for London and Network Rail. But Kathy Bee, councillor for South Norwood and cabinet member for transport and environment, said: "Unfortunately, unexpected circumstances mean they're taking longer than planned. "The council is doing all it can to mitigate the effects, including the banning of all non-urgent roadworks in the area, arranging amendments to traffic light timings, and encouraging the use of alternative routes. "While the delay means there will be an overlap of these works with the closure of Tennison Road bridge, the long-term benefits to local people and all who use both these bridges outweigh the unavoidable inconvenience they experience while the replacement work is carried out." Tennison Road bridge dates back to 1920 and will be replaced with a structure expected to last at least 120 years. Cllr Bee said where practicable 24-hour work would be going ahead to get the work completed quickly. She added: "This has been something of a learning curve for all concerned and the lessons will be taken on board, particularly those concerning the sequencing of construction programming, and the certification of design elements."

POLICE have released images of seven men they want to talk to in connection with disorder at the illegal rave in East Croydon. Thousands of people attended the event at the former Royal Mail delivery office, in Cherry Orchard Road, on Saturday night. When police initially tried to shut the event down officers were pelted with missiles by the crowd, including furniture and fire extinguishers hurled from the building. Police believe the seven men may hold "key information about the disorder that happened during and after the rave", a Met spokesman said. They do not think any of them were involved in the death of Rio Andrew, 15. The schoolboy fell ill after drinking from a bottle of beer containing the party drug ketamine, the Advertiser understands, and died in hospital on Monday. Commander Simon Letchford said: "The behaviour of some of those attending this illegal rave and the direct attacks on officers who were there to maintain public safety is completely unacceptable. "We will identify all those responsible and bring them to justice." So far 14 people have been arrested in connection with the event. Two men have been charged with violent disorder and drugs offences. Two others were given cautions for possession of Class A drugs.Anyone with information about the seven men in the pictures is asked to call the Public Order Investigations Team on 020 8246 0076 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

CRYSTAL Palace will kick off their second successive season in the Premier League with back-to-back London derbies against Arsenal and West Ham. The Eagles open with a trip to the Emirates on August 16 and host the Hammers a week later at Selhurst Park. Promoted Burnley and Leicester both visit Selhurst Park in September although Tony Pulis' side don't face Harry Redknapp's Queens Park Rangers until after Christmas on December 28. But there looks to be another tricky run at the end of the season with Chelsea away, Manchester United at home, Liverpool away and Swansea at home making up the final four games. Palace fans will be happy after last year's trip to Villa Park that Ronald Koeman's Southampton will have to travel up to Selhurst Park on Boxing Day although Villa away beckons on New Year's Day.Here is the full fixture list: 16/08/2014 15:00 Arsenal v Crystal Palace 23/08/2014 15:00 Crystal Palace v West Ham United 30/08/2014 15:00 Newcastle United v Crystal Palace 13/09/2014 15:00 Crystal Palace v Burnley 20/09/2014 15:00 Everton v Crystal Palace 27/09/2014 15:00 Crystal Palace v Leicester City 04/10/2014 15:00 Hull City v Crystal Palace 18/10/2014 15:00 Crystal Palace v Chelsea 25/10/2014 15:00 West Bromwich Albion v Crystal Palace 01/11/2014 15:00 Crystal Palace v Sunderland 08/11/2014 15:00 Manchester United v Crystal Palace 22/11/2014 15:00 Crystal Palace v Liverpool 29/11/2014 15:00 Swansea City v Crystal Palace 02/12/2014 20:00 Crystal Palace v Aston Villa 06/12/2014 15:00 Tottenham Hotspur v Crystal Palace 13/12/2014 15:00 Crystal Palace v Stoke City 20/12/2014 15:00 Manchester City v Crystal Palace 26/12/2014 15:00 Crystal Palace v Southampton 28/12/2014 15:00 Queens Park Rangers v Crystal Palace 01/01/2015 15:00 Aston Villa v Crystal Palace 10/01/2015 15:00 Crystal Palace v Tottenham Hotspur 17/01/2015 15:00 Burnley v Crystal Palace 31/01/2015 15:00 Crystal Palace v Everton 07/02/2015 15:00 Leicester City v Crystal Palace 10/02/2015 20:00 Crystal Palace v Newcastle United 21/02/2015 15:00 Crystal Palace v Arsenal 28/02/2015 15:00 West Ham United v Crystal Palace 03/03/2015 19:45 Southampton v Crystal Palace 14/03/2015 15:00 Crystal Palace v Queens Park Rangers 21/03/2015 15:00 Stoke City v Crystal Palace 04/04/2015 15:00 Crystal Palace v Manchester City 11/04/2015 15:00 Sunderland v Crystal Palace 18/04/2015 15:00 Crystal Palace v West Bromwich Albion 25/04/2015 15:00 Crystal Palace v Hull City 02/05/2015 15:00 Chelsea v Crystal Palace 09/05/2015 15:00 Crystal Palace v Manchester United 16/05/2015 15:00 Liverpool v Crystal Palace 24/05/2015 15:00 Crystal Palace v Swansea City

Crystal Palace tipped to survive again in the Premier League

0
0
CRYSTAL Palace are being tipped to survive again in the Premier League next season, according to the latest odds from the bookmakers. Having survived comfortably under Tony Pulis last season, the Eagles are now not tipped to go down this time around, with William Hill making them 9-4 to be relegated. That makes them fifth favourites in the relegation odds, with the promoted trio of Burnley, Leicester City and Queens Park Rangers all priced at shorter odds. Hull City are also priced at 2-1 for the drop, despite a successful first season back in the Premier League last season. The release of the odds comes on the day that the fixtures have been released for the new season, with Palace travelling to London rivals Arsenal on the opening day. But while Palace fans will be pleased to see their side tipped by the bookmakers to survive, it would take an optimistic Eagles supporter to back them at 500-1 for a top four finish, or 1500-1 to win the Premier League.

Browett relishing Crystal Palace's Premier League opener at Arsenal

STEVE BROWETT says he is excited about the new Premier League season, after Crystal Palace were handed an opening day fixture at Arsenal. The fixtures computer has given the Eagles a London derby on the opening day and a tough run-in, with Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool to play in three of their last four matches. But Palace co-chairman says he is relishing the prospect of facing Arsenal in their opening game of the season, adding that it could be a good time to play them. "You have to play all of these teams at some point, and it might be good to play them [Arsenal] first," he said. "Coming off the back of a World Cup, they may have a few players who have short summer holidays and you don't know what form they will be in. "At the start of the season, you do get a few surprises, like you did last season with Aston Villa winning at Arsenal and Cardiff beating Manchester City early on. "These results can happen and hopefully we can go there and get a result."

Boy, 16: 'I lost a finger at illegal East Croydon rave but carried on dancing'

A TEENAGER ended up in hospital after his little finger was ripped off during the illegal rave in East Croydon. The 16-year-old was listening to drum and bass music inside the former Royal Mail delivery office on Saturday when a fire alarm went off. He said: "Everyone was like, 'Rip it off! Rip it off!', so I thought I'd give it a go. "I was completely sober at the time. I jumped up, grabbed it and my little finger got caught in the case because it was all broken. "As I came to rip it back down, my little finger got ripped off completely. "It's the weirdest feeling: one second you're fine and your little finger is there, and the next it's gone. It shoves reality up your backside." Despite being in agonising pain, the teenager wrapped up his wound using his t-shirt and carried on dancing for another half an hour. He told Vice magazine: "I've only been here for an hour, I've paid £10 for this night, I've lost my little finger - am I seriously going to go? Nah I'm going to skank until I can't skank anymore. After that, my mate dragged me down to the paramedics. "I said to [the paramedic] is there any chance you can bandage it up and I can just rave on? "He was like, "Nah, you're going to hospital mate. "There was a chance of septicaemia because of the dirt, so he got some medical acid, poured it right onto the finger and all the flesh around it melted right in front of my eyes. That was the worst pain I've ever felt in my life." The teenager later posted a picture of his bandaged finger on the internet alongside: "I want my finger back. **** happens."

Razor sharp knives sold to boy, 14, by Norbury trader

A NORBURY trader has been fined for selling razor-sharp knives to a 14-year-old boy. Shakab Hakime, owner of Norbury Discount Store, in London Road, admitted selling a set of six craft knives to the teenager. The boy was part of a Croydon Council trading standards test-purhcasing operation in February and was not challenged about his age by Hakime. He had visited seven other shops as part of the operation, who all refused to sell him the knives – which carried a prominent warning, stating "not to be sold to anyone under 18 years of age". At Croydon Magistrates' Court yesterday (Tuesday), Hakime admitted selling a knife to a person aged under 18 and was fined £250, ordered to pay costs of £250 plus a £25 victim surcharge. He admitted at the time of the sale he had no formal record of any training relating to the sale of age-restricted products. He was sent an invitation to attend a Do You Pass? business training course and warned that test purchasing would be carried out within the next following 90 days. Councillor Mark Watson, cabinet member for safety and justice, said: "Knife crime is a matter the council takes very seriously, and the sale of knives to a young person demonstrates a disregard for the law and the safety of people in Croydon's community. "Those in the business of selling knives have a particular responsibility to be especially vigilant, and if they fail in that responsibility must be prepared to accept the consequences."

Australia captain Mile Jedinak has made his mark on this year's World Cup in Brazil. The Crystal Palace skipper converted from the penalty spot in this afternoon's crucial game with the Netherlands to give the Socceroos a 2-1 lead. Oliver Bozanic's cross from the left hand side of the box hit Daryl Janmaat on the arm and the referee controversially pointed to the spot. Jedinak converted to give his side a 2-1 lead against the Dutch and in so doing became the first Palace player in the club's history to score at the World Cup.
